Crystallization of the P 3 Sn 4 Phase upon Cooling P 2 Sn 5 Liquid by Molecular Dynamics Simulation Using a Machine Learning Interatomic Potential

We performed molecular dynamics simulations to study the crystallization of the P3Sn4 phase from P 2 Sn 5 liquid using a machine learning (ML) interatomic potential with desirable efficiency and accuracy. Our results capture the liquid properties of P 2 Sn 5 at 1300 K, which is well above the melting temperature. The phase separation and crystallization are observed when P 2 Sn 5 liquid is cooled down below 832 and 505 K, respectively. The simulation results are in good agreement with the experimentally observed phase transformation behaviors and provide useful insights into the complex nucleation and crystallization process at the details of atomistic scale. Our work also demonstrated that ML interatomic potentials based on neural network deep learning are robust and capable of accurately describing the energetics and kinetics of complex materials through molecular dynamics simulations.

Shallow-circuit variational quantum eigensolver based on symmetry-inspired Hilbert space partitioning for quantum chemical calculations

Development of resource-friendly quantum algorithms remains highly desirable for noisy intermediate-scale quantum computing. Based on the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) with unitary coupled-cluster Ansatz, we demonstrate that partitioning of the Hilbert space made possible by the point-group symmetry of the molecular systems greatly reduces the number of variational operators by confining the variational search within a subspace. In addition, we found that instead of including all subterms for each excitation operator, a single-term representation suffices to reach required accuracy for various molecules tested, resulting in an additional shortening of the quantum circuit by a factor of 4–8. With these strategies, VQE calculations on a noise-free quantum simulator achieve energies within a few meVs of those obtained with the full unitary coupled-cluster Ansatz with single and double excitations for the H 4 -square, H 4 -chain, and H 6 -hexagon molecules, while the number of cnot gates, a measure of the quantum-circuit depth, is reduced by a factor of as large as 35. Furthermore, we introduced an efficient “score” parameter to rank the excitation operators, so that the operators causing larger energy reduction can be applied first. Using the H 4 square and H 4 chain as examples, We demonstrated on noisy quantum simulators that the first few variational operators can bring the energy within the chemical accuracy, while additional operators do not improve the energy since the accumulative noise outweighs the gain from the expansion of the variational Ansatz.

Encapsulation of metal nanoparticles at the surface of a prototypical layered material

Encapsulation of metal nanoparticles just below the surface of a prototypical layered material, graphite, is a recently discovered phenomenon. These encapsulation architectures have potential for tuning the properties of two-dimensional or layered materials, and additional applications might exploit the properties of the encapsulated metal nanoclusters themselves. The encapsulation process produces novel surface nanostructures and can be achieved for a variety of metals. Because these studies of near-surface intercalation are in their infancy, these systems provide a rich area for future studies. This Review presents the current progress on the encapsulation, including experimental strategies and characterization, as well as theoretical understanding which leads to the development of predictive capability. The Review closes with future opportunities where further understanding of the encapsulation is desired to exploit its applications.

Electronic Structure of Double-Layer Epitaxial Graphene on SiC(0001) Modified by Gd Intercalation

In this work, we systematically study the effects of Gd adsorption and intercalation on the electronic band structure of double-layer epitaxial graphene on Si-terminated SiC(0001) by first-principles calculations. We show that Gd adsorption and intercalation exhibit strong effects on the coupling between the graphene layers and between the buffer layer and substrate. Different adsorption/intercalation geometries can result in very different electron band structures. The number of Dirac cones and the positions of the Dirac cones relative to the Fermi level can be effectively manipulated through controlling the Gd adsorption/intercalation geometries. Our calculations provide useful insights to guide the experimental design of graphene-based materials with desirable functionalities for applications.

Correlation matrix renormalization theory in multi-band lattice systems

An appropriate treatment of electronic correlation effects plays an important role in accurate descriptions of physical and chemical properties of real materials. The recently proposed correlation matrix renormalization theory with sum rule correction (CMR) for studying correlated-electron materials has shown good performance in molecular systems and a periodic hydrogen chain in comparison with various quantum chemistry and quantum Monte Carlo calculations. Additionally, this work gives a detailed formulation and computational code implementation of CMR in multi-band periodic lattice systems. This lattice CMR ab initio theory is highly efficient, has no material specific adjustable parameters, and has no double counting issues faced by the hybrid approaches like LDA + U, DFT + DMFT and DFT + GA type theories. Benchmark studies on materials with s and p orbitals in this study show that CMR in its current implementation consistently performs well for these systems as the electron correlation increases from the bonding region to the bond breaking region.

Dynamic Observation of Dendritic Quasicrystal Growth upon Laser-Induced Solid-State Transformation

In this paper, we report the laser-induced solid-state transformation between a periodic “approximant” and quasicrystal in the Al-Cr system during rapid quenching. Dynamic transmission electron microscopy allows us to capture in situ the dendritic growth of the metastable quasicrystals. The formation of dendrites during solid-state transformation is a rare phenomenon, which we attribute to the structural similarity between the two intermetallics. Through ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, we identify the dominant structural motif to be a 13-atom icosahedral cluster transcending the phases of matter.

