Superconductivity and topological properties of MgB 2 -type diborides from first principles

The superconductivities and topological properties of MgB 2 -type diborides are investigated by means of first-principles calculations with different exchange-correlation functionals. Functionals with the van der Waals (vdW) correction (such as OptB88-vdW) may predict critical temperature (T c ) comparable with experimental results for several MgB 2 -type superconductors, particularly for the pristine MgB 2 (39.3 vs 39 K). Interestingly, the spin-fluctuation is found to play a significant role in the superconducting behavior of diborides with transition metal elements, and their T c can be enhanced monotonically by applying tensile strains. Furthermore, Dirac surface states of Ta B 2 and NbB 2 are revealed, suggesting their potential use as topological superconducting materials. Finally, this paper provides a useful guideline for ab initio studies of superconductivities and topological properties of vdW layered materials.

Effect of correlated oxide electrodes on disorder pinning and thermal roughening of ferroelectric domain walls in epitaxial PbZr 0.2 Ti 0.8 O 3 thin films

We report the competing effects of disorder pinning and thermal roughening on ferroelectric domain walls as a function of temperature in epitaxial PbZr 0.2 Ti 0.8 O 3 thin films deposited on (001) SrTiO 3 substrates buffered by three types of correlated oxide electrodes, La 0.67 Sr 0.33 MnO 3 , LaNiO 3 , and SrIrO 3 . Piezo-response force microscopy studies show that the 50 nm PbZr 0.2 Ti 0.8 O 3 films are uniformly polarized in the as-grown states, with the patterned domain structures persisting above 700 °C. For all three types of films, the domain wall roughness is dominated by 2D random bond disorder at room temperature, and transitions to 1D thermal roughening upon heating. The roughness exponent ζ increases progressively from 0.3 to 0.5 within a temperature window that depends on the bottom conducting oxide type, from which we extracted the distribution of disorder pinning energy. Lastly, we discuss the possible origins of the disorder pinning and the effect of the correlated oxide electrodes on the energy landscape of DW motion.

Assembly of Close–Packed Ferroelectric Polymer Nanowires via Interface–Epitaxy with ReS 2

The flexible, transparent, and low-weight nature of ferroelectric polymers makes them promising for wearable electronic and optical applications. To reach the full potential of the polarization-enabled device functionalities, large-scale fabrication of polymer thin films with well-controlled polar directions is called for, which remains a central challenge. The widely exploited Langmuir–Blodgett, spin-coating, and electrospinning methods only yield polymorphous or polycrystalline films, where the net polarization is compromised. Here, an easily scalable approach is reported to achieve poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) P(VDF-TrFE) thin films composed of close-packed crystalline nanowires via interface-epitaxy with 1T'-ReS 2 . Upon controlled thermal treatment, uniform P(VDF-TrFE) films restructure into about 10 and 35 nm-wide (010)-oriented nanowires that are crystallographically aligned with the underlying ReS 2 , as revealed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Piezoresponse force microscopy studies confirm the out-of-plane polar axis of the nanowire films and reveal coercive voltages as low as 0.1 V. Reversing the polarization can induce a conductance switching ratio of >10 8 in bilayer ReS 2 , over six orders of magnitude higher than that achieved by an untreated polymer gate. Lastly, this study points to a cost-effective route to large-scale processing of high-performance ferroelectric polymer thin films for flexible energy-efficient nanoelectronics.

Nanodevices engineering and spin transport properties of MnBi2Te4 monolayer

Abstract Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials are essential for the development of the next-generation spintronic technologies. Recently, layered van der Waals (vdW) compound MnBi 2 Te 4 (MBT) has attracted great interest, and its 2D structure has been reported to host coexisting magnetism and topology. Here, we design several conceptual nanodevices based on MBT monolayer (MBT-ML) and reveal their spin-dependent transport properties by means of the first-principles calculations. The pn -junction diodes and sub-3-nm pin -junction field-effect transistors (FETs) show a strong rectifying effect and a spin filtering effect, with an ideality factor n close to 1 even at a reasonably high temperature. In addition, the pip - and nin -junction FETs give an interesting negative differential resistive (NDR) effect. The gate voltages can tune currents through these FETs in a large range. Furthermore, the MBT-ML has a strong response to light. Our results uncover the multifunctional nature of MBT-ML, pave the road for its applications in diverse next-generation semiconductor spin electric devices.

