Point spread function deconvolution using a convolutional autoencoder

A major issue in optical astronomical image analysis is the combined effect of the instrument’s point spread function (PSF) and the atmospheric seeing that blurs images and changes their shape in a way that is band and time-of-observation dependent. In this work we present a very simple neural network based approach to nonblind image deconvolution that relies on feeding a convolutional autoencoder (CAE) input images that have been preprocessed by convolution with the corresponding PSF and its regularized inverse, a method which is both conceptually simple and computationally less intensive. We also present here, a new approach for dealing with limited input dynamic range of neural networks compared to the dynamic range present in astronomical images.

Structured Neural Network Modeling for Developing Digital Twins Models of Hydropower Generation Units

Dynamic modeling is a key part in the development of digital twin (DT) for dynamic systems. This is true for hydropower systems, where whole system modeling including penstock, turbine and generators, etc is important in realizing actuate modeling for the real systems. On the other hand, in response to the large variations of the power demand due to increased penetration of renewables such as wind and solar, hydropower systems are now required to operate in a large power generation range. This situation triggers the nonlinear characteristics of the generation unit with respect to its models. As such, it is imperative to use data driven modeling such as neural networks to learn the nonlinear dynamics of the hydropower generation unit. To achieve this objective, this study constructs a modeling and learning algorithm integrated with multiple structured neural network models for the modeling of turbine shaft speed, penstock pressure, and generator power output based on the generator power control setpoint, field current, and field voltage. In addition, the study uses the hydropower data from Tacoma Public Utilities to train and validate the proposed neural network algorithm. The results have shown that this structured neural network modeling approach can learn the system dynamics effectively by using the real-time data collected from the hydropower system with the desired modeling results.

Towards the Flexibility of HVDC-Interconnected Systems: A Novel Emergency Freqeuncy Response Model

In this paper, we propose a novel multi-time scale emergency frequency response model by unlocking the flexibility of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) systems. Unlike assigning power ramping rates for FACTS to regulate frequency in traditional methods, this paper designs a step-change electromagnetic power frequency response (EPFR) scheme, by leveraging the temporal over/under DC voltage capability of HVDC. Wherein the Kullback-Leibler Divergence is adopted to convexify the modified swing equation after integrating the step-change power. Further, to avoid the complicated differential equations, we equivalently reformulate the duration limits of DC voltage deviation into the HVDC decreasing power ramping rates, which participate in the system primary frequency response. Finally, the new steady-state operation level of HVDC is involved with the secondary frequency response. As a result, an improved three-level algorithm is developed to solve the model, wherein the instant step-change, primary, and secondary frequency response are coordinated together. After applying the proposed frequency response scheme on the test system, the EPFR is validated to effectively provide the most instantaneous supports when faced with bulk power loss due to extreme contingencies, and the resilience is ensured within acceptable expenditures.

Evaluation of the Mechanical Properties of Cast and Wrought CF8C-Plus Relevant to ASME Code Case Qualification

The mechanical behavior of a cast form of an advanced austenitic stainless steel, CF8C-Plus, is compared with that of its wrought equivalent in terms of both tensile and creep-rupture properties and estimated allowable stress values for pressurized service at temperatures up to about 850°C. A traditional Larson-Miller parametric model is used to analyze the creep-rupture data and to predict long-term lifetimes for comparison of the two alloy types. The cast CF8C-Plus exhibited lower yield and tensile strengths, but higher creep strength compared to its wrought counterpart. Two welding methods, shielded-metal-arc welding (SMAW) and gas-metal-arc welding, met the weld qualification acceptance criteria in ASME BPVC Section IX for the cast CF8C-Plus. However, for the wrought CF8C-Plus, while SMAW and gas-tungsten-arc welding passed the tensile acceptance criteria, they failed the side bend tests due to lack of fusion or weld metal discontinuities.

