Reactive capture and electrochemical conversion of CO 2 with ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents

Ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have tremendous potential for reactive capture and conversion (RCC) of CO 2 due to their wide electrochemical stability window, low volatility, and high CO 2 solubility. There is environmental and economic interest in the direct utilization of the captured CO 2 using electrified and modular processes that forgo the thermal- or pressure-swing regeneration steps to concentrate CO 2 , eliminating the need to compress, transport, or store the gas. The conventional electrochemical conversion of CO 2 with aqueous electrolytes presents limited CO 2 solubility and high energy requirement to achieve industrially relevant products. Additionally, aqueous systems have competitive hydrogen evolution. In the past decade, there has been significant progress toward the design of ILs and DESs, and their composites to separate CO 2 from dilute streams. In parallel, but not necessarily in synergy, there have been studies focused on a few select ILs and DESs for electrochemical reduction of CO 2 , often diluting them with aqueous or non-aqueous solvents. The resulting electrode–electrolyte interfaces present a complex speciation for RCC. In this review, we describe how the ILs and DESs are tuned for RCC and specifically address the CO 2 chemisorption and electroreduction mechanisms. Critical bulk and interfacial properties of ILs and DESs are discussed in the context of RCC, and the potential of these electrolytes are presented through a techno-economic evaluation.

Key Experimental Considerations When Evaluating Functional Ionic Liquids for Combined Capture and Electrochemical Conversion of CO 2

Ionic liquids (ILs) are considered functional electrolytes for the electrocatalytic reduction of CO 2 (ECO 2 R) due to their role in the double-layer structure formation and increased CO 2 availability at the electrode surface, which reduces the voltage requirement. However, not all ILs are the same, considering the purity and degree of the functionality of the IL. Further, there are critical experimental factors that impact the evaluation of ILs for ECO 2 R including the reference electrode, working electrode construction, cosolvent selection, cell geometry, and whether the electrochemical cell is a single compartment or a divided cell. Here, we describe improved synthesis methods of imidazolium cyanopyrrolide IL for electrochemical studies in consideration of precursor composition and reaction time. We explored how IL with cosolvents (i.e. acetonitrile, dimethylformamide, dimethyl sulfoxide, propylene carbonate, and n-methyl-2-pyrrolidone) affects conductivity, CO 2 mass transport, and ECO 2 R activation overpotential together with the effects of electrode materials (Sn, Ag, Au, and glassy carbon). Acetonitrile was found to be the best solvent for lowering the onset potential and increasing the catalytic current density for the production of CO owing to the enhanced ion mobility in combination with the silver electrode. Further, the ECO 2 R activity of molecular catalysts Ni(cyclam)Cl 2 and iron tetraphenylsulfonato porphyrin (FeTPPS) on the carbon cloth electrode maintained high Faradaic efficiencies for CO in the presence of the IL. This study presents best practices for examining nontraditional multifunctional electrolytes amenable to integrated CO 2 capture and conversion technologies for homogeneous and heterogeneous ECO 2 R.

Electrochemical control over stoichiometry via cation intercalation into Chevrel-phase sulphides (Cu x Mo 6 S 8 , x = 1-3)

Herein this work presents a systematic investigation of the electrochemical intercalation of aqueous copper cations into the Chevrel phase (CP) Mo 6 S 8 and its effect on the host's electronic and structural characteristics as a function of stoichiometry. The electrochemical potentials at which copper intercalates into the CP Mo 6 S 8 host in 1 M CuSO 4 were identified for Cu x Mo 6 S 8 (x = 1–3) as 0.23 V, 0.11 V, and 0.055 V (vs. Cu/Cu 2+ ) for Cu 1 Mo 6 S 8 , Cu 2 Mo 6 S 8 , and Cu 3 Mo 6 S 8 , respectively, and correlated via ex situ PXRD to stoichiometric content. Potentials were also identified that yield non-stoichiometric phases with traceable Cu content-dependent structural changes. Ab initio DFT calculations were performed to probe thermodynamic stability of Cu x Mo 6 S 8 CP compositions and the metal-to-semiconductor transitions as a function of copper content. Lastly, we demonstrate that the SK-pre-edge intensity is a successful probe for intercalant content: as copper equivalents increase, so does charge transfer to the partially occupied S 3p orbitals, resulting in a decrease in the pre-edge intensity corresponding to the excitation of a S 1s-to-3p/Mo 4d hybridized orbital.