A non-cooperative meta-modeling game for automated third-party calibrating, validating and falsifying constitutive laws with parallelized adversarial attacks

The evaluation of constitutive models, especially for high-risk and high-regret engineering applications, requires efficient and rigorous third-party calibration, validation and falsification. While there are numerous efforts to develop paradigms and standard procedures to validate models, difficulties may arise due to the sequential, manual, and often biased nature of the commonly adopted calibration and validation processes, thus slowing down data collections, hampering the progress towards discovering new physics, increasing expenses and possibly leading to misinterpretations of the credibility and application ranges of proposed models. This work attempts to introduce concepts from game theory and machine learning techniques to overcome many of these existing difficulties. Here, we introduce an automated meta-modeling game where two competing AI agents systematically generate experimental data to calibrate a given constitutive model and to explore its weakness such that the experiment design and model robustness can be improved through competitions. The two agents automatically search for the Nash equilibrium of the meta-modeling game in an adversarial reinforcement learning framework without human intervention. In particular, a protagonist agent seeks to find the more effective ways to generate data for model calibrations, while an adversary agent tries to find the most devastating test scenarios that expose the weaknesses of the constitutive model calibrated by the protagonist. By capturing all possible design options of the laboratory experiments into a single decision tree, we recast the design of experiments as a game of combinatorial moves that can be resolved through deep reinforcement learning by the two competing players. Our adversarial framework emulates idealized scientific collaborations and competitions among researchers to achieve a better understanding of the application range of the learned material laws and prevent misinterpretations caused by conventional AI-based third-party validation. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the wide applicability of the proposed meta-modeling game with adversarial attacks on both human-crafted constitutive models and machine learning models.

Determining plasmonic hot-carrier energy distributions via single-molecule transport measurements

Hot carriers in plasmonic nanostructures, generated via plasmon decay, play key roles in applications such as photocatalysis and in photodetectors that circumvent bandgap limitations. However, direct experimental quantification of steady-state energy distributions of hot carriers in nanostructures has so far been lacking. We present transport measurements from single-molecule junctions, created by trapping suitably chosen single molecules between an ultrathin gold film supporting surface plasmon polaritons and a scanning probe tip, that can provide quantification of plasmonic hot-carrier distributions. Our results show that Landau damping is the dominant physical mechanism of hot-carrier generation in nanoscale systems with strong confinement. The technique developed in this work will enable quantification of plasmonic hot-carrier distributions in nanophotonic and plasmonic devices.

SO(3)-invariance of informed-graph-based deep neural network for anisotropic elastoplastic materials

This work examines the frame-invariance (and the lack thereof) exhibited in simulated anisotropic elasto-plastic responses generated from supervised machine learning of classical multi-layer and informed-graph-based neural networks, and proposes different remedies to fix this drawback. The inherent hierarchical relations among physical quantities and state variables in an elasto-plasticity model are first represented as informed, directed graphs, where three variations of the graph are tested. While feed-forward neural networks are used to train path-independent constitutive relations (e.g., elasticity), recurrent neural networks are used to replicate responses that depends on the deformation history, i.e. or path dependent. In dealing with the objectivity deficiency, we use the spectral form to represent tensors and, subsequently, three metrics, the Euclidean distance between the Euler Angles, the distance from the identity matrix, and geodesic on the unit sphere in Lie algebra, can be employed to constitute objective functions for the supervised machine learning. In this, the aim is to minimize the measured distance between the true and the predicted 3D rotation entities. Following this, we conduct numerical experiments on how these metrics, which are theoretically equivalent, may lead to differences in the efficiency of the supervised machine learning as well as the accuracy and robustness of the resultant models. Neural network models trained with tensors represented in component form for a given Cartesian coordinate system are used as a benchmark. Our numerical tests show that, even given the same amount of information and data, the quality of the anisotropic elasto-plasticity model is highly sensitive to the way tensors are represented and measured. The results reveal that using a loss function based on geodesic on the unit sphere in Lie algebra together with an informed, directed graph yield significantly more accurate rotation prediction than the other tested approaches.

Forming Perchlorates on Mars Through Plasma Chemistry During Dust Events

We report experimental evidences to support a new formation mechanism, multiphase redox plasma chemistry, for perchlorate on Mars observed during the Phoenix mission, whose high concentrations and high ClO4/Cl ratio cannot be fully interpreted by photochemistry. This chemical reaction occurs between Cl-bearing minerals on the Mars surface and free radicals generated by electrostatic discharge (ESD) during Mars dust events (dust storms, dust devils, and grain saltation). We conducted simulated ESD experiments in a Mars chamber with pure CO2, CO2+H2O(g), and Mars Simulate Gas Mixture at Martian atmospheric pressure. We directly observed (1) the instantaneous generation of atmospheric free radicals CO2+, CO+, OI, HIII, HII, OH, ArI, N2, and N2+in normal glow discharge (NGD), detected by in situ plasma emission spectroscopy, and O3by UV and Mid-IR spectroscopy; (2) the fast transformation of NaCl to NaClO3and NaClO4detected by laser Raman spectroscopy, with oxychlorine enrichment at the sample surfaces confirmed by ion chromatography. Through two sets of experimental comparison, we found that the oxidation power of ESD-electron is three orders of magnitude higher than that of UVC-photon. We scaled our experimental results to the modeled ESD in Mars dust events and Mars surface UV radiation level, and concluded that plasma chemistry occurred during Mars dust events can be an additional important formation mechanism for the large amounts of perchlorates observed during various missions to Mars.