Fatigue Testing and Characterization of Pre-hydrided Zircaloy-4 Cladding Tubes

The solubility of hydrogen in Zircaloy-4 (Zry-4) at the cladding operating temperature is near 100 wt. ppm. Above this solubility limit, excess hydrogen precipitates as δ-hydride platelets in the cladding material. Because of the effect of the thermal gradient across the cladding thickness on the migration and precipitation of hydrogen, hydride rims are often observed at the cladding outer surface; under excessive corrosion conditions hydride blisters are possible. It is well known that the fatigue of metal alloys, especially high cycle fatigue, is sensitive to the status of surface including the microstructure, roughness, and residual stress. Thus, the question considered herein, is whether excessive hydrogen pickup modifies the microstructure such that it has a degradation effect on the fatigue performance of cladding during operation. This report describes the evaluation of fatigue performance of a pre-hydrided Zry-4 cladding. A commercial Zry-4 was polished and pre-hydrided to 800 ppm and 1300 ppm H contents. The fatigue testing was conducted under strain control at 5 Hz with fully-reversed bending by using a cyclic integrated reversible bending fatigue tester (CIRFT). Six specimens with 1300 ppm and one specimen with 800 ppm were tested. Significant variation in test results were observed. While two of the 1300 ppm specimens failed with less than 1 ×10 5 cycles (at 0.32% and 0.41%), the four other samples did not fail over the strain amplitude range of 0.25% to 0.38%. Interestingly, the fracture initiation site of the failed samples was on the outside diameter (OD) surface rather than on the inside diameter (ID) surface as is typical for the as-polished cladding. This suggested a degrading effect of the hydriding process. Subsequently, three of the unfailed specimens were then further tested at ~0.43% to observe where failure initiation occurred. Significant variation was also observed in these three specimens. One specimen failed at ~9000 cycles while the two others failed at 43000 and 1.06 ×10 5 cycles. The performance here correlated to the location of failure initiation; failure initiated on the OD in the sample that failed after 9000 cycles while it initiated on the ID in the sample that failed after 43000 and 1.06 ×10 5 cycles. Flat features at the OD initiation sites suggest a brittle hydride feature on the surface of those samples was the cause of the degradation in fatigue performance, though the overall hydrogen levels in all samples was similar. A summary of all the observations is provided below: • The un-failed specimens with 1300 ppm H were cycled to failure with a higher amplitude near 0.43%. In addition, the fatigue-treated specimen tended to have a longer fatigue at the same induced amplitude. • Fractography revealed a mixed failure mode for the pre-hydrided specimen. Particularly, the specimen with fracture initiation site (FIS) located on the outer diameter surface of tube tended to have a shorter fatigue life than that of FIS on the inner diameter surface. • Etched cross section was shown to have hydride platelets aligned with tube longitudinal axis as expected, and the density of hydrides is at the similar level as in literature data. Meanwhile, a LECO procedure was applied for hydrogen concentration measurement, which showed the measured hydrogen contents are close to the nominal value. • With the polished cladding tube as baseline, O’Donnell-Lager (O-L) analysis showed that a decrease of about 50% in reduction-of-area (RA) would be needed for the O-L fitting to the fatigue data of 1300 ppm cladding. The suggestion for the next steps is provided.

Cyclically conjugated porphyrin trimers linked through benzo[4,5]imidazo[2,1- a ]isoindole bridges

Cyclically conjugated porphyrin trimers were prepared via a concise synthetic method. Zn-Trimer-1 displayed strong exciton coupling, suggesting the presence of effective electronic interactions. UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence spectra obtained through titration studies on the donor–acceptor adduct (Zn-Trimer-1–C60Im) indicate the occurrence of excited state photo-events. Inspired by nature's photosynthetic process of plants and bacteria, electronically interacting multiporphyrinic systems have long been investigated as synthetic models of natural photosynthetic systems. Remarkable successes have been achieved with cyclic porphyrin arrays, where porphyrins are arranged in a wheel-like structure or nanoring as photosynthetic antennae. Considerable efforts have also been devoted to constructing other porphyrin arrays such as molecular wires for potential applications in sensors, solar energy conversion, non-linear optical (NLO) materials, and more. Due to synthetic difficulties, cyclically conjugated porphyrin arrays in which porphyrins are arranged in planar geometry are very rare. Very recently, Anderson and coworkers have reported unprecedented β,β-directly linked porphyrin trimers and tetramers with different geometries, propeller and saddle, respectively, which result in distinct photophysical and electrochemical properties (Fig. 1a). In this paper, we present novel cyclically conjugated porphyrin trimers, which feature planar geometry with porphyrins assembled around the aromatic triphenylene at the center (Fig. 1b).

