The recovery and utilization of space suit range-of-motion data

A technique for recovering data for the range of motion of a subject wearing a space suit is described along with the validation of this technique on an EVA space suit. Digitized data are automatically acquired from video images of the subject; three-dimensional trajectories are recovered from these data, and can be displayed using three-dimensional computer graphics. Target locations are recovered using a unique video processor and close-range photogrammetry. It is concluded that such data can be used in such applications as the animation of anthropometric computer models.

ExpertVision - A video-based non-contact system for motion measurement

A system known as ExpertVision for obtaining noncontact kinematic measurements using standard video signals is described. In the system, a video processor extracts edge information from video images using a proprietary thresholding technique. Images can be examined in real time at up to 200 fields/s, and as many as four synchronized inputs can be treated simultaneously by buffering the edge coordinates for each view in dedicated RAM memory. Mechanical applications for ExpertVision include the study of simple impacts, ballistics, wing flutter, the kinematics of helicopter rotor blades, and fluid and gas flow problems.