Spatial decomposition of magnetic anisotropy in magnets: Application to doped Fe 16 N 2

We propose a scheme of decomposition of the total relativistic energy in solids to intra- and interatomic contributions. The method is based on a site variation of such fundamental constant as the speed of light. As a practical illustration of the method, we tested such decomposition in the case of a spin-orbit interaction variation for the decomposition of the magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) in CoPt. We further studied the α" - Fe 16 N 2 magnet doped by Bi, Sb, Co, and Pt atoms. It was found that the addition of Pt atoms can enhance the MAE by as much as five times while Bi and Sb substitutions double the total MAE. Using the proposed technique, we demonstrate the spatial distribution of these enhancements. Our studies also suggest that Sb, Pt, and Co substitutions could be synthesized by experiments.

Efficient Step-Merged Quantum Imaginary Time Evolution Algorithm for Quantum Chemistry

In this work, we develop a resource-efficient step-merged quantum imaginary time evolution approach (smQITE) to solve for the ground state of a Hamiltonian on quantum computers. This heuristic method features a fixed shallow quantum circuit depth along the state evolution path. We use this algorithm to determine the binding energy curves of a set of molecules, including H 2 , H 4 , H 6 , LiH, HF, H 2 O, and BeH 2 , and find highly accurate results. The required quantum resources of smQITE calculations can be further reduced by adopting the circuit form of the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) technique, such as the unitary coupled cluster ansatz. We demonstrate that smQITE achieves a similar computational accuracy as VQE at the same fixed-circuit ansatz, without requiring a generally complicated high-dimensional nonconvex optimization. Finally, smQITE calculations are carried out on Rigetti quantum processing units, demonstrating that the approach is readily applicable on current noisy intermediate-scale quantum devices.

An efficient random-sampling method for calculating double occupancy of Gutzwiller wave function in single-band 1D and 2D lattices

In this paper, we report a random sampling method for computing the expectation value of physical quantities based on the Gutzwiler variational wave function. As the first application, we calculated the double occupancy, which is a critical quantity for under- standing the correlation effects in many-body systems, for single-band 1D and 2D lattices. We demonstrated that the random sampling scheme is more efficient than an existing Metropolis Monte-Carlo algorithm. For the 1D Hubbard model with only nearest-neighbor hopping, our results are almost identical to the exact analytic solution. We have also studied systems to which analytic solutions are not available, including the 1D lattices with next-nearest-neighbor hopping and 2D lattices. In addition, constraints on real-space con gurations can be easily implemented in the current scheme to further improve the Gutzwiller wave function. As an example, we calculated the double occupancy for 1D Hubbard model by applying the constraint that all double-occupied sites are paired with an empty site. With enhanced correlation between double-occupied and empty sites, the constraint results in much improved ground-state energy for 1D Hubbard model with strong on-site repulsion.

An ultra-incompressible Mn3N compound predicted by first-principles genetic algorithm

Using genetic algorithms for an unbiased structure search and first-principles total-energy calculations, a stable manganese nitride, Mn3N, is discovered. Mn3N is a nonmagnetic metal and isostructural to superhard Re3N. Mn3N exhibits a large bulk modulus and incompressibility comparable to that of the ultra-incompressible OsB. We show that the large bulk modulus can be attributed to the strong covalent bonding in this system. Phonon calculations and analysis confirm the dynamical stability of the Mn3N compound. We also show that weak electron–phonon coupling leads to a small superconducting transition temperature for Mn3N.

Ground state wave functions for single-band Hubbard models from the Gutzwiller conjugate gradient minimisation theory

The Gutzwiller conjugate gradient minimisation (GCGM) theory is an ab initio quantum many-body theory for computing the ground-state properties of infinite systems. Previous applications of GCGM provides satisfying accuracy of ground-state energy of Hubbard models. In the current work, we address the problem of whether the obtained wave function is a good approximation for the true ground state by comparing the correlation functions with the benchmark data. Additionally, our results confirms the accuracy of the reproduced ground state of the regular Hubbard model, but with some exception for the frustrated Hubbard model.

Unveiling the medium-range order in glass models and its role in glass formation

The correlation between structure and glass formability in glassy systems is a long-standing puzzle. To solve this puzzle, many descriptors based on the short-range order (SRO) have been proposed. In this paper we show that the SRO, however, offers little help in explaining the glass formability and stability; instead it is the formation of medium-range order that stabilizes the glass against crystallization by suppressing the atomic rearrangement and compositional change. Our results provide a perspective for understanding the correlation between structure and stability in glasses.