Traffic Signal Control for Large-Scale Urban Traffic Networks: Real-World Experiments using Vision-Based Sensors

Effective control of traffic signals plays a critical role in ensuring smooth vehicle flow in urban areas. Expertly engineered traffic signal controllers can considerably minimize travel delays and enhance sustainability. In this paper, the team proposes the Model Predictive Control (MPC) traffic signal control strategy using real-time traffic flow data from a vision-based camera as feedback information. Also, a realistic signal timing plan that considers National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) constraints has been developed to be applied to real-world scenarios. The primary aim is to reduce the number of vehicles across all links in the controlled area, thereby optimizing traffic flow and reducing energy consumption. To validate the proposed method, several real-life experiments were conducted at 24 intersections in Chattanooga, Tennessee, by collaborating with traffic field engineers. These experiments demonstrated significant performance improvements in comparison to the existing method.

Minimum entropy filtering for a single output non-Gaussian stochastic system using state transformation

This paper presents a novel filter design for the single-output stochastic non-linear systems subjected to non-Gaussian noises and the proposed assumptions. Based on a state transformation, the unmeasurable states of the systems can be estimated where non-linear terms in the systems have been eliminated. It has been shown that the estimation error is linearly dynamical regarding to the presented vector-valued filter gain which can be optimised by minimising the entropy-based performance criterion. In addition, the convergence of the presented algorithm is analysed in mean-square sense and a numerical example is given to verify the effectiveness of the presented filtering algorithm. Meanwhile, the extended Kalman filter, unscented particle filter and minimum entropy filter are given for the comparisons of the filtering performance. Following the presented framework, some extensions of the presented filtering algorithm are discussed to indicate the flexibility of the filter design. The contribution of this paper can be summarised as establishing a novel minimum entropy filtering framework which consists of model transformation, entropy optimisation and convergence analysis.

The Integrated Virtual Blast Furnace: Enabling Physics-Based Operational Guidance

As part of a DOE-supported research effort, Purdue University Northwest researchers are collaborating with Oak Ridge National Laboratory and United States Steel Corporation to develop a tool to provide blast furnace operators and engineers with process performance insight comparable to high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics modeling, accelerated to provide “what-if” scenarios at near-real-time speed. This is accomplished by pre-simulating a baseline case and a range of potential operating scenarios to establish how the furnace responds to changing inputs, then training a neural network-based Reduced Order Model to accelerate the speed at which predictions of key parameters can be generated.

Fractal analysis on Ag 2 O thin film using a data-driven approach

The synthesis of fractal Ag oxide (Ag 2 O) on the surface of Ag thin film has been achieved at room temperature by using Synchrotron X-ray irradiation. We have performed an automated quantitative analysis of a batch of 1879 fractal Ag 2 O patterns in a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image within a radius of 2000 mm outward from the center of the X-ray beam. The morphology is similar to that of the diffusion-limited cluster aggregation (DLCA) model. The fractal dimension (D) of Ag 2 O is between 1.7 and 1.5 from the center to the edge. The area distribution density of fractal Ag 2 O follows a quadratic function with radius R. It is found that the branches’ number of fractal Ag 2 O is a key factor affecting the fractal dimension. The more branches the fractal has, the greater the D is. This is the first time that Ag fractal has been investigated by combining automated data analysis methods with batch experimental data. This data-driven approach provides a new research perspective for rationally regulating materials’ fractal morphology and performance.

