Decoupling Complex Multi–Length–Scale Morphology in Non–Fullerene Photovoltaics with Nitrogen K–Edge Resonant Soft X–ray Scattering

Complex morphology in organic photovoltaics (OPVs) and other functional soft materials commonly dictates performance. Such complexity in OPVs originates from the mesoscale kinetically trapped non-equilibrium state, which governs device charge generation and transport. Resonant soft X-ray scattering (RSoXS) has been revolutionary in the exploration of OPV morphology in the past decade due to its chemical and orientation sensitivity. However, for non-fullerene OPVs, RSoXS analysis near the carbon K-edge is challenging, due to the chemical similarity of the materials used in active layers. Here, an innovative approach is provided by nitrogen K-edge RSoXS (NK-RSoXS), utilizing the spatial and orientational contrasts from the cyano groups in the acceptor materials, which allows for determination of phase separation. NK-RSoXS clearly visualizes the combined feature sizes in PM6:Y6 blends from crystallization and liquid-liquid demixing, while PM6:Y6:Y6-BO ternary blends with reduced phase-separation size and enhanced material crystallization can lead to current amplification in devices. Nitrogen is common in organic semiconductors and other soft materials, and the strong and directional N 1s → π* resonances make NK-RSoXS a powerful tool to uncover the mesoscale complexity and open opportunities to understand heterogeneous systems.

Segmented Energy Routing for a Modular AC/DC Hybrid System

This article presents a modular ac/dc system with both distributed and centralized power ports for energy router (ER) applications. In each module of the described system, photovoltaic (PV) power generation units, battery-type energy storage (ES) units, and critical loads are connected to the cascaded H-bridge (CHB)-organized medium-voltage (MV) dc links, with fully distributed low-voltage (LV) dc power ports. Copies of modules share the centralized load bus and interact with an MV ac grid in parallel. Hybrid power port (HPO) assigns flexibility to the system but makes energy routings a necessity for stable operation. In this article, a segmented energy management strategy for the HPO-ER is proposed. In terms of the grid-side power transferring, the system ratings are intentionally designed to match significant power imbalance. Focally, a segmented energy management strategy is proposed to realize fully autonomous energy routing involving MV ac grid, distributed PV generations, distributed battery storages, and LV load. The system is proven to be stable using the derived impedance-based model considering the interaction between power blocks. The feasibility of the topology and control strategy is also verified through software simulation, laboratorial hardware prototype experiment, and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) emulation.

Photonic Bandgap in Achiral Liquid Crystals—A Twist on a Twist

Abstract Achiral mesogenic molecules are shown to be able to spontaneously assemble into liquid crystalline smectic phases having either simple or double‐helical structures. At the transition between these phases, the double‐helical structure unwinds. As a consequence, in some temperature range, the pitch of the helix becomes comparable to the wavelength of visible light and the selective reflection of light in the visible range is observed. The photonic bandgap phenomenon is reported for achiral liquid crystals.

Diversifying Composition Leads to Hierarchical Composites with Design Flexibility and Structural Fidelity

Although significant progress has been made in the self-assembly of nanostructures, present successes heavily rely on precision in building block design, composition, and pair interactions. These requirements fundamentally limit our ability to synthesize macroscopic materials where the likelihood of impurity inclusion escalates and, more importantly, to access molecular-to-nanoscopic-to-microscopic-to-macroscopic hierarchies, since the types and compositions of building blocks vary at each stage. Inspired by biological blends and high-entropy alloys, we hypothesize that diversifying the blend’s composition can overcome these limitations. Increasing the number of components increases mixing entropy, leading to the dispersion of different components and, as a result, enhances interphase miscibility, weakens the dependence on specific pair interactions, and enables long-range cooperativity. This hypothesis is validated in complex blends containing small molecules, block copolymer-based supramolecules, and nanoparticles/colloidal particles. Hierarchically structured composites can be obtained with formulation flexibility in the filler selection and blend composition. It is worth noting that, by adding small molecules, we can solve the size constraint that plagues traditional block copolymer/nanoparticle blends. Detailed characterization and simulation further confirm that each component is distributed to locally mediate unfavorable interactions, cooperatively mitigate composition fluctuations, and retain structural fidelity. Furthermore, the blends have sufficient mobility to access tunable microstructures without compromising the order of the nanostructure. Besides establishing a kinetically viable pathway to release current constraints in the composite design and to navigate uncertainties during structure formation over multiple length scales, the present study demonstrates that entropy-driven behaviors can be realized in systems beyond high-entropy alloys despite inherent differences between metal alloys and organic/inorganic hybrids.

