LAGER Ly α Luminosity Function at z ~ 7: Implications for Reionization

We present a new measurement of the Lyα luminosity function (LF) at redshift z = 6.9, finding moderate evolution from z = 5.7 that is consistent with a fully or largely ionized z ~ 7 intergalactic medium. Our result is based on four fields of the LAGER (Lyman Alpha Galaxies in the Epoch of Reionization) project. Our survey volume of 6.1 × 10 6 Mpc 3 is double that of the next largest z ~ 7 survey. We combine two new LAGER fields (WIDE12 and GAMA15A) with two previously reported LAGER fields (COSMOS and CDFS). In the new fields, we identify N = 95 new z = 6.9 Lyα emitter (LAEs) candidates, characterize our survey's completeness and reliability, and compute Lyα LFs. The best-fit Schechter LF parameters for all four LAGER fields are in good general agreement. Two fields (COSMOS and WIDE12) show evidence for a bright-end excess above the Schechter function fit. We find that the Lyα luminosity density declines at the same rate as the UV continuum LF from z = 5.7 to 6.9. This is consistent with an intergalactic medium that was fully ionized as early as redshift z ~ 7 or with a volume-averaged neutral hydrogen fraction of x H I < 0.33 at 1σ.

Extreme Variability Quasars in Their Various States. I. The Sample Selection and Composite SDSS Spectra

Extremely variable quasars (EVQs) are a population of sources showing large optical photometric variability revealed by time-domain surveys. The physical origin of such extreme variability is yet unclear. In this first paper of a series, we construct the largest-ever sample of 14,012 EVQs using more than 15 yr of photometric data from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and Pan-STARRS1. We divide the EVQs into five subsamples according to the relative brightness of each EVQ during SDSS spectroscopic observation compared with the mean brightness from photometric observations. Corresponding control samples of normal quasars are built with matched redshift, bolometric luminosity, and supermassive black hole mass. We obtain the composite SDSS spectra of EVQs in various states and their corresponding control samples. We find EVQs exhibit clearly bluer SDSS spectra during bright states and clearly redder spectra during dim states, consistent with the "bluer-when-brighter" trend widely seen in normal quasars. We further find that the line equivalent widths (EWs) of broad Mg II, C IV and [O III] (but not broad Hβ, which is yet puzzling) gradually decreases from the dim state to the bright state, similar to the so-called intrinsic Baldwin effect commonly seen in normal active galactic nuclei. In addition, EVQs have consistently larger line EWs compared with the control samples. We also see that EVQs show slight excess in the very broad line component compared with control samples. Possible explanations for the discoveries are discussed. Our findings support the hypothesis that EVQs are in the tail of a broad distribution of quasar properties but are not a distinct population.

Lyα Galaxies in the Epoch of Reionization (LAGER): Spectroscopic Confirmation of Two Redshift ~7.0 Galaxies

We spectroscopically confirmed two narrowband-selected redshift 7.0 Lyα galaxies and studied their rest-frame UV spectra. The Lyα and other UV nebular lines are very useful to confirm the galactic redshifts and diagnose the different mechanisms driving the ionizing emission. We observed two narrowband-selected z = 7.0 Lyα candidates in the LAGER Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS) field with IMACS at the Magellan telescope and confirmed they are Lyα emitters at z = 6.924 and 6.931. In one galaxy, we also obtained deep near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, which yields non-detections of the high-ionization UV nebular lines. We measured the upper limits of the ratios of C iv λ1548/Lyα, He ii λ1640/Lyα, O iii]λ1660/Lyα, and C iii]λ1909/Lyα from the NIR spectra. These upper limits imply that the ionizing emission in this galaxy is dominated by normal star formation instead of an active galactic nucleus.

Halpha Emitting Galaxies at Z ~ 0.6 in the Deep and Wide Narrow-Band Survey

We present new measurements of the Hα luminosity function (LF) and star formation rate (SFR) volume density for galaxies at z∼0.62 in the COSMOS field. Our results are part of the Deep And Wide Narrow-band Survey (DAWN), a unique infrared imaging program with large areal coverage (∼1.1 deg2 over five fields) and sensitivity (9.9 x 10(exp -18) erg cm(exp -2) s(exp -1) at 5σ). The present sample, based on a single DAWN field, contains 116 Hα emission line candidates at z∼0.62, 25% of which have spectroscopic confirmations. These candidates have been selected through the comparison of narrow and broad-band images in the infrared and through matching with existing catalogs in the COSMOS field. The dust-corrected LF is well described by a Schechter function with L* = 10 (exp 42.64 +/- 0.92) erg s (exp −1), Phi* = 10 (exp -3.320.93)Mpc(exp −3), L*Phi* = L 10(exp 39.40) 0.15 erg s(exp −1)Mpc(exp −3), and α=−1.75+/-0.09. From this LF, we calculate a SFR density of ρSFR=10(exp −1.37+/-0.08)solar mass yr(exp −1)Mpc(exp −3). We expect an additional cosmic variance uncertainty of ∼20%. Both the faint end slope and luminosity density that we derive are consistent with prior results at similar redshifts, with reduced uncertainties. We also present an analysis of these Hα emitters' sizes, which shows a direct correlation between the galaxies' sizes and their Hα emission.
