The Plant Water Management Experiments: Hydroponics 3 & 4

As humans consider longer-duration missions in space, NASA has identified production of fresh vegetables aboard spacecraft as beneficial for crew nutrition, mental wellbeing, and enabling bioregenerative life support (i.e., air, water, and waste processing). Current low-g plant growth techniques have successfully grown a variety of leafy and flowering plants. However, unique microgravity fluidics challenges to maintain plant moisture levels persist which hamper overall system reliability. The Plant Water Management (PWM) experiments seek to demonstrate low-cost, low-mass, reusable plant growth systems that leverage recent advances in low-g capillary fluidics phenomena to provide routine, largely passive, water delivery to plants. This paper presents findings from a series of PWM-Hydroponics 3 & 4 experiments, which were collected during three ISS flight operations that occurred in March, May, and July of 2021. Open hydroponic capillary channel flows with synthetic evapo-transpiring plant models were used. Tests demonstrated flow stability for single and parallel channel flow configurations across a range of flow rates, plant types, and plant arrangements. Technology demonstrations of both passive aeration and bubble phase separation are reported. We provide details of the data reduction and archive. Insights from the successful flight demonstrations provide a foundation from which follow-on PWM-Hydroponics 5 & 6 experiments on ISS, potentially incorporate living plants, are being considered. Xx Summary of positives and negatives..

Drop Towers for Fun and Research

Microgravity is the apparent weightlessness that occurs during freefall – it affects objects orbiting the Earth, which is why astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) float. Due to this, experiments and technologies that are sent to the ISS needs to function properly in the microgravity environment. There are only a few ways for scientists and engineers to test in such an environment on Earth and one way is with drop tower facilities. On top of being used for research, drop towers can also be used as a tool for educational outreach. The Drop Towers for Fun and Research website was created as a natural extension of that outreach. It can be used as a tool for teaching the public about drop towers including what drop towers are, what they are used for, and why they are important for microgravity research. Additionally, there will be videos that help answer these questions and that show actual experiments from past drop tower experiments. There will also be a section that highlight Drop Tower used in amusement parks for fun. It is our hope this site will be able to educate the public on drop towers and show them drop tower that they can be used for both fun and research.

Laser-Processed Condensing Heat Exchanger for Space Applications

In sizing a condensing heat exchanger for space life support systems, there is a limit to allowable pressure drop along with a required vapor recuperation rate. This sizing is performed by using known heat transfer and pressure drop correlations in a numerical model. Dimpling the surface of an air-liquid channeled heat exchanger increases the convective heat transfer rate however creates difficulties within the numerical model as the flat plate correlations are no longer accurate. To increase the fidelity of the numerical model used for sizing the heat exchanger Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) with an SST k-ω turbulence model was performed on a periodic portion of the heat exchanger. Through CFD modeling a heat flux and pressure drop was measured across the heat exchanger channel, this information was used to create a localized Nusselt number that was incorporated into the numerical model along with a more accurate pressure drop due to the dimpled surface. Additionally, through modeling the heat exchanger after manufacturing and assembly in Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) software there was an increase in the measurement accuracy of geometric features which was incorporated into the numerical model for further increase in fidelity.
