The Secret of the Svalbard Sea Ice Barrier

An elongated sea ice feature called the Svalbard sea ice barrier rapidly formed over an area in the Barents Sea to the east of Svalbard posing navigation hazards. The secret of its formation lies in the bottom bathymetry that governs the distribution of cold Arctic waters masses, which impacts sea ice growth on the water surface.

On the possibility of a ridge current along the Hawaiian Islands

Four evenly spaced aircraft-deployed expendable bathythermograph and concurrent satellite advanced very high resolution radiometer (AVHRR) surveys were made over an extended areas during a 1-year period to observe possible ridge currents along the Hawaiian Islands predicted or hypothesized by other investigators. None of the surveys found extended currents running along the ridge. Instead, fields of energetic eddies were found, and a curious cusp-shaped sea surface temperature pattern was observed in two of the AVHRR fields. Apparent cyclonic currents around the island of Hawaii were also observed. We conclude that either ridge currents do not exist or that they exist but are intermittent (episodic) in nature or exist in a form more complicated than could be observed by this study.

ARC - A source of multisensor satellite data for polar science

The NSF's Antarctic Research Center (ARC) has been established to furnish real-time polar-orbiting satellite data in support of Antarctic field studies, as well as to maintain a multisensor satellite data (MSD) archive for retrospective data analysis. An account is presently given of the ways in which the complementary nature of an MSD set can deepen understanding of Antarctic physical processes. An active microwave SAR with 30-m resolution and a radar altimeter will be added to the ARC resources later in this decade, as will the Earth Observing System.