Stabilizing the crystal structures of NaFePO 4 with Li substitutions

Due to the high cost and insufficient resources of lithium, alternative sodium-ion batteries have been widely investigated for large-scale applications. NaFePO 4 has the highest theoretical capacity of 154 mA h g -1 among the iron-based phosphates, which makes it an attractive cathode material for Na-ion batteries. Experimentally, LiFePO 4 has been highly successful as a cathode material in Li-ion batteries because its olivine crystal structure provides a stable framework during battery cycling. In NaFePO 4 , maricite replaces olivine as the most stable phase. However, the maricite phase is experimentally found to be electrochemically inactive under normal battery operating voltages (0–4.5 V). We found that partial substitutions of Na with Li stabilize the olivine structure and may be a way to improve the performance of NaFePO 4 cathodes. Using the previously developed structural LiFePO 4 database, here we examine the low-energy crystal structures in the system when we replace Li with Na. The known maricite and olivine NaFePO 4 phases are reconfirmed and an unreported phase with energy between them is identified by our calculations. Besides, the Li-doped olivine type compound Li x Na 1- x FePO 4 with mixed alkali ions retains better energetic stability compared with the other two types of structures of the same composition, as long as the proportion of Li exceeds 0.25. The thermodynamic stability of o-type Li x Na 1- x FePO 4 can be further improved at finite temperatures. The primary limitation of the calculations is that we mainly focus on the zero-temperature condition; however, the relative stability of the structures may vary depending on the ambient temperature.

A benchmark of Gutzwiller conjugate gradient minimization method in ground state energy calculations of dimers

Herein we present numerical results of ground-state energies of 9 molecules in the well-established G2 molecule set given by the Gutzwiller conjugate gradient minimization (GCGM) method. The method, beyond the commonly used Gutzwiller approximation, was recently developed based on Gutzwiller variational wave functions. We find that compared to benchmark data given by full configuration interaction, GCGM total energies are reasonably well reproduced with the minimum basis set. To include the dynamical correlation beyond the minimal basis calculations, we adopt the local density approximation for the dynamical correlation energy $E_c$. By comparing the results with benchmark data given by experiments and large-basis configuration interaction, the GCGM total energies with $E_c$ are in general better reproduced, but discrepancies are still observed for some dimers.

Phase Diagram and Structure Map of Binary Nanoparticle Superlattices from a Lennard-Jones Model

A first-principles prediction of the binary nanoparticle phase diagram assembled by solvent evaporation has eluded theoretical approaches. In this paper, we show that a binary system interacting through the Lennard-Jones (LJ) potential contains all experimental phases in which nanoparticles are effectively described as quasi hard spheres. We report a phase diagram consisting of 53 equilibrium phases, whose stability is quite insensitive to the microscopic details of the potentials, thus giving rise to some type of universality. Furthermore, we show that binary lattices may be understood as consisting of certain particle clusters, i.e., motifs, that provide a generalization of the four conventional Frank–Kasper polyhedral units. Our results show that metastable phases share the very same motifs as equilibrium phases. Finally, we discuss the connection with packing models, phase diagrams with repulsive potentials, and the prediction of likely experimental superlattices.

Ground-state properties of the Hubbard model in one and two dimensions from the Gutzwiller conjugate gradient minimization theory

We introduce Gutzwiller conjugate gradient minimization (GCGM) theory, an ab initio quantum many-body theory for computing the ground-state properties of infinite systems. GCGM uses the Gutzwiller wave function but does not use the commonly adopted Gutzwiller approximation (GA), which is a major source of inaccuracy. Instead, the theory uses an approximation that is based on the occupation probability of the on-site configurations, rather than approximations that decouple the site-site correlations as used in the GA. We test the theory in the one-dimensional and two-dimensional Hubbard models at various electron densities and find that GCGM reproduces energies and double occupancies in reasonable agreement with benchmark data at a very small computational cost.

Origin of short- and medium-range order in supercooled liquid Ge 3 Sb 2 Te 6 from ab initio molecular dynamics simulations

Phase-change materials such as Ge–Sb–Te compounds have attracted much attention due to their potential value in electrical data storage. In contrast to the amorphous and crystalline phases, supercooled liquids are far from being deeply understood despite their inevitable role in both amorphization and crystallization processes. To this end, we have studied the dynamics properties and structural characteristics of liquid and supercooled liquid Ge 3 Sb 2 Te 6 during the fast cooling process. As the temperature decreases, chemical bonds become more homogeneous, but coordination numbers of Ge, Sb and Te atoms change very little. Meanwhile, the structural order of short-range configuration is obviously enhanced. Further studies suggest that Ge-centered, Sb-centered and Te-centered configurations change to the more ordered defective octahedrons mainly by adjusting the bond-angle relationship and bond length, rather than just by changing the coordination environment. It is the more ordered octahedrons that promote the formation of medium-range order. Our findings provide a deep insight into the origin of local structural order in supercooled liquid Ge 3 Sb 2 Te 6 , which is of great importance for the comprehensive understanding of amorphization and crystallization processes.
