NASA MSFC Lunar Surface Simulator (LSS): A Facility for Lunar Relevant Environment Testing

NASA will resume crewed visits to the lunar surface beginning in the mid-2020s. Environmental testing is essential to developing and validating the hardware that will enable a sustained presence on the lunar surface. Lunar dust is one of the most pressing challenges that threatens the longevity of mechanical systems as well as the health of astronauts living and working on the Moon. Facilities that allow large pieces of hardware to be exposed to both lunar dust and the temperature and vacuum of the lunar environment are invaluable to the agency as well as to the broader community of international, academic, and industry partners with which the agency collaborates. Marshall Space Flight Center has outfitted one of its largest thermal vacuum chambers with regolith simulant beds to create the Lunar Surface Simulator (LSS).

AMEBoP: Additive Manufacturing Enabled Biofilm Prevention

Objective: Leverage additive manufacturing to fortify Environmental Control and Life Support Systems (ECLSS) manifolds and other vulnerable components against biofilm growth during dormancy by eliminating dead legs to reduce total stagnate fluid volume and available nutrients and by printing from inherently biocidal materials.

Caves as Planetary Analogs for GPS Denied, Low-Light Mapping and Navigation in Rugged Environments

KNaCK (Kinematic Navigation and Cartography Knapsack) is a backpack-mounted mobile mapping system. It can map its surroundings in 3 dimensions and localize itself in space using a LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) sensor and SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) algorithm. The KNaCK team is leveraging caves as a proving ground to refine technology for mapping and navigation on other worlds while simultaneously advancing the State of the Art for terrestrial cave exploration and study.

AMEBoP: Additive Manufacturing Enabled Biofilm Prevention

Leverage additive manufacturing to fortify ECLSS (Environmental Control and Life Support Systems) manifolds and other vulnerable components against biofilm growth during dormancy. This project aims to improve dormancy tolerance by eliminating dead legs to reduce stagnate fluid volume and to limit available nutrients, and by printing from inherently biocidal materials.