Ln 10 S 14 O (Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Sm) Oxysulfides: A Series of Direct n-Type Semiconductors

Lanthanoid oxysulfides are promising materials for technological applications owing to their magnetic, photoluminescent, catalytic, and optoelectronic properties. In this work, we report the solid-state synthesis and structural characterization of Ln 10 S 14 O (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm) oxysulfides. Then, we present a thorough discussion on their electronic and photophysical properties. Through Tauc plot analysis and the derivation of the absorption spectrum fitting method (DASF), we determine that all oxysulfides have direct band gaps with energies of 2.84 eV (La), 2.02 eV (Ce), 2.56 eV (Pr), 2.64 eV (Nd), and 2.41 eV (Sm). Furthermore, surface photovoltage spectroscopy (SPS) shows photovoltage (ΔCPD) values of –0.4 to –1.1 V for La-, Pr-, Nd-, and Sm-containing compounds when illuminated near the optical band gap, indicating that these oxysulfides are n-type semiconductors, which is consistent with Mott–Schottky analysis. Photovoltages under sub-band gap illumination energy and photovoltage decay data suggest mid-band gap states possibly arising from the lanthanoid 4f orbitals and/or defects within the crystal structure or at the particle surfaces. These photophysical properties suggest possible applications of the oxysulfides in photoelectrochemical and photovoltaic energy conversion.

X-ray absorption spectroscopy insights on the structure anisotropy and charge transfer in Chevrel Phase chalcogenides

Here, the electronic structure and local coordination of binary (Mo 6 T 8 ) and ternary Chevrel Phases (M x Mo 6 T 8 ) are investigated for a range of metal intercalant and chalcogen compositions. We evaluate differences in the Mo L 3 -edge and K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure across the suite of chalcogenides M x Mo 6 T 8 (M = Cu, Ni, x = 1–2, T = S, Se, Te), quantifying the effect of compositional and structural modification on electronic structure. Furthermore, we highlight the expansion, contraction, and anisotropy of Mo 6 clusters within these Chevrel Phase frameworks through extended X-ray absorption fine structure analysis. Our results show that metal-to-cluster charge transfer upon intercalation is dominated by the chalcogen acceptors, evidenced by significant changes in their respective X-ray absorption spectra in comparison to relatively unaffected Mo cations. These results explain the effects of metal intercalation on the electronic and local structure of Chevrel Phases across various chalcogen compositions, and aid in rationalizing electron distribution within the structure.

Synthesis and thermodynamics of uranium-incorporated α-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles

Hematite nanoparticles were synthesized with U(VI) in circumneutral water through a coprecipitation and hydrothermal treatment process. XRD, TEM, and EXAFS analyses reveal that uranium may aggregate along grain boundaries and occupy Fe sites within hematite. The described synthesis method produces crystalline, single-phase iron oxide nanoparticles absent of surface-bound uranyl complexes. EXAFS data were comparable to spectra from existing studies whose syntheses were more representative of naturally occurring, extended aging processes. Herein this work provides and validates an accelerated method of synthesizing uranium-immobilized iron oxide nanoparticles for further mechanistic studies. High temperature oxide melt solution calorimetry measurements were performed to calculate the thermodynamic stability of uranium-incorporated iron oxide nanoparticles. Increasing uranium content within hematite resulted in more positive formation enthalpies. Standard formation enthalpies of U x Fe 2–2x O 3 were as high as 76.88 ± 2.83 kJ/mol relative to their binary oxides, or -764.04 ± 3.74 kJ/mol relative to their constituent elements, at x = 0.037. Data on the thermodynamic stability of uranium retention pathways may assist in predicting waste uranyl remobilization, as well as in developing more effective methods to retain uranium captured from aqueous environments.
