Non-destructive Post-Transient Examination Results of the MOXTOP-1 Experiment

The MOXTOP-1 experiment has been assembled and irradiated in INL’s HFEF and TREAT facilities followed by disassembly of the experiment to enable initial post-transient examination. Results of neutron radiography of the fuel pin still in the THOR capsule were somewhat inconclusive due to the additional scatter and attenuation from the iron heat sink included in the design. Nonetheless, no obvious failure or fuel relocation could be identified in the radiography. Following disassembly of the fuel pin from the capsule, initial visual inspections were performed, and documented via images obtained through the hot cell window. No obvious signs of fuel failure were identified, indicating that the fuel pin remained intact during the transient. Some discoloration was observed near the middle of the fuel pin, likely corresponding to the fueled zone indicating that that region may have reached a relatively high temperature. Pre-transient, and post-transient profilometry of the fuel pin were performed and compared. Some additional strain displacement in the bottom portion of the fuel zone is identified, but remains well below 1%.

Resumption of SFR Overpower Testing and Post-Transient Examination of the THOR-C-2 Irradiation Test

Transient overpower testing for fuel safety research and development has resumed at Idaho National Laboratory. The THOR-C-2 commissioning test has been performed and post-transient examination has been performed revealing the intended failure near the top of the fuel zone. This paves the way for future testing on previously irradiated fuels that will support fuel development and qualification.

FUEL PERFORMANCE STUDIES AT IDAHO NATIONAL LABORATORY MAKING USE OF THE BYRON FUEL SHIPMENT

In December of 2023 a shipment of commercially irradiated fuel rods from the Byron Generating Station in Illinois was successfully shipped to the Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) at Idaho National Laboratory (INL). The make-up of the rods includes a mix of cladding types from traditional ZirloTM, advanced zirconium alloys, and chrome coated ZirloTM. Burnups range from regular end of life values to over 70 GWd/MTU rod average. The R&D plan for the rods involves multiple projects from developing licensing data for new claddings to integral transient tests to support burnup extension efforts in the United States. The R&D began in early 2024 with the nondestructive examinations of the rods after which they will be sectioned for microscopy, mechanical testing, and analytical chemistry. Additionally, many rod segments will be refabricated into new test pins and inserted into a static water capsule for integral Reactivity Initiated Accident (RIA) and Loss of Coolant Accident (LOCA) testing at the TREAT reactor.
