On possible correlations in the photospheric magnetic field

A correlation analysis is performed upon the rate of change of the photospheric magnetic field in the north and south hemispheres of the sun. Both active region logs and data obtained from the daily Mount Wilson magnetograms are employed, and the analysis is performed for all available days, as well as for days in which active regions are near central meridian. The result of the analysis shows no correlation between these changes and it is concluded that local convective turbulence is more important than dynamo processes with regard to the appearance of individual active regions.

On the disappearance of a small sunspot group

The small sunspot group associated with Hale active region 17694 was observed jointly by the Mount Wilson and the Big Bear Solar Observatories, through the time of sunspot disappearance. The magnetic flux from the region was seen to decrease by about 10% per day during the observing interval. This was accompanied by fragmentation of the dominant spot as a supergranule network formed. No evidence for spreading or diffusion of the active region field was found.

On the dissolution of sunspot groups

The behavior of magnetic fluxes from active regions is investigated for times near sunspot disappearance. It is found that the magnetic fluxes decrease on or near the date the spot vanishes. This effect is investigated and it is concluded that it is actually due to changes in the field, rather than through dissipation of the active region fields. This is important in considerations of the large-scale behavior of solar magnetic fields.
