4.6 V Moisture‐Tolerant Electrolytes for Lithium‐Ion Batteries

Abstract Commercial LiPF 6 ‐based electrolytes face limitations in oxidation stability (4.2 V) and water tolerance (10 ppm). While replacing LiPF 6 with lithium bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide (LiTFSI) improves water tolerance, it induces Al current collector corrosion above 3.7 V vs. Li/Li + . To address this, lithium cyano(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiCTFSI) is proposed here as a non‐corrosive, moisture‐tolerant alternative. The 2.0 M LiCTFSI/propylene carbonate (PC)‐fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) (7:3 by volume) electrolyte enables LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 (NCM811) cathodes to reach 210 mAh g −1 (2.8‐4.6 V) with a cycle life of 500. Full cells with NCM811||graphite (2.0 mAh cm −2 ) show 77.8% capacity retention after 500 cycles. Even with 2000 ppm moisture in the electrolyte, full cells maintain high cycling stability, reducing the need for costly dry rooms. The electrolyte’s low freezing point and high thermal stability enable the operation from ‐20 °C to 60 °C, delivering 168 mAh g −1 at ‐20 °C and retaining 94% capacity after 100 cycles at 60 °C. In contrast, cells with commercial LiPF 6 electrolyte deliver 71 mAh g −1 at ‐20°C and retain 52.7% after 100 cycles at 60 °C. This novel salt offers a cost‐effective solution for developing robust, high‐performance batteries suitable for extreme conditions.

Single-phase local-high-concentration solid polymer electrolytes for lithium-metal batteries

Solid polymers are promising electrolytes for Li-metal batteries, but they have limitations: they cannot simultaneously achieve high ionic conductivity, good mechanical strength and compatibility with high-voltage cathodes while suppressing Li dendrites. Here, we design a class of locally high-concentration solid polymer electrolytes based on polymer blends, which are termed Li-polymer in F diluter (LPIFD). The Li-polymer (polymer-in-salt) ensures continuous Li-ion conduction channels and contributes to the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), and the F diluter (inert fluorinated polymer) adds mechanical strength. Studies reveal that a single-phase LPIFD, which is based on a miscible polymer blend, lacks phase boundaries and forms an organic-less and LiF-rich SEI, effectively suppressing lithium dendrites. The single-phase LPIFD delivers ionic conductivity of 3.0 x 10 -4 S cm -1 and enables the Li anode to reach a high coulombic efficiency of 99.1% and a critical current density of 3.7 mA cm -2 . Furthermore, the ability to form an F-rich cathode electrolyte interphase allows LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 ||Li cells to achieve a cycle life of 450 cycles at a high operating voltage of 4.5 V. In conclusion, this design will inspire efforts to commercialize polymer electrolytes for high-energy Li-metal batteries.

Interface Design for High‐Performance All‐Solid‐State Lithium Batteries

All‐solid‐state batteries suffer from high interface resistance and lithium dendrite growth leading to low Li plating/stripping Coulombic efficiency (CE) of <90% and low critical current density at high capacity. Here, in this work, both challenges are simultaneously addressed and the Li plating/stripping CE is significantly increased to 99.6% at 0.2 mA cm −2 /0.2 mAh cm −2 , and critical current density (CCD) of > 3.0 mA cm −2 /3.0 mAh cm −2 by inserting a mixed ionic‐electronic conductive (MIEC) and lithiophobic LiF‐C‐Li 3 N‐Bi nanocomposite interlayer between Li 6 PS 5 Cl electrolyte and Li anode. The highly lithiophobic LiF‐C‐Li 3 N‐Bi interlayer with high ionic conductivity (10 −5 S cm −1 ) and low electronic conductivity (3.4×10 −7 S cm −1 ) enables Li to plate on the current collector (CC) surface rather than on Li 6 PS 5 Cl surface avoiding Li 6 PS 5 Cl electrolyte reduction. During initial Li plating on CC, Li penetrates into porous LiF‐C‐Li 3 N‐Bi interlayer and lithiates Bi nanoparticles into Li 3 Bi. The lithiophilic Li 3 Bi and Li 3 N nanoparticles in LiF‐C‐Li 3 N‐Li 3 Bi sub‐interlayer will move to CC along with plated Li, forming LiF‐C/Li 3 N‐Li 3 Bi lithiophobic/lithiophilic sublayer during the following Li stripping. This interlayer enables Co 0.1 Fe 0.9 S 2 /Li 6 PS 5 Cl/Li cell with an areal capacity of 1.4 mAh cm −2 to achieve a cycle life of >850 cycles at 150 mA g −1 . The lithiophobic/lithiophilic interlayer enables solid‐state metal batteries to simultaneously achieve high energy and long cycle life.
