Understanding Chemo-Mechanical Stability of Protonic Ceramic Cells Through Electronic Conduction in the BaCe 0.7 Zr 0.1 Y 0.1 Yb 0.1 O 3-δ Electrolyte

BaCe 0.7 Zr 0.1 Y 0.1 Yb 0.1 O 3-δ (BCZYYb) is a promising ceramic electrolyte for reversible protonic ceramic cells. It is reported that BCZYYb-based cells show excellent long-term durability, particularly in the electrolysis mode, in contrast to the cells based on the conventional electrolyte yttria-stabilized zirconia. In this study, we investigate the chemo-mechanical stability behavior (a low tendency of delamination) of the BCZYYb-based protonic ceramic cells in terms of local electronic conduction in the electrolyte. The local electronic conductivity of the BCZYYb electrolyte is determined using Pt-probe-embedded cells near each electrode interface. The BCZYYb electrolyte exhibits sufficient p-type conductivity (∼10 −3 S cm −1 ) near the oxygen electrode (corresponding p O 2 : 5.27–21 × 10 −2 atm) and n-type conductivity (∼10 −4 S cm −1 ) near the hydrogen electrode (corresponding p O 2 : 0.99–1.30 × 10 −24 atm) at 600 °C. A standard cell is prepared and tested over long-term in the fuel cell (at positive and negative voltages) and electrolysis modes. The cell exhibits stable performance without delamination or cracks in both operating modes, owing to local electronic conduction.

Conversion Kinetics and Ionic Conductivity in Na-β”-Alumina + YSZ (Naβ”AY) Sodium Solid Electrolyte via Vapor Phase Conversion Process

Sodium ion batteries have been receiving increasing attention and may see potential revival in the near future, particularly in large-scale grid energy storage coupling with wind and solar power generation, due to the abundant sodium resources, low cost, and sufficiently high energy density. Among the known sodium ion conductors, the Na-β”-alumina electrolyte remains highly attractive because of its high ionic conductivity. This study focuses on the vapor phase synthesis of a Na-β”-Alumina + YSZ (Naβ”AY) composite sodium electrolyte, which has higher mechanical strength and stability than conventional single phase β”-Alumina. The objectives are the measurement of conversion kinetics through a newly developed weight-gain based model and the determination of sodium ionic conductivity in the composite electrolyte. Starting samples contained ~70 vol% α-Alumina and ~30 vol% YSZ (3 mol% Y 2 O 3 stabilized Zirconia) with and without a thin alumina surface layer made by sintering in air at 1600 °C. The sintered samples were placed in a powder of Na-β”-alumina and heat-treated at 1250 °C for various periods. Sample dimensions and weight were measured as a function of heat treatment time. The conversion of α-Alumina in the α-Alumina + YSZ composite into Naβ”AY occurred by coupled diffusion of sodium ions through Na-β”-alumina and of oxygen ions through YSZ, effectively diffusing Na2O. From the analysis of the time dependence of sample mass and dimensions, the effective diffusion coefficient of Na 2 O through the sample, D eff , was estimated to be 1.74 x 10 -7 cm2 s -1 , and the effective interface transfer parameter, k eff , was estimated as 2.33 x 10 -6 cm s -1 . By depositing a thin alumina coating layer on top of the bulk composite, the chemical diffusion coefficient of oxygen through single phase Na-β”-alumina was estimated as 4.35 x 10 -10 cm 2 s -1 . An AC impedance measurement was performed on a fully converted Naβ”AY composite, and the conductivity of the composite electrolyte was 1.3 x 10 -1 S cm -1 at 300 °C and 1.6 x 10 -3 S cm -1 at 25 °C, indicating promising applications in solid state or molten salt batteries at low to intermediate temperatures.

Theoretical Analysis of Critical Conditions for Crack Formation and Propagation, and Optimal Operation of SOECs

A theoretical analysis on crack formation and propagation was performed based on the coupling between the electrochemical process, classical elasticity, and fracture mechanics. The chemical potential of oxygen, thus oxygen partial pressure, at the oxygen electrode-electrolyte interface ( μ O 2 OE∣El ) was investigated as a function of transport properties, electrolyte thickness and operating conditions (e.g., steam concentration, constant current, and constant voltage). Our analysis shows that: a lower ionic area specific resistance (ASR), r i O E , and a higher electronic ASR ( r e O E ) of the oxygen electrode/electrolyte interface are in favor of suppressing crack formation. The μ O 2 O E ∣ E l , thus local pO 2 , are sensitive towards the operating parameters under galvanostatic or potentiostatic electrolysis. Constant current density electrolysis provides better robustness, especially at a high current density with a high steam content. While constant voltage electrolysis leads to greater variations of μ O 2 O E ∣ E l . Constant current electrolysis, however, is not suitable for an unstable oxygen electrode because μ O 2 O E ∣ E l can reach a very high value with a gradually increased r i O E . A crack may only occur under certain conditions when p O 2 T P B > p c r .

