Visually resolving the direct Z-scheme heterojunction in CdS@ZnIn 2 S 4 hollow cubes for photocatalytic evolution of H 2 and H 2 O 2 from pure water

We report the direct Z-scheme heterojunction has been recently emerging as an appealing architecture for photocatalysts design. Its efficiency depends on the interfacial and structural features of the photocatalysts. Herein, the two-dimensional ZnIn 2 S 4 nanosheets are grown on the surface of CdS hollow cubes to construct the CdS@ZnIn 2 S 4 hierarchical hollow photocatalysts with chemically bonded interface. The visualized measurements based on spatial-resolved surface photovoltage spectroscopy, combined with other spectroscopic and simulation investigations, clearly disclose that the CdS@ZnIn 2 S 4 hollow cubes constitute a highly efficient direct Z-scheme system. This accounts for the stoichiometric generation of H 2 and H 2 O 2 from pure water observed for the CdS@ZnIn 2 S 4 sulfide-only photocatalysts under visible light irradiation with an apparent quantum efficiency of 1.63 % at 400 nm. The present work demonstrates an effective protocol to achieve comprehensive insights into the charge transfer route at semiconductor heterojunction, and offers a viable way for constructing efficient sulfide-only photocatalysts for driving water splitting reaction.

Flexible and high-performance electrochromic devices enabled by self-assembled 2D TiO 2 /MXene heterostructures

Transition metal oxides (TMOs) are promising electrochromic (EC) materials for applications such as smart windows and displays, yet the challenge still exists to achieve good flexibility, high coloration efficiency and fast response simultaneously. MXenes (e.g. Ti 3 C 2 T x ) and their derived TMOs (e.g. 2D TiO 2 ) are good candidates for high-performance and flexible EC devices because of their 2D nature and the possibility of assembling them into loosely networked structures. Here we demonstrate flexible, fast, and high-coloration-efficiency EC devices based on self-assembled 2D TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x heterostructures, with the Ti 3 C 2 T x layer as the transparent electrode, and the 2D TiO 2 layer as the EC layer. Benefiting from the well-balanced porosity and connectivity of these assembled nanometer-thick heterostructures, they present fast and efficient ion and electron transport, as well as superior mechanical and electrochemical stability. We further demonstrate large-area flexible devices which could potentially be integrated onto curved and flexible surfaces for future ubiquitous electronics.

Intercalation-Induced Reversible Electrochromic Behavior of Two-Dimensional Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene in Organic Electrolytes

MXenes, a large family of two-dimensional materials, have attracted tremendous attention due to their unique physical and chemical properties. Reversible ion intercalation between MXene layers allows modification of the optical, thermal, magnetic, and chemical properties. The electrochemical charge/discharge of MXenes in aqueous electrolytes was reported to lead to reversible electrochromic behavior. In this work, the electrochromic effect of semitransparent Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene film was probed by electrochemical intercalation of Li ions. Correspondingly, a peak shift of 100 nm was observed in the UV-vis spectrum. By combining in-situ Raman spectroscopy, in-situ X-ray diffraction, and density functional theory calculations, we show that the electrochromic shift is primarily due to the formation of robust O-Li bonds and the emerging bands induced changes of inter-band excitations. Finally, understanding the mechanism of electrochromic behavior in Ti 3 C 2 T x lays the foundations of designating 2D materials with durable, controllable, and efficient intercalation-induced electrochromic behaviors.

Ultra-thermostable RNA nanoparticles for solubilizing and high-yield loading of paclitaxel for breast cancer therapy

Paclitaxel is widely used in cancer treatments, but poor water-solubility and toxicity raise serious concerns. Here we report an RNA four-way junction nanoparticle with ultra-thermodynamic stability to solubilize and load paclitaxel for targeted cancer therapy. Each RNA nanoparticle covalently loads twenty-four paclitaxel molecules as a prodrug. The RNA-paclitaxel complex is structurally rigid and stable, demonstrated by the sub-nanometer resolution imaging of cryo-EM. Using RNA nanoparticles as carriers increases the water-solubility of paclitaxel by 32,000-fold. Intravenous injections of RNA-paclitaxel nanoparticles with specific cancer-targeting ligand dramatically inhibit breast cancer growth, with nearly undetectable toxicity and immune responses in mice. No fatalities are observed at a paclitaxel dose equal to the reported LD 50 . The use of ultra-thermostable RNA nanoparticles to deliver chemical prodrugs addresses issues with RNA unfolding and nanoparticle dissociation after high-density drug loading. This finding provides a stable nano-platform for chemo-drug delivery as well as an efficient method to solubilize hydrophobic drugs.
