Anomaly Detection in Connected and Autonomous Vehicle Trajectories Using LSTM Autoencoder and Gaussian Mixture Model

Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) technology has the potential to transform the transportation system. Although these new technologies have many advantages, the implementation raises significant concerns regarding safety, security, and privacy. Anomalies in sensor data caused by errors or cyberattacks can cause severe accidents. To address the issue, this study proposed an innovative anomaly detection algorithm, namely the LSTM Autoencoder with Gaussian Mixture Model (LAGMM). This model supports anomalous CAV trajectory detection in the real-time leveraging communication capabilities of CAV sensors. The LSTM Autoencoder is applied to generate low-rank representations and reconstruct errors for each input data point, while the Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) is employed for its strength in density estimation. The proposed model was jointly optimized for the LSTM Autoencoder and GMM simultaneously. The study utilizes realistic CAV data from a platooning experiment conducted for Cooperative Automated Research Mobility Applications (CARMAs). The experiment findings indicate that the proposed LAGMM approach enhances detection accuracy by 3% and precision by 6.4% compared to the existing state-of-the-art methods, suggesting a significant improvement in the field.

Deployment priority of public charging speeds for increasing battery electric vehicle usability

To inform charger deployment decisions, this paper aims to understand the potential utilization and deployment priority for public charging infrastructure. A data-driven Cumulative Public Recharging (CPR) model is developed to explore the travel patterns by using 2017 National Household Travel Survey data. Given the daily trip sequence, trip distance, and dwell times, the study examines the daily expected driving range and BEV feasibility under different charging speeds, battery capacity, and charging behaviors. The results suggest that more advanced public chargers increase the daily expected driving range. Home charging is sufficient for most daily short-distance trips while public chargers are still needed for medium- and long-distance trips. Extreme fast charging (xFC) may not be necessary for people with home charging but could be more useful for people without home charging and for urgent charging. In conclusion, xFC becomes even less important to drivers with longer BEV ranges, a finding that contradicts conventional thinking.

Network-Level Traffic Signal Cooperation: A Higher-Order Conflict Graph Approach

Traffic signal control and cooperation are extremely important to alleviate traffic congestion in a large traffic network. This study develops a higher-order conflict graph approach for network-wide traffic signal control and cooperation. A conflict graph is applied to model the traffic signal configurations, which identifies the conflict and unconflicted movements for each intersection. In conflict graph, the node represents each movement. The weight of each node can be defined as traffic volume, queue length, fuel consumption, or any weighted combinations of these measurements. The calculation of the optimal green light duration and green light sequence (for different movements) is equivalent to sequentially finding the maximum weight independent set (MWIS) in the conflict graph. The conflict graph also provides a uniform and efficient way to connect traffic signal operations among nearby intersections spatially. Then, we introduced the concept of the k -th order neighborhood to model the degree of connectivity between each movement to the movements at upstream or downstream intersections. The weight of each node in the higher-order conflict graph not only represents its own congestion level, but also relates to the traffic conditions of nearby intersections. Through this approach, the cooperation of multiple intersections can be realized by incorporating their spatial connectivity into conflict graph and solving the MWIS problem. A simulation network is built in SUMO to test the effectiveness of the proposed method. Results suggested that the proposed model outperformed other state-of-the-art signal control methods. Also, the scheme maintains good performance under varying traffic demands.

High-energy and low-cost membrane-free chlorine flow battery

Abstract Grid-scale energy storage is essential for reliable electricity transmission and renewable energy integration. Redox flow batteries (RFB) provide affordable and scalable solutions for stationary energy storage. However, most of the current RFB chemistries are based on expensive transition metal ions or synthetic organics. Here, we report a reversible chlorine redox flow battery starting from the electrolysis of aqueous NaCl electrolyte and the as-produced Cl 2 is extracted and stored in the carbon tetrachloride (CCl 4 ) or mineral spirit flow. The immiscibility between the CCl 4 or mineral spirit and NaCl electrolyte enables a membrane-free design with an energy efficiency of >91% at 10 mA/cm 2 and an energy density of 125.7 Wh/L. The chlorine flow battery can meet the stringent price and reliability target for stationary energy storage with the inherently low-cost active materials (~$5/kWh) and the highly reversible Cl 2 /Cl − redox reaction.

POINT: Partially Observable Imitation Network for Traffic Signal Control

Smart traffic signals bring together transportation infrastructure and advance technologies to improve the mobility and efficiency of urban transportation network. Adaptive traffic signal control studies can be categorized into modeling-based approaches and learning-based approaches. In order to take advantages of these two systems, this study developed an offline-online combined Partial Observable Imitation Network for Traffic signal control (POINT). In the offline system, the traffic signal timing optimization problem was formulated as a Mixed Integer Nonlinear Programming (MINLP) given complete traffic information, i.e., second-by-second speeds and locations of all vehicles. Furthermore, the objective of MINLP is to minimize total travel delays considering individual vehicle trajectories under Connected Vehicle (CV) environment. The calculated optimal solutions under various traffic conditions were considered as the ”expert” decisions. In the online system, an imitation neural network model was developed to learn the ”expert” signal plans generated from offline system. Given partial observable traffic conditions in real time, e.g., the aggregate-level of traffic volume, the POINT model can compute the signal timing parameters in the online system. The numerical results demonstrated that the proposed method outperformed other state-of-the-art signal control method under high and unbalanced traffic demand levels in terms of reducing travel delays and queue length.

Interactive Visual Study of Multiple Attributes Learning Model of X-Ray Scattering Images

Existing interactive visualization tools for deep learning are mostly applied to the training, debugging, and refinement of neural network models working on natural images. However, visual analytics tools are lacking for the specific application of x-ray image classification with multiple structural attributes. In this paper, we present an interactive system for domain scientists to visually study the multiple attributes learning models applied to x-ray scattering images. It allows domain scientists to interactively explore this important type of scientific images in embedded spaces that are defined on the model prediction output, the actual labels, and the discovered feature space of neural networks. Users are allowed to flexibly select instance images, their clusters, and compare them regarding the specified visual representation of attributes. The exploration is guided by the manifestation of model performance related to mutual relationships among attributes, which often affect the learning accuracy and effectiveness. The system thus supports domain scientists to improve the training dataset and model, find questionable attributes labels, and identify outlier images or spurious data clusters. Case studies and scientists feedback demonstrate its functionalities and usefulness.
