Quasielastic $\overrightarrow{^{3}He}$ $(\overrightarrow{e},e′)$ asymmetry in the threshold region with a longitudinally polarized target

We report on the measurements of the double-spin asymmetry from electron- 3 He scattering in the threshold region of two- and three-body breakup of 3 He for 4-momentum transfer values of 0.1 and 0.2 (GeV/c) 2 . The measurement was done at Jefferson Lab using a polarized 3 He target with its spin aligned parallel to the beam direction. This asymmetry is sensitive to a combination of spin-dependent response functions not previously measured and may highlight differences in two body forces, meson-exchange currents and final-state interactions. The results of this measurement serve as a test of our understanding of few-body systems. When compared with calculations from plane wave impulse approximation and Faddeev calculations, we found that the latter, which use modern nuclear potentials and prescriptions for meson-exchange currents, demonstrate an overall good agreement with data.

Intrinsic energy and time resolution of the Jefferson Lab Hall C Neutral Particle Spectrometer

The Neutral Particle Spectrometer (NPS) is an advanced calorimeter designed to measure neutral electro- magnetic particles with high precision in energy, time, and position, under conditions of high luminosity and significant background. Integrated into the experimental setup of Hall C at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, the NPS plays a critical role in studies of nucleon structure through exclusive and semi- inclusive reaction channels. Here, this paper presents an assessment of the detector’s performance characteristics, specifically its energy and timing resolution, derived from elastic electron–proton scattering data. We report an energy resolution between 1.2% and 1.3% in the 4.5–7.3 GeV range, and an intrinsic timing resolution better than 200 ps for energies above 500 MeV. These results serve as a reference for current and future precision measurements in hadronic physics.

Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering Using a Positron Beam in Hall-C at Jefferson Lab

In this study we propose to use the High Momentum Spectrometer of Hall C combined with the Neutral Particle Spectrometer (NPS) to perform high precision measurements of the Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) cross section using a beam of positrons. The combination of measurements with oppositely charged incident beams is the only unambiguous way to disentangle the contribution of the DVCS 2 term in the photon electroproduction cross section from its interference with the Bethe-Heitler amplitude. This provides a stronger way to constrain the Generalized Parton Distributions of the nucleon. A wide range of kinematics accessible with an 11 GeV beam off an unpolarized proton target will be covered. The $\mathcal{Q}^2$-dependence of each contribution will be measured independently.

Electromagnetic calorimeters based on scintillating lead tungstate crystals for experiments at Jefferson Lab

A new electromagnetic calorimeter consisting of 140 lead tungstate (PbWO 4 ) scintillating crystals was constructed for the PrimEx- η experiment at Jefferson lab. The calorimeter was integrated into the data acquisition and trigger systems of the GlueX detector and used in the experiment to reconstruct Compton scattering events. The experiment started collecting data in the spring of 2019 and acquired about 30% of the required statistics. The calorimeter is a prototype for two PbWO 4 -based detectors: the Neutral Particle Spectrometer (NPS) and the lead tungstate insert of the Forward CALorimeter (FCAL) of the GlueX detector. The article presents the design and performance of the Compton calorimeter and gives a brief overview of the FCAL and NPS projects.

The CLAS12 forward electromagnetic calorimeter

The CLAS12 Forward Detector includes six independent lead-scintillator electromagnetic sampling calorimeters to provide the primary electron trigger and extend the CLAS12 detection capability to photons and neutrons. Each calorimeter package consists of two modules, the legacy Electromagnetic Calorimeter (EC) previously used in the CLAS detector, and a new pre-shower calorimeter (PCAL) located in front of the EC to extend the total detector radiation length, in order to fully absorb the electromagnetic showers induced by electrons with energies up to 12 GeV. Both calorimeters use a novel triangular hodoscope geometry with stereo readout. The PCAL uses an upgraded design to provide the high spatial resolution necessary for reconstructing π 0 and η decays, and neutrons with high efficiency. Here, this paper treats the design, construction, and calibration of the PCAL and the preliminary combined performance of both detectors.
