Analysis and Grading of the Test Performance of PS Modules for the CMS Phase-II Outer Tracker Upgrade

The Outer Tracker detector of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment provides information about the trajectory of charged particles produced in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). During the High Luminosity LHC upgrade, scheduled for the late 2020s, the Outer Tracker will be replaced with new modules capable of transmitting data to the L1 Trigger. These modules are being assembled at several facilities around the world, including Fermilab, necessitating coordinated standards of module quality. Here I discuss the development of POTATO (Phase-II Outer Tracker Analyzer of Test Outputs), a C++ software which provides a standardized procedure for analyzing and grading test results of the Outer Tracker modules. The particular focus of this paper is on the analysis and grading of the PS (pixel-strip) modules in POTATO.

The CMS Phase 2 Outer Tracker Analyzer of Test Outputs - POTATO!

The Phase-2 upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), also known as the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) is designed to achieve peak instantaneous luminosities which is about an order of magnitude higher than the nominal design value of $10^{34}~cm^{-2}s^{-1}$ delivering a total of atleast $3000 fb^{-1}$ data over 10 years of operation at $\sqrt{s}~=~14~TeV$. One crucial aspect of the CMS Phase-2 detector upgrade is the replacement of the existing tracking detector in order to deal with the extreme HL-LHC conditions, retaining and further expanding the physics performances achieved in the previous years. The outer part of the upgraded tracker (OT), will be equipped with over 13,000 macro Pixel-Strip (PS) and Strip-Strip (2S) modules! Module production is distributed across centers worldwide and necessitates coordinated efforts and standardized procedures. Along with production and assembly of the modules, Fermilab OT group is also working on a tool, Phase 2 Outer Tracker Analyzer of Test Outputs (POTATO) that will analyze, grade, upload and manage the large quantity of files to be stored in the centralized Database (DB). In this contribution a brief overview of the module testing and the power and dire need of POTATO to handle this large number of test outputs will be presented.

The CMS Phase II Outer Tracker Upgrade at Fermilab

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will be upgraded to increase the instantaneous luminosity up to 5−7.5×10 34 cm −2 s −1 . To face these challenging conditions the CMS tracking system must be updated, using modules that on the one hand are able to cope with high radiations and on the other hand can provide information to the L-1 trigger selection. This report describes the results of some tests on the new tracking modules at the FNAL test beam facility. In particular half of one module was irradiated by 400 MeV protons (total fluence comparable to the one expected through the lifetime of the experiment) and then some analysis were performed on both the irradiated and not irradiated side of the detector with a 120 GeV proton beam. In this report, the efficiency and noise occupancy analysis are presented, with focus on the main critical issues encountered.

Status of the data acquisition, trigger, and slow control systems of the Mu2e experiment at Fermilab

The Mu2e experiment at the Fermilab will search for a coherent neutrinoless conversion of a muon into an electron in the field of an aluminum nucleus with a sensitivity improvement by a factor of 10,000 over existing limits. In this work, the Mu2e Trigger and Data Acquisition System (TDAQ) uses otsdaq framework as the online Data Acquisition System (DAQ) solution. Developed at Fermilab, otsdaq integrates several framework components — an artdaq-based DAQ, an art-based event processing, and an EPICS-based detector control system (DCS), and provides a uniform multi-user interface to its components through a web browser. Data streams from the Mu2e tracker and calorimeter are handled by the artdaq-based DAQ and processed by a one-level software trigger implemented within the art framework. Events accepted by the trigger have their data combined, post-trigger, with the separately read out data from the Mu2e Cosmic Ray Veto system. Foundation of the Mu2e DCS, EPICS – an Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System – is an open-source platform for monitoring, controlling, alarming, and archiving. A prototype of the TDAQ and the DCS systems has been built and tested over the last three years at Fermilab’s Feynman Computing Center, and now the production system installation is underway. This work presents their status and focus on the installation plans and procedures for racks, workstations, network switches, gateway computers, DAQ hardware, slow controls implementation, and testing.
