Low-lying baryon resonances from lattice QCD

Recent results studying the masses and widths of low-lying baryon resonances in lattice QCD are presented. The S-wave Nπ scattering lengths for both total isospins I = 1/2 and I = 3/2 are inferred from the finite-volume spectrum below the inelastic threshold together with the I = 3/2 P-wave containing the Δ(1232) resonance. A lattice QCD computation employing a combined basis of three-quark and meson-baryon interpolating operators with definite momentum to determine the coupled channel $Σπ-N\bar{K}$ scattering amplitude in the Λ(1405) region is also presented. Our results support the picture of a two-pole structure suggested by theoretical approaches based on SU(3) chiral symmetry and unitarity.

Towards precise and accurate calculations of neutrinoless double-beta decay

We present the results of a National Science Foundation Project Scoping Workshop, the purpose of which was to assess the current status of calculations for the nuclear matrix elements governing neutrinoless double-beta decay and determine if more work on them is required. After reviewing important recent progress in the application of effective field theory, lattice quantum chromodynamics, and ab initio nuclear-structure theory to double-beta decay, we discuss the state of the art in nuclear-physics uncertainty quantification and then construct a roadmap for work in all these areas to fully complement the increasingly sensitive experiments in operation and under development. The roadmap includes specific projects in theoretical and computational physics as well as the use of Bayesian methods to quantify both intra- and inter-model uncertainties. Here, the goal of this ambitious program is a set of accurate and precise matrix elements, in all nuclei of interest to experimentalists, delivered together with carefully assessed uncertainties. Such calculations will allow crisp conclusions from the observation or non-observation of neutrinoless double-beta decay, no matter what new physics is at play.

Status of Lattice QCD Calculations of One and Two-Nucleon Matrix Elements

Lattice QCD calculations of basic hadronic quantities are now often performed with systematic control over the physical pion mass, continuum and infinite volume limits. This progress signals a new era in which lattice QCD will be used to compute basic properties of hadrons, nucleons and light nuclei directly from the Standard Model (SM). In particular, we will be able to use lattice QCD, combined with Effective Field Theory, to make quantitative statements about the interaction of SM matter and potential beyond the SM physics ranging from direct dark matter detection to permanent electric dipole moments. I will briefly review the status and challenges of lattice QCD calculations of select one- and two-nucleon matrix elements. These calculations are significantly more challenging than the basic quantities computed with all systematics controlled, but substantial progress is being made.

Collaboration 51 Correlation Function Analysis Suite (c51_corr_analysis) v0.1.0

This is a data analysis package designed for analyzing correlation functions generated with lattice QCD calculations. The purpose is to make a centralized software suite for use by all members of my collaboration, so that various members can spend less time developing their own analysis codes, and more time extracting the interesting physics from our calculations. There are also 3 independent collaborations that have expressed interest in using this code, so there is some expectation it will be used in the broader international lattice QCD community.