Label-free characterization of organic nanocarriers reveals persistent single molecule cores for hydrocarbon sequestration

Self-assembled molecular nanostructures embody an enormous potential for new technologies, therapeutics, and understanding of molecular biofunctions. Their structure and function are dependent on local environments, necessitating in-situ/operando investigations for the biggest leaps in discovery and design. However, the most advanced of such investigations involve laborious labeling methods that can disrupt behavior or are not fast enough to capture stimuli-responsive phenomena. We utilize X-rays resonant with molecular bonds to demonstrate an in-situ nanoprobe that eliminates the need for labels and enables data collection times within seconds. Our analytical spectral model quantifies the structure, molecular composition, and dynamics of a copolymer micelle drug delivery platform using resonant soft X-rays. We additionally apply this technique to a hydrocarbon sequestrating polysoap micelle and discover that the critical organic-capturing domain does not coalesce upon aggregation but retains distinct single-molecule cores. This characteristic promotes its efficiency of hydrocarbon sequestration for applications like oil spill remediation and drug delivery. Such a technique enables operando, chemically sensitive investigations of any aqueous molecular nanostructure, label-free.

Molecular Origin of Strain-Induced Chain Alignment in PDPP-Based Semiconducting Polymeric Thin Films

Donor–acceptor (D–A) type semiconducting polymers have shown great potential for the application of deformable and stretchable electronics in recent decades. However, due to their heterogeneous structure with rigid backbones and long solubilizing side chains, the fundamental understanding of their molecular picture upon mechanical deformation still lacks investigation. Here, the molecular orientation of diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-based D–A polymer thin films is probed under tensile deformation via both experimental measurements and molecular modeling. The detailed morphological analysis demonstrates highly aligned polymer crystallites upon deformation, while the degree of backbone alignment is limited within the crystalline domain. Besides, the aromatic ring on polymer backbones rotates parallel to the strain direction despite the relatively low overall chain anisotropy. Additionally, the effect of side-chain length on the DPP chain alignment is observed to be less noticeable. These observations are distinct from traditional linear-chain semicrystalline polymers like polyethylene due to distinct characteristics of backbone/side-chain combination and the crystallographic characteristics in DPP polymers. Furthermore, a stable and isotropic charge carrier mobility is obtained from fabricated organic field-effect transistors. This study deconvolutes the alignment of different components within the thin-film microstructure and highlights that crystallite rotation and chain slippage are the primary deformation mechanisms for semiconducting polymers.

Efficient, Thermally Stable, and Mechanically Robust All-Polymer Solar Cells Consisting of the Same Benzodithiophene Unit-Based Polymer Acceptor and Donor with High Molecular Compatibility