Thermodynamic, Kinetic and Electrochemical Studies on Mixed Proton, Oxygen Ion and Electron (Hole) Conductors

The report contains a summary of work done during the period of performance September 1, 2015 through August 31, 2021. The principal objective of the work was to conduct thermodynamic, kinetic and electrochemical studies on mixed proton, oxygen ion and electron (hole) conductors. The project also involved studies on cation conductors such as Li + and Na + ion conductors of particular relevance to batteries. The work involved theory and experiments. Since any use of ionic conductors necessarily entails two electrodes, electrode reactions are central to the overall transport processes from one electrode, through the electrolyte, to the other electrode. The role of interfaces and electrochemical reactions is thus of central importance. Transport processes in fuel cells, electrolyzers, lithium batteries and sodium batteries were examined using linear non-equilibrium thermodynamics, which is based on the assumption of small departures from thermodynamic equilibrium. The main approach involved expressing transport processes using the Onsager equations which naturally include coupling of thermodynamic flows and thermodynamic forces. The basic tenet of linear nonequilibrium thermodynamics is the existence of local thermodynamic equilibrium which means that all thermodynamic functions are locally defined. Thus, chemical potentials of various species are defined locally as a function of position and also of time. The existence of local thermodynamic equilibrium has fundamental implications concerning transport of electronic species through a predominantly ionic conductor.

Design concept of co-ionic conducting solid oxide electrolyte for stable operation in a cell-imbalanced fuel cell stack

A bilayer composite electrolyte comprising BaCe 0.85 Y 0.15 O 3-d (BCY15) – Gd 0.2 Ce 0.8 O 2-d (GDC20) at the anode side and BaZr 0.85 Y 0.15 O 3-d (BZY15) – Nd 0.1 Ce 0.9 O 2-d (NDC10) at the cathode side is designed for improving the stability of co-ionic conducting solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) in a cell imbalanced stack. Contrary to the single layer structured SOFCs, the bi-layer cell stably operates without electrode delamination under negative voltage conditions. We measure local internal p O 2 values using embedded Pt probes. Based on these values, local electronic conduction is estimated in combination with four probe DC conductivity measurements. It is found that n-type conductivity (~10 –3 Scm –1 ) and p-type conductivity (10 –5 –10 –4 Scm –1 ) are developed in the BCY15-GDC20 near the anode side and in the BZY15-NDC10 near the cathode side, respectively. Finally, the results indicate that local electronic conduction in electrolyte regions near both the anode and cathode interfaces is a crucial factor for the durability of co-ionic SOFCs under negative voltage operation. We therefore suggest the bi-layer configuration as a practical solution to protect co-ionic SOFCs in a cell-imbalanced stack.

Sodium, Silver and Lithium-Ion Conducting β''-Alumina + YSZ Composites, Ionic Conductivity and Stability

Na-β''-alumina (Na 2 O.~6Al 2 O 3 ) is known to be an excellent sodium ion conductor in battery and sensor applications. In this study we report fabrication of Na- β''-alumina + YSZ dual phase composite to mitigate moisture and CO 2 corrosion that otherwise can lead to degradation in pure Na-β''-alumina conductor. Subsequently, we heat-treated the samples in molten AgNO 3 and LiNO3 to respectively form Ag-β''-alumina + YSZ and Li-β''-alumina + YSZ to investigate their potential applications in silver- and lithium-ion solid state batteries. Ion exchange fronts were captured via SEM and EDS techniques. Their ionic conductivities were measured using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Both ion exchange rates and ionic conductivities of these composite ionic conductors were firstly reported here and measured as a function of ion exchange time and temperature.

