Electrostatic Dehumidification

This project undertook an effort to experimentally demonstrate the ability to change the water content of an air volume through electrostatic, non-condensing means. Humid air is primarily a mixture of nitrogen, oxygen, argon, carbon dioxide and water vapor. Water is unique in this mixture because it possesses a relatively strong natural dipole moment. The physics of electrophoresis offers promise that electrostatic forces could be used to compel movement of water molecules, while leaving the other air components un-affected, which could be exploited to cause a concentration gradient of water within an air-stream.
