Fast-Charging Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 Anode Driven by Light

Lithium-ion batteries with fast charging capabilities are crucial for widespread adoption of electric vehicles, as they will increase acceptance of the technology and reduce range anxiety for drivers. To achieve this, advanced fast charging technologies and alternative methods to enhance the slow electrochemical processes are desperately required. This study applied light-emitting diode (LED) photo-assisted fast charging to Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 (LTO), a large bandgap cubic spinel material, to enhance charging speed through electronic-structure coupling. UV LED-generated light irradiation on to the electrode interface boosted the ion diffusion and lithium cation addition by a factor of 1.3 during electrochemical lithiation, resulting in a 30% decrease in charging time under ambient conditions. Red LED light was not effective in accelerating the reaction as it does not provide sufficient energy. The first-principles calculations support the concept that UV illumination generates charges by overcoming the material’s bandgap and effectively reducing it through the introduction of additional titanium defect states.

High‐Performance Ternary Organic Solar Cells with Enhanced Luminescence Efficiency and Miscibility Enabled by Two Compatible Acceptors

Abstract The ternary strategy has proven to be an effective method for improving the efficiency of organic solar cells (OSCs). However, designing and selecting the third component still pose challenges. In this study, this issue is addressed by focusing on the PBDB‐T:Y18‐F binary system and introducing a new, strong luminescent, asymmetric small‐molecule acceptor (SMA) called L8‐CBIC‐Cl, which shares a similar skeleton with Y18‐F. The similarity in molecular framework facilitates good compatibility between the two acceptors, resulting in the formation of an alloy‐like acceptor phase. Furthermore, the norbornenyl‐modified end group in L8‐CBIC‐Cl contributes to its strong luminescent properties, which in turn leads to a low non‐radiative energy loss and a high open‐circuit voltage. Consequently, the PBDB‐T:L8‐CBIC‐Cl:Y18‐F based ternary devices realize a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) up to 17.01%, which is higher than PBDB‐T:Y18‐F device (14.49%). Importantly, L8‐CBIC‐Cl exhibits a good universality as a guest acceptor in other three binary systems (D18:Y6, D18:BTP‐eC9‐4F, and D18:L8‐BO). The D18:L8‐BO:L8‐CBIC‐Cl device shows an impressive efficiency of 19%. The work demonstrates that employing SMA with a high PLQY and better miscibility with host acceptor as the third component has a great potential for developing high‐efficiency ternary OSCs.

2023 roadmap for potassium-ion batteries

Abstract The heavy reliance of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has caused rising concerns on the sustainability of lithium and transition metal and the ethic issue around mining practice. Developing alternative energy storage technologies beyond lithium has become a prominent slice of global energy research portfolio. The alternative technologies play a vital role in shaping the future landscape of energy storage, from electrified mobility to the efficient utilization of renewable energies and further to large-scale stationary energy storage. Potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) are a promising alternative given its chemical and economic benefits, making a strong competitor to LIBs and sodium-ion batteries for different applications. However, many are unknown regarding potassium storage processes in materials and how it differs from lithium and sodium and understanding of solid–liquid interfacial chemistry is massively insufficient in PIBs. Therefore, there remain outstanding issues to advance the commercial prospects of the PIB technology. This Roadmap highlights the up-to-date scientific and technological advances and the insights into solving challenging issues to accelerate the development of PIBs. We hope this Roadmap aids the wider PIB research community and provides a cross-referencing to other beyond lithium energy storage technologies in the fast-pacing research landscape.

Correlating wavelength dependence in LiMn2O4 cathode photo-accelerated fast charging with deformations in local structure

The growth in electrified transportation has benefited from the massive worldwide research efforts used to discover and improve electrode materials and electrolytes. Nevertheless, lithium-ion batteries still suffer from a slow-charging limitation. Recently, it has been demonstrated that white light illumination of LiMn2O4 provokes faster charging, improving the kinetics of delithiation without the use of nanostructured active materials. In this work, we probe the mechanism of photo-accelerated fast charging and show that Mn d-d electronic transitions occurring under red light illumination are largely responsible for the increased charging rate. It is further demonstrated through X-ray absorption spectroscopy methods that LiMn2O4 Mn-Mn bond distances shorten after d-electron excitation. The shrinkage in the crystal volume beneficially contributes to delithiation kinetics by lowering the resistance to lithium-ion conduction. Advanced materials that can absorb light to modulate their structure may provide us with a new mechanistic pathway to pursue for increasing charge transfer rates.

High-throughput, combinatorial synthesis of multimetallic nanoclusters

Significance Multielement nanomaterials hold great promise for various applications due to their widely tunable surface chemistry, yet it remains challenging to efficiently study this multidimensional space. Conventional approaches are typically slow and depend on serendipity, while a robust and general synthesis is still lacking among increasingly complex compositions. We report a high-throughput technique for combinatorial compositional design (formulation in solution phases) and rapid synthesis (within seconds) of ultrafine multimetallic nanoclusters with a homogeneous alloy structure. We synthesized and screened the PtPdRhRuIrFeCoNi compositional space using scanning droplet cell electrochemistry, with two promising catalysts quickly identified and further verified in a rotating disk setup. The reported high-throughput approach establishes a facile and reliable pipeline to significantly accelerate material discovery in multimetallic nanomaterials.
