Preconditioning and the limit to the incompressible flow equations

The use of preconditioning methods to accelerate the convergence to a steady state for both the incompressible and compressible fluid dynamic equations are considered. The relation between them for both the continuous problem and the finite difference approximation is also considered. The analysis relies on the inviscid equations. The preconditioning consists of a matrix multiplying the time derivatives. Hence, the steady state of the preconditioned system is the same as the steady state of the original system. For finite difference methods the preconditioning can change and improve the steady state solutions. An application to flow around an airfoil is presented.

Flux-vector splitting and Runge-Kutta methods for the Euler equations

Runge-Kutta schemes have been used as a method of solving the Euler equations exterior to an airfoil. In the past this has been coupled with central differences and an artificial vesocity in space. In this study the Runge-Kutta time-stepping scheme is coupled with an upwinded space approximation based on flux-vector splitting. Several acceleration techniques are also considered including a local time step, residual smoothing and multigrid.

Computational methods for ideal compressible flow

Conservative dissipative difference schemes for computing one dimensional flow are introduced, and the recognition and representation of flow discontinuities are discussed. Multidimensional methods are outlined. Second order finite volume schemes are introduced. Conversion of difference schemes for a single linear convection equation into schemes for the hyperbolic system of the nonlinear conservation laws of ideal compressible flow is explained. Approximate Riemann solvers are presented. Monotone initial value interpolation; and limiters, switches, and artificial dissipation are considered.

On the relation between upwind-differencing schemes of Godunov, Engquist-Osher and Roe

The upwind differencing first order schemes of Godunov, Engquist-Osher and Roe are discussed on the basis of the inviscid Burgers equations. The differences between the schemes are interpreted as differences between the approximate Riemann solutions on which their numerical flux functions are based. Special attention is given to the proper formulation of these schemes when a source term is present. Second order two step schemes, based on the numerical flux functions of the first order schemes are also described. The schemes are compared in a numerical experiment, and recommendations on their use are included.
