Improving E3SM Land Model Photosynthesis Parameterization via Satellite SIF, Machine Learning, and Surrogate Modeling

The parameterization of key photosynthesis parameters is one of the key uncertain sources in modeling ecosystem gross primary productivity (GPP). Solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) offers a good proxy for GPP since it marks the actual process of photosynthesis; while machine learning (ML) provides a robust approach to model the GPP-SIF relationship. Here, we trained the boosted regressing tree (BRT) and the Random Forest ML models with Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite SIF data and in situ GPP observations from 49 eddy covariance towers. These trained ML GPP-SIF models were fed into the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) Land Model (ELM) to generate ELM-simulated global SIF estimates, which were then benchmarked against satellite SIF observations with a surrogate modeling approach. Our results indicated good modeling performance of the ML-based GPP-SIF relationship. The ELM model when fed with the ML GPP-SIF models also can well predict the spatial-temporal variations in SIF. We also found high model accuracy for the surrogate modeling. Model parameter sensitivity analysis suggested that the fraction of leaf nitrogen in RuBisCO (flnr) is the most sensitive parameter to the SIF; other sensitive parameters include the Ball-Berry stomatal conductance slope (mbbopt) and the vcmax entropy (vcmaxse). The posterior uncertainty in simulated GPP was greatly reduced after benchmarking, and the model produced improved spatial patterns of mean GPP relative to FLUXCOM GPP. Our integrated approach provides a new avenue for improving land models and using remote-sensing SIF, which can be further improved in the future with more ground- and satellite-based observations.

Climate change increases carbon allocation to leaves in early leaf green-up

Global greening, characterized by an increase in leaf area index (LAI), implies an increase in foliar carbon (C). Whether this increase in foliar C under climate change is due to higher photosynthesis or to higher allocation of C to leaves remains unknown. Here, we explored the trends in foliar C accumulation and allocation during leaf green-up from 2000 to 2017 using satellite-derived LAI and solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) across the Northern Hemisphere. The accumulation of foliar C accelerated in the early green-up period due to both increased photosynthesis and higher foliar C allocation driven by climate change. In the late stage of green-up, however, we detected decreasing trends in foliar C accumulation and foliar C allocation. Such stage-dependent trends in the accumulation and allocation of foliar C are not represented in current terrestrial biosphere models. Further, our results highlight that a better representation of C allocation should be incorporated into models.

Unraveling the Nature of Excellent Potassium Storage in Small-Molecule Se@Peapod-Like N-Doped Carbon Nanofibers

The potassium-selenium (K-Se) battery is considered as an alternative solution for stationary energy storage because of abundant resource of K. However, the detailed mechanism of the energy storage process is yet to be unraveled. In this work, the findings in probing the working mechanism of the K-ion storage in Se cathode are reported using both experimental and computational approaches. A flexible K-Se battery is prepared by employing the small-molecule Se embedded in freestanding N -doped porous carbon nanofibers thin film (Se@NPCFs) as cathode. The reaction mechanisms are elucidated by identifying the existence of short-chain molecular Se encapsulated inside the microporous host, which transforms to K 2 Se by a two-step conversion reaction via an "all-solid-state" electrochemical process in the carbonate electrolyte system. Through the whole reaction, the generation of polyselenides (K 2 Se n , 3 ≤ n ≤ 8) is effectively suppressed by electrochemical reaction dominated by Se-2 molecules, thus significantly enhancing the utilization of Se and effecting the voltage platform of the K-Se battery. This work offers a practical pathway to optimize the K-Se battery performance through structure engineering and manipulation of selenium chemistry for the formation of selective species and reveal its internal reaction mechanism in the carbonate electrolyte.

Low-loss low thermo-optic coefficient Ta 2 O 5 on crystal quartz planar optical waveguides

Optical resonator-based frequency stabilization plays a critical role in ultra-low linewidth laser emission and precision sensing, atom clocks, and quantum applications. However, there has been limited success in translating traditional bench-top stabilization cavities to compact on-chip integrated waveguide structures that are compatible with photonic integration. The challenge lies in realizing waveguides that not only deliver low optical loss but also exhibit a low thermo-optic coefficient and frequency noise stability. Given the problematic sources of frequency noise within dielectrics, such as thermorefractive noise, resonators with small thermo-optic response are desirable for on-chip reference cavities. We report the first demonstration of a Ta 2 O 5 (tantala) waveguide core fabricated on a crystal quartz substrate lower cladding with TEOS-PECVD SiO 2 upper cladding. This waveguide offers significant advantages over other waveguides in terms of its low thermo-optic coefficient and reduced thermorefractive-related frequency noise. We describe the waveguide structure and key design parameters as well as fabrication considerations for processing tantala on quartz waveguides. We report a waveguide thermo-optic coefficient of -1.14 × 10 -6 RIU/K, a value that is over 6 times smaller in magnitude than that of SiO 2 -substrate tantala waveguides, with a propagation loss of 1.19 dB/cm at 1550 nm and <1.33 dB/cm across the 1525 nm–1610 nm wavelength range. Within a 1.6 mm radius ring resonator, we demonstrate a 2.54 × 10 5 intrinsic Q factor. With the potential for very low loss and the ability to control the thermal response, this waveguide platform takes a key step toward creating thermally stable integrated resonators for on-chip laser frequency stabilization and other applications.

Bismuthene for highly efficient carbon dioxide electroreduction reaction

Bismuth (Bi) has been known as a highly efficient electrocatalyst for CO 2 reduction reaction. Stable free-standing two-dimensional Bi monolayer (Bismuthene) structures have been predicted theoretically, but never realized experimentally. Here, we show the first simple large-scale synthesis of free-standing Bismuthene, to our knowledge, and demonstrate its high electrocatalytic efficiency for formate (HCOO - ) formation from CO 2 reduction reaction. The catalytic performance is evident by the high Faradaic efficiency (99% at -580 mV vs. Reversible Hydrogen Electrode (RHE)), small onset overpotential (<90 mV) and high durability (no performance decay after 75 h and annealing at 400 °C). Density functional theory calculations show the structure-sensitivity of the CO2 reduction reaction over Bismuthene and thicker nanosheets, suggesting that selective formation of HCOO - indeed can proceed easily on Bismuthene (111) facet due to the unique compressive strain. This work paves the way for the extensive experimental investigation of Bismuthene in many different fields.
