Silicone-Rubber Stitching Seal

Fabric products protected from raveling by coating threads and filling stitching holes with silicone rubber. Uncored silicone rubber applied to stitching lines with air-pressurized sealant gun. Next, plastic release film placed on coated side, and blanket flipped over so release film lies underneath. Blanket then bagged and adhesive cured under partial vacuum of about 3.5 psi or under pressure. Applications include balloons, parachutes, ultralight aircraft, sails, rescue harnesses, tents, or other fabric products highly stressed in use.

Fitting Flexible Coverings to Contoured Surfaces

Method using two transparent plastic sheets and polyethylene foam spacer produces flat templates from contoured surfaces. Once prepared, templates laid flat, and insulation inserted between two templates cut to shape to fit contoured surface. Sections of insulation prepared by contour-transferring technique fit contoured surfaces precisely. Procedure used for tailoring protective covers or for installation of vibrationabsorbing material over contoured surfaces.

High Temperature Filler for Tile Gaps

Gaps between ceramic tiles filled with ceramic-coated fabric that withstands temperatures as high as 2,000 degrees F (1,300 degrees C). Reusable high-temperature gap filler is made of fabric coated with ceramic slurry and bonded in place with room-temperature-vulcanized adhesive. Procedure used in kilns and furnaces.

Installing fiber insulation

A method for installing fragile, high temperature insulation batting in an elongated cavity or in a resilient wire sleeve to form a resilient seal. The batting is preformed to rough dimensions and wrapped in a plastic film, the film being of a material which is fugitive at a high temperature. The film is heat sealed and trimmed to form a snugly fit skin which overlaps at least at one end to permit attachment of a pull cord. The film absorbs the tensile force of pulling the film enclosed batting through the cavity or wire mesh sleeve and is subsequently driven off by high temperature baking, leaving only the insulation in the cavity or wire mesh sleeve.

Applying uniform adhesive coatings

Removable overlay keeps thickness variations small, saving material and application time. In comparative tests against roller, brush, and spray application, thickness variations in the conventional techniques were at least three times greater.

Installing fiber insulation in tight spaces

Two techniques using organic resin binders or thin clear-burning plastic film have been successfully used to simplify, and facilitate handling of aluminum/zirconia fiber batting as insulation material for high temperature seals.

Match-mold process for foam insulation

Process, using fast-setting putty-type thixotropic epoxy material, eliminates need for leakproof enclosures. Method reduces cure time from 15 to 4 hours. Epoxy masters are stronger and do not require special coating for storage. Manufacturers of form-fitted insulation or packaging forms will find this process to be of interest.

Void-free foam insulation

Sectional casting method uses blocking piece for first pour, which limits pour height to 12 inches.
