Using observations from the Global-scale Observations of the Limb and Disk (GOLD) mission, we investigate post-sunset ionospheric responses to the September 2019 Antarctic sudden stratospheric warming –first ever from a synoptic perspective. Observations reveal a prevalent quasi-6-day periodicity in the equatorial ionization anomaly region over South America and the Atlantic, coincident with enhanced quasi-6-day wave (Q6DW) activity in the mesosphere (Liu et al., 2021, https://doi.org/10.1029/2020JA028909). The atmosphere-ionosphere coupling via large-scale waves is rarely studied over the ocean due to the lack of observations. More importantly, further analyses suggest that multiple pathways are involved in transmitting the quasi-6-day periodicity from the middle atmosphere into the post-sunset F-region ionosphere, including modulation of F-region field aligned winds and pre-reversal enhancements by the tides and or Q6DW. A remarkable depletion in electron density, attributable to the overall change in thermosphere composition driven by the dissipative tides and or Q6DWs, is also seen during the period of enhanced Q6DW activity.

The NOAA-20 (N-20) VIIRS has successfully operated for more than two years since its launch in November 2017. Shortly after completing its initial instrument check-outs and post-launch testing (PLT) activities, the N-20 VIIRS sensor data records (SDR) achieved the beta, provisional, and validated maturity status in January, February, and April 2018, respectively. In this paper, we briefly describe the instrument on-orbit operation and calibration activities, provide an overall assessment of its on-orbit performance, and discuss the methodologies developed to maintain and improve sensor calibration and data quality. As illustrated in this paper, the N-20 VIIRS continues to perform with excellent stability, allowing high-quality environmental data records (EDR) to be generated from its well-calibrated SDR.

Motivations (Ensure a Higher Level of Confidence in the Predictability & Reliability of Numerical Simulation for Multiscale Complex Nonlinear Fluid Problems) - The last two decades have been an era when computation is ahead of analysis & when very large scale practical computations are increasingly used in poorly understood multiscale complex nonlinear physical problems & non-traditional fields (Especially when computations offer the ONLY way of generating this type of data limited simulations). - At present some of the numerical uncertainties can be explained and minimized by traditional numerical analysis and standard CFD practices. However, such practices, usually based on linearized analysis, MIGHT NOT be sufficient for strongly nonlinear and/or stiff problems. - We need a good understanding of the nonlinear behavior of numerical schemes being used as an integral part of code verification, validation and certification.