All-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) are a highly attractive class of photovoltaics for wearable and portable electronics due to their excellent morphological and mechanical stabilities. Recently, new types of polymer acceptors (P A s) consisting of non-fullerene small molecule acceptors (NFSMAs) with strong light absorption have been proposed to enhance the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of all-PSCs. However, polymerization of NFSMAs often reduces entropy of mixing in PSC blends and prevents the formation of intermixed blend domains required for efficient charge generation and morphological stability. One approach to increase compatibility in these systems is to design P A s that contain the same building blocks as their polymer donor (P D ) counterparts. Here, a series of NFSMA-based P A s [P(BDT2BOY5-X), (X = H, F, Cl)] are reported, by copolymerizing NFSMA (Y5-2BO) with benzodithiophene (BDT), a common donating unit in high-performance P D s such as PBDB-T. All-PSC blends composed of PBDB-T PD and P(BDT2BOY5-X) P A show enhanced molecular compatibility, resulting in excellent morphological and electronic properties. Specifically, PBDB-T:P(BDT2BOY5-Cl) all-PSC has a PCE of 11.12%, which is significantly higher than previous PBDB-T:Y5-2BO (7.02%) and PBDB-T:P(NDI2OD-T2) (6.00%) PSCs. Additionally, the increased compatibility of these all-PSCs greatly improves their thermal stability and mechanical robustness. For example, the crack onset strain (COS) and toughness of the PBDB-T:P(BDT2BOY5-Cl) blend are 15.9% and 3.24 MJ m -3 , respectively, in comparison to the PBDB-T:Y5-2BO blends at 2.21% and 0.32 MJ m -3 .

Natural optical activity as the origin of the large chiroptical properties in π-conjugated polymer thin films

Polymer thin films that emit and absorb circularly polarised light have been demonstrated with the promise of achieving important technological advances; from efficient, high-performance displays, to 3D imaging and all-organic spintronic devices. However, the origin of the large chiroptical effects in such films has, until now, remained elusive. We investigate the emergence of such phenomena in achiral polymers blended with a chiral small-molecule additive (1-aza[6]helicene) and intrinsically chiral-sidechain polymers using a combination of spectroscopic methods and structural probes. We show that – under conditions relevant for device fabrication – the large chiroptical effects are caused by magneto-electric coupling (natural optical activity), not structural chirality as previously assumed, and may occur because of local order in a cylinder blue phase-type organisation. This disruptive mechanistic insight into chiral polymer thin films will offer new approaches towards chiroptical materials development after almost three decades of research in this area.

Exploiting ultra-large linear elasticity over a wide temperature range in nanocrystalline NiTi alloy

Many shape memory alloys can support large recoverable strains of a few percent by reversible stress-induced martensite transformation, yet they behave non-linear within a narrow operating temperature range. Developing the bulk metallic materials with ultra-large linear elasticity over a wide temperature range has proven to be difficult. In this work, a material design concept was proposed, that is true elastic deformation and reversible twinning-detwinning deformation run in parallel to overcome this challenge. By engineering the residual internal stress to realize the concurrency of true elastic deformation and twinning-detwinning deformation, a bulk nanocrystalline NiTi that possesses an ultra-large linear elastic strain up to 5.1 % and a high yield stress of 2.16 GPa over a wide temperature range of 270 °C was developed. This study offers a new avenue for developing the metallic materials with ultra-large linear elasticity over a wide temperature range of 270 °C (from 70 °C to -197 °C).

Universal and versatile morphology engineering via hot fluorous solvent soaking for organic bulk heterojunction

After explosive growth of efficiency in organic solar cells (OSCs), achieving ideal morphology of bulk heterojunction remains crucial and challenging for advancing OSCs into consumer market. Herein, by utilizing the amphiphobic nature and temperature-dependent miscibility of fluorous solvent, hot fluorous solvent soaking method is developed to optimize the morphology with various donor/acceptor combinations including polymer/small-molecule, all-polymer and all-small-molecule systems. By immersing blend film into hot fluorous solvent which is utilized as liquid medium with better thermal conductivity, the molecular reorganization is accelerated. Furthermore, fluorous solvent can be miscible with the residue of chloroform and chloronaphthalene above upper critical solution temperature. This mixed solvent diffuses around inside the active layer and selectively promotes molecular reorganization, leading to optimized morphology. Compared to widely-used thermal annealing, this approach processed under mild conditions achieves superior photovoltaic performance, indicating the practicality and universality for morphological optimization in OSCs as well as other optoelectronic devices.