Locally developed electronic conduction in a yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolyte for durable solid oxide fuel cells

In the present work, anode supported solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) based on a YSZ single layer electrolyte with locally developed electronic conduction near the anode side is fabricated to improve the cell durability under negative voltage conditions. A ceria added Ni/YSZ anode functional layer is utilized and co-sintered with the YSZ electrolyte at 1460 °C. Cerium ions are diffused into a limited region of the YSZ layer (~6 μm), establishing a ceria doped YSZ region. We successfully demonstrate that this YSZ single layer cell can operate stably for ~100 h without anode/electrolyte interface delamination, even under a negative voltage. The embedded probe technique and theoretical calculation reveal that the internal oxygen partial pressure (near the anode) is substantially reduced (stabilized) by means of local electronic conduction of ceria doped YSZ. Thus, we propose an SOFC electrolyte design comprising a YSZ single layer with a ceria added anode functional layer (locally formed ceria doped YSZ in the electrolyte) as a protection method against fuel cell stack degradation caused by negative voltage operation.

Measurement of Ionic Conductivity and Electrode Polarization at Low Temperatures on 8YSZ by a DC Technique

Measurement of ionic conductivity and electrode polarization resistance on a 8YSZ sample with platinum paste electrodes was conducted using a DC method with high input impedance meters over a temperature range from 119°C to 589°C. Over the entire temperature range, the meter resistance was much larger than the sample resistance including the polarization resistance. At lower temperatures, a faraday cage was used to minimize noise. The measured polarization resistance was also verified using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Ionic conductivity of 8YSZ exhibited Arrhenius behavior with an activation energy of ~1.1 eV, in good agreement with the literature. In the low current regime, electrode kinetics could be described by the linearized form of the Butler-Volmer equation. At higher current densities, electrode kinetics exhibited Tafel behavior. The polarization resistance exhibited Arrhenius behavior with the activation energy ranging between 1.05 and 1.27 eV. The present work shows that electrode polarizations can be investigated using a DC method. The approach may allow study of different electrodes in various atmospheres using one sample.

On Space Charge and Spatial Distribution of Defects in Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia

Space charge in 8YSZ is examined theoretically. The Poisson-Boltzmann equation is solved by free energy minimization. The Helmholtz free energy of a crystal containing various defects is minimized subject to two constraints: The total dopant concentration is fixed and the maximum amount of surface charge is limited by site density. Large dopant concentration leads to defect concentrations which deviate from Boltzmann distribution. When free energy isminimized assuming all defects attain their equilibrium distributions, the corresponding electrochemical potentials are equilibrated through the crystal. These calculations correspond to long annealing times. Calculations are also conducted for a case in which only oxygen vacancies are allowed to equilibrate at lower temperature after a high temperature anneal. At lower temperatures, cations are frozen corresponding to high temperature anneal. In this case, only the electrochemical potential of oxygen vacancies equilibrates. In all cases Y segregates to grain boundaries/free surfaces lowering the corresponding oxygen vacancy concentration, consistent with reported effect of space charge on grain boundary conductivity. The results show a significant concentration of oxygen vacancies form defect complexes with Y dopant. Thus, free oxygen vacancy concentration is considerably lower than the usually assumed electroneutrality condition based on total dopant concentration.

Nanostructured Cathodes for Solid Oxide Fuel Cells by a Solution Spray-Coating Process

Composite nano-cathodes containing Sr-doped LaMnO 3 (LSM) and Gd 2 O 3 -doped CeO 2 (GDC) were deposited on yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) discs and YSZ/NiO + YSZ bi-layer discs using an aqueous solution. The samples were heated over a range of temperatures from 700°C to 1200°C to form LSM + GDC porous films. The crystallite size was estimated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) Scherrer formula. The crystallite size was in the ~3 nm to ~80 nm range. Polarization resistance was measured by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) from 400°C to 700°C. Nano-cathodes of ~70 nm thickness fired at 700°C exhibited polarization resistance of ~0.23 Ωcm 2 at 700°C. By contrast, LSM + YSZ cathodes made by a conventional process exhibited polarization resistance of ~2 Ωcm 2 . Fuel cell tests were conducted at 700°C on cells with nano-cathodes and conventional LSM + YSZ cathode. The maximum power density was ~0.51 Wcm –2 with nano-cathodes. By contrast, the corresponding power density with conventional LSM + YSZ cathodes was ~0.11 Wcm –2 . Here, the present work shows that very thin cathode functional layers can be deposited on sintered YSZ/NiO + YSZ bi-layer discs by using an aqueous solution. This approach in principle could be extended to large area cells.
