A hidden demethylation pathway removes mercury from rice plants and mitigates mercury flux to food chains

Dietary exposure to methylmercury (MeHg) causes irreversible damage to human cognition and is mitigated by photolysis and microbial demethylation of MeHg. Rice (Oryza sativa L.) has been identified as a major dietary source of MeHg. However, it remains unknown what drives the process within plants for MeHg to make its way from soils to rice and the subsequent human dietary exposure to Hg. Here we report a hidden pathway of MeHg demethylation independent of light and microorganisms in rice plants. This natural pathway is driven by reactive oxygen species generated in vivo, rapidly transforming MeHg to inorganic Hg and then eliminating Hg from plants as gaseous Hg°. MeHg concentrations in rice grains would increase by 2.4- to 4.7-fold without this pathway, which equates to intelligence quotient losses of 0.01–0.51 points per newborn in major rice-consuming countries, corresponding to annual economic losses of US$30.7–84.2 billion globally. Importantly, this discovered pathway effectively removes Hg from human food webs, playing an important role in exposure mitigation and global Hg cycling.

First measurement of the characteristic depletion radius of dark matter haloes from weak lensing

ABSTRACT We use weak lensing observations to make the first measurement of the characteristic depletion radius, one of the three radii that characterize the region where matter is being depleted by growing haloes. The lenses are taken from the halo catalogue produced by the extended halo-based group/cluster finder applied to DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys DR9, while the sources are extracted from the DECaLS DR8 imaging data with the fourier_quad pipeline. We study halo masses $12 \lt \log (M_{\rm grp} \,[{\rm M_{\odot }}\, h^{-1}]) \le 15.3$ within redshifts 0.2 ≤ z ≤ 0.3. The virial and splashback radii are also measured and used to test the original findings on the depletion region. When binning haloes by mass, we find consistency between most of our measurements and predictions from the cosmicgrowth simulation, with exceptions to the lowest mass bins. The characteristic depletion radius is found to be roughly 2.5 times the virial radius and 1.7–3 times the splashback radius, in line with an approximately universal outer density profile, and the average enclosed density within the characteristic depletion radius is found to be roughly 29 times the mean matter density of the Universe in our sample. When binning haloes by both mass and a proxy for halo concentration, we do not detect a significant variation of the depletion radius with concentration, on which the simulation prediction is also sensitive to the choice of concentration proxy. We also confirm that the measured splashback radius varies with concentration differently from simulation predictions.

Effects of aluminum content on thermoelectric performance of Al x CoCrFeNi high-entropy alloys

Introducing a non-regular distribution in the mass and bonding by including distinctly different elements can reduce the phonon transport even within structurally well-ordered materials. These distributions are a quality of all high-entropy alloys (HEAs), however the inclusion of aluminum in Al x CoCrFeNi is particularly impactful due to the large mismatch in atomic mass with other components. The resultant low phonon conductivity is a requirement for high thermoelectric performance, motivating the investigation of the effects of Al content on phonon transport as well as other thermoelectric properties. This work examines the phonon and electron transport and thermoelectric conversion properties with various Al contents (0 ≤ x Al ≤ 2) in this Cantor alloy using first-principles calculations, molecular dynamics, and semi-classical Boltzmann transport theory. The calculated phonon density of states and thermoelectric properties present reasonable agreements with experiments, including neutron scattering. A large reduction of phonon conductivity (k L ) is observed even with low x Al s, which we attribute to effective phonon scatterings by the large mass mismatch. However, its temperature dependence is not significant, demonstrating a minor contribution of interphonon scattering. In contrast, electrical conductivity (σ) and Seebeck coefficient (S) increase with temperature at higher x Al s with body-centered cubic structures. Therefore, the thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) of Al x CoCrFeNi HEAs is enhanced by increasing the Al content mainly due to the increase of the thermoelectric power factor (σS 2 ) at high temperatures, while at low temperatures the phonon-scattering enhancement by mass mismatch is also important.

Linear simulation of kinetic electromagnetic instabilities in a tokamak plasma with weak magnetic shear

Gyrokinetic simulation and eigenvalue calculation of electromagnetic instabilities are carried out for an experimentally observed low-n mode in weak magnetic shear discharge. With different magnetic shear values, the Gyrokinetic Toroidal Code simulation of the ion temperature gradient mode is consistent with the eigenvalue code (HD7) calculation. Due to the sensitivity of the kinetic ballooning mode (KBM) to global equilibrium, the simulation of the KBM deviates from the eigenvalue results, for the ballooning representation used in HD7 satisfies its spatial scale separations. Under a flat safety factor profile, the KBM is more unstable and its mode structure tends to move with the peak of the ion temperature drive. Further simulation of the KBM in an HL-2A-like equilibrium shows that the β excitation threshold of the mode is lower than 0.2% and the dominant toroidal mode number is n = 4, which is consistent with the measured experimental spectrum.
