Urban-Scale Control of School Bus Fleet Charging and Discharging Strategies Using Single and Multi-Stage Optimization

This paper presents a dual-strategy approach to optimizing charging and discharging schedules for school bus fleets, using the limited charging infrastructure effectively. We aim to ensure that each bus is fully charged for daily operations and aids in grid stability during peak demand. The first strategy utilizes linear programming to schedule overnight charging at available station sockets and strategic discharging during peak periods, efficiently coordinating limited resources. The second strategy employs metaheuristic techniques for continuous optimization, focusing on precise power requirements and offering greater flexibility than the linear model.

Resilience Assessment for Distribution Systems during Hurricanes: A Learning-Based Framework

This paper presents a proactive strategy for hurricane-resilient distribution systems. It proposes a Bayesian Neural Network-based outage prediction model considering various parameters, including electrical components, and weather and environmental factors. Addressing challenges in imbalanced outage datasets, a Bias-Variance Tradeoff method is proposed. A resilience assessment model quantifies resilience indices, providing insights into system weaknesses. The approach identifies weak points and serves as a planning benchmark. Numerical results on the modified IEEE 123-node test system demonstrate effectiveness in realistic hurricane scenarios.

Distribution System Behind-the-Meter DERs: Estimation, Uncertainty Quantification, and Control

This paper summarizes the three-year technical activities of the IEEE Task Force (TF) on behind-the-meter (BTM) distributed energy resources (DERs): estimation, uncertainty quantification, and control. The potential grid services from BTM DERs are discussed in detail. The paper also reviews the state-of-the-art for BTM DERs visibility, uncertainty quantification, and, optimization and control. Furthermore, different aspects of the market structures associated with BTM DERs are covered, including emerging market and business models. Finally, needs and recommendations are provided for additional areas such as system protection, computing capabilities, algorithm development, market structure design, cyberinfrastructure and security, and hardware and software developments.