Exploring Robust Features for Improving Adversarial Robustness

While deep neural networks (DNNs) have revolutionized many fields, their fragility to carefully designed adversarial attacks impedes the usage of DNNs in safety-critical applications. In this article, we strive to explore the robust features that are not affected by the adversarial perturbations, that is, invariant to the clean image and its adversarial examples (AEs), to improve the model’s adversarial robustness. Specifically, we propose a feature disentanglement model to segregate the robust features from nonrobust features and domain-specific features. Here, the extensive experiments on five widely used datasets with different attacks demonstrate that robust features obtained from our model improve the model’s adversarial robustness compared to the state-of-the-art approaches. Moreover, the trained domain discriminator is able to identify the domain-specific features from the clean images and AEs almost perfectly. This enables AE detection without incurring additional computational costs. With that, we can also specify different classifiers for clean images and AEs, thereby avoiding any drop in clean image accuracy.

Model Gap Quantification and Evaluation

In the real world, model gaps always exist because models cannot perfectly match the objective physical plants. Model gaps reflect the integrity of models, which is vital for model validation and calibration. This letter proposes a novel approach for model gap quantification and evaluation. First, a comprehensive metric is developed to quantify dynamic model gaps. Next, the model gaps are evaluated from a panoramic view of the probability distribution of the comprehensive metric for multiple scenarios. Finally, we demonstrate the proposed quantification and evaluation approach through synchronous machine models.

A Dataset of CFD Simulated Industrial Furnace Images for Conditional Automatic Generation with GANs

The steel industry is constantly looking for ways to automate processes and improve efficiency. A standard practice in industry is to simulate how complex systems will operate before they are actually used. Some complex systems, including steel industry processes such as blast furnaces, require complex physics-based simulations utilizing computational fluid dynamics (CFD). These CFD physics-based simulations are very accurate but can take significant time and computational resources to process, resulting in challenges for the implementation of the models in real-world operational environments. In recent years, deep learning (DL) has been considered as a substitute for these CFD models. DL models can be trained on validated CFD simulation data and then used for industrial process inference. Previous DL-based solutions have made great contributions for industrial automation but are currently missing the additional visualization component that CFD simulations also provide. In this paper, we propose a dataset for simple DL generative approaches that can help to address this issue. The dataset and methodology under development to approach this prediction are discussed in this work.

Multi-Edge Graph Convolutional Networks for Power Systems

The exponential electrification of transportation has contributed to highly intermittent load variations in the distribution grid. This uncertainty has raised challenges for distribution system operation and control. Accurate nodal voltage estimation is highly essential for the safe and reliable operation of the grid. Graph convolutional networks have been used in machine-learning-based models for power grid applications like voltage estimation for their ability to capture the network topology of the grid. This paper presents a novel multi-edge graph convolutional layer that considers resistance and reactance as edge attributes. This layer is created by modifying the message-passing function within the graph convolutional network. The novel layer is then used to create a multi-edge graph convolutional network-based surrogate model for estimating voltage in the distribution network with highly uncertain electric vehicle loads. Results indicate improved performance of the multi-edge graph convolutional network model when compared to a standard graph convolutional network model.

Sister Rod Destructive Examinations (FY23) Appendix F: Cyclic Integrated Reversible-Bending Fatigue Tests

Spent nuclear fuel (SNF) assemblies must be shipped to other sites for processing and disposal. During shipment, the fuel is typically oriented horizontally, and the fuel rods are subject to periodic alternating loads related to the movement of the vehicle that results in alternating bending of the SNF fuel rods. The number of bending cycles is related to the length of the shipping route, with longer routes producing more cycles. Because it is well-known that cyclic loads can produce failures, even when the stress and strain imposed are below the material’s yield point, investigation of the SNF’s fatigue behavior is prudent. This report discusses the results of fatigue testing conducted at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) using the Cyclic Integrated Reversible-Bending Fatigue Tester (CIRFT) created by the US Department of Energy Office of Nuclear Energy for the High Burnup Spent Fuel Data Project and its sister rods. The results of the tests are compared with results obtained over the last decade using the same CIRFT for the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).
