Creep Measurement Video Extensometer

Understanding material behavior under load is critical to the efficient and accurate design of advanced aircraft and spacecraft. Technologies such as the one disclosed here allow accurate creep measurements to be taken automatically, reducing error. The goal was to develop a non-contact, automated system capable of capturing images that could subsequently be processed to obtain the strain characteristics of these materials during deformation, while maintaining adequate resolution to capture the true deformation response of the material. The measurement system comprises a high-resolution digital camera, computer, and software that work collectively to interpret the image.

Extending Grid Computing to Remote Locations

NASA Glenn Research Center, in cooperation with NASA Ames and geologists from the University of Cincinnati and Bowling Green State University has extended the computational capabilities of the information Power Grid to remote research sites. The combination of satellite (EOS) data acquisition and the IPG processing provides geologists with the ability to identify the key mineralogical features at the research site. The underlying connectivity for this research environment is provided by the Numerical Research and Education Network (NREN) using a combination of terrestrial and mobile satellite-based networking solutions. Our approach not only speeds the process of scientific discovery, but also serves as a simple demonstration of NASA's capacity for geological classification and exploration of remote sites such as the Martian surface. The NASA Glenn Demonstrations combines satellite (EOS) data acquisition and the computational capabilities or the Information Power Grid (IPG) to provide geologists with the ability to identify key mineralogical features in near real-time of an area in study. This capability could someday allow geological classification of rocks and minerals of remote sites such as the Martian surface.

SmaggIce User Guide

SmaggIce (Surface Modeling And Grid Generation for Iced Airfoils) is one of NASNs aircraft icing research codes developed at the Glenn Research Center. It is a software toolkit used in the process of aerodynamic performance prediction of iced airfoils. It includes tools which complement the 2D grid-based Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) process: geometry probing; surface preparation for gridding: smoothing and re-discretization of geometry. Future releases will also include support for all aspects of gridding: domain decomposition; perimeter discretization; grid generation and modification.

Geometry Modeling and Grid Generation for "Icing Effects" and "Ice Accretion" Simulations on Airfoils

There are two distinct icing-related problems for airfoils that can be simulated. One is predicting the effects of ice on the aerodynamic performance of airfoils when ice geometry is known ("icing effects" study). The other is simulating ice accretion under specified icing conditions ("ice accretion" simulation). This paper will address development of two different software packages for two-dimensional geometry preparation and grid generation for both "icing effects" and "ice accretion" studies.
