Healing Gradient Degradation in Nb3Sn SRF Cavities Using a Recoating Method

Despite having advantageous superconducting properties, Nb3Sn superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) cavities still have practical challenges compared to Nb SRF cavities due to the brittle nature of Nb3Sn. Performance degradation can occur when a Nb3Sn SRF cavity experiences mechanical stresses such as during handling and tuning of the cavity. In this study, we present a potential treatment for SRF cavities that have experienced stress induced performance degradation that involves a recoating procedure. The degraded cavity is coated with a small amount of Sn using a single step vapor-diffusion methodology. Using this approach we can recover a significant portion of the lost performance of a Nb3Sn SRF cavity.

Improving Nb3Sn Cavity Performance Using Centrifugal Barrel Polishing

Nb3Sn superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) cavities have been an ongoing research topic for many years motivated by the potential for higher accelerating gradients and quality factors compared to niobium SRF cavities. The highest performing Nb3Sn cavities are manufactured using tin vapor-diffusion coating, which creates a Nb3Sn film with a surface roughness of around 100-200 nm. This is thought to be one of the limiting factors for the accelerating gradient of Nb3Sn cavities due to enhancement of magnetic field near sharp surface features. To smooth Nb3Sn SRF cavities, we have developed a mechanical polishing procedure which uses centrifugal barrel polishing to smooth the surface followed by a secondary tin coating step to repair the surface. We show that the accelerating field of a Nb3Sn SRF cavity is improved by applying this procedure. We also investigate the quench mechanism of the polished cavity by utilizing temperature mapping to measure which regions of the cavity e xperience heating during RF operation. We then cut samples from these regions and analyze the film microstructure and chemical composition in 3D using EDS and EBSD measurements together with a focused ion-beam (FIB) tomography technique.

Studies on the Fundamental Mechanisms of Niobium Electropolishing

To improve the superconducting performance of niobium SRF cavities, electropolishing (EP) with a sulfuric and hydroflouric acid mixture is used. The chemistry of this reaction is complex due to the interactions between diffusion mechanisms, surface oxide structure, and multiple chemical species. Past studies on the EP process have produced a certain set of optimum parameters that have been used successfully for a long time. However, two recent developments have called the efficacy of the existing EP process into question. Since the introduction of nitrogen doping the surface quality of some cavities has been very poor. Also, EP performed at colder than standard temperatures leads to an increase in the cavity performance. To understand these questions, we perform a multivariate study on the EP process using niobium test samples electropolished at different temperatures and potentials. We find that electropolishing at lower potentials leads to rough surface features such as pitting and grain etching. Some of the surface features show similarities to features seen in niobium cavities. The effect of electropolishing temperature is not clear based on the results of this study.
