Distance makes a difference in crystalline photoluminescence

Crystallization-induced photoluminescence weakening was recently revealed in ultrasmall metal nanoparticles. However, the fundamentals of the phenomenon are not understood yet. By obtaining conformational isomer crystals of gold nanoclusters, we investigate crystallization-induced photoluminescence weakening and reveal that the shortening of interparticle distance decreases photoluminescence, which is further supported by high-pressure photoluminescence experiments. To interpret this, we propose a distance-dependent non-radiative transfer model of excitation electrons and support it with additional theoretical and experimental results. This model can also explain both aggregation-induced quenching and aggregation-induced emission phenomena. This work improves our understanding of aggregated-state photoluminescence, contributes to the concept of conformational isomerism in nanoclusters, and demonstrates the utility of high pressure studies in nanochemistry.

Metabolic flux analysis reaching genome wide coverage: lessons learned and future perspectives

13 C-MFA is currently the only technique capable of elucidating intracellular metabolic fluxes. Generally, in 13 C-MFA studies the reactions that can carry flux are mostly pre-specified by only considering canonical pathways and ignoring alternate ones. This may bias flux elucidation and cause labeling data to erroneously confirm implied assumptions. Here, by expanding the scope of the metabolic mapping models to match known genome-scale metabolism such estimation biases can be eliminated. However, this model expansion to genome-scale requires the construction of expanded atom mapping models, more efficient flux estimation algorithms, and formal estimation of confidence levels. Even though significant progress has been made in this direction, a number of challenges remain before widespread adoption by the community.

Improved Annotation of Untargeted Metabolomics Data through Buffer Modifications That Shift Adduct Mass and Intensity

Annotation of untargeted high-resolution full-scan LC-MS metabolomics data remains challenging due to individual metabolites generating multiple LC-MS peaks arising from isotopes, adducts and fragments. Adduct annotation is a particular challenge, as the same mass difference between peaks can arise from adduct formation, fragmentation, or different biological species. To address this, here we describe a Buffer Modification Workflow (BMW), in which the same sample is run by LC-MS in both liquid chromatography solvent with 14 NH 3 -acetate buffer, and in solvent with the buffer modified with 15 NH 3 -formate. Buffer switching results in characteristic mass and signal intensity changes for adduct peaks, facilitating their annotation. This relatively simple and convenient chromatography modification annotated yeast metabolomics data with similar effectiveness to growing the yeast in isotope-labeled media. Application to mouse liver data annotated both known metabolite and known adduct peaks with 95% accuracy. Altogether, it identified 26% of ~ 27,000 liver LC-MS features as putative metabolites, of which ~ 2600 showed HMDB or KEGG database formula match. This workflow is well-suited to biological samples that cannot be readily isotope labeled, including plants, mammalian tissues, and tumors.

High Synteny and Sequence Identity between Genomes of Nitrosococcus oceani Strains Isolated from Different Oceanic Gyres Reveals Genome Economization and Autochthonous Clonal Evolution

The ammonia-oxidizing obligate aerobic chemolithoautotrophic gammaproteobacterium, Nitrosococcus oceani, is omnipresent in the world’s oceans and as such important to the global nitrogen cycle. We generated and compared high quality draft genome sequences of N. oceani strains isolated from the Northeast (AFC27) and Southeast (AFC132) Pacific Ocean and the coastal waters near Barbados at the interface between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean (C-27) with the recently published Draft Genome Sequence of N. oceani Strain NS58 (West Pacific Ocean) and the complete genome sequence of N. oceani C-107, the type strain (ATCC 19707) isolated from the open North Atlantic, with the goal to identify indicators for the evolutionary origin of the species. The genomes of strains C–107, NS58, C-27, and AFC27 were highly conserved in content and synteny, and these four genomes contained one nearly sequence-identical plasmid. The genome of strain AFC132 revealed the presence of genetic inventory unknown from other marine ammonia-oxidizing bacteria such as genes encoding NiFe-hydrogenase and a non-ribosomal peptide synthetase (NRPS)-like siderophore biosynthesis module. Comparative genome analysis in context with the literature suggests that AFC132 represents a metabolically more diverse ancestral lineage to the other strains with C-107 and NS58 potentially being the youngest. The results suggest that the N. oceani species evolved by genome economization characterized by the loss of genes encoding catabolic diversity while acquiring a higher redundancy in inventory dedicated to nitrogen catabolism, both of which could have been facilitated by their rich complements of CRISPR/Cas and Restriction Modification systems.

Aryl Diazonium-Assisted Amidoximation of MXene for Boosting Water Stability and Uranyl Sequestration via Electrochemical Sorption

Despite that two-dimensional transition metal carbides and carbonitrides (MXenes) are burgeoning candidates for remediation of environmental pollutants, the construction of robust functionalized MXene nanosheets with a high affinity for target heavy metal ions and radionuclides remains a challenge. Here we report the successful placement of amidoxime chelating groups on Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene surface by diazonium salt grafting. The introduction of amidoxime functional groups significantly enhances the selectivity of Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets for uranyl ions and also greatly improves their stability in aqueous solution, enabling efficient, rapid, and recyclable uranium extraction from aqueous solutions containing competitive metal ions. Benefiting from the excellent conductivity of MXenes, the amidoxime functionalized Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets show outstanding electrochemical performance such that when loaded on carbon cloth the application of an electric field increases the uranium adsorption capacity from 294 to 626 mg/g, outperforming all organic electrochemical sorption materials reported previously. Finally, the present work provides an effective strategy to functionalize MXene nanosheets with fundamental implications for the design of MXene-based selective electrosorption electrode materials.

Pressure-Induced Dimerization of C 60 at Room Temperature as Revealed by an In Situ Spectroscopy Study Using an Infrared Laser

Using in situ high-pressure Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction, the polymerization and structure evaluation of C 60 were studied up to 16 GPa at room temperature. The use of an 830 nm laser successfully eliminated the photo-polymerization of C 60 , which has interfered with the pressure effect in previous studies when a laser with a shorter wavelength was used as excitation. It was found that face-centered cubic (fcc) structured C 60 transformed into simple cubic (sc) C 60 due to the hint of free rotation for the C 60 at 0.3 GPa. The pressure-induced dimerization of C 60 was found to occur at about 3.2 GPa at room temperature. Our results suggest the benefit and importance of the choice of the infrared laser as the excitation laser.

Responses of gaseous sulfuric acid and particulate sulfate to reduced SO 2 concentration: A perspective from long-term measurements in Beijing

SO 2 concentration decreased rapidly in recent years in China due to the implementation of strict control policies by the government. Particulate sulfate ( p S O 4 2 - ) and gaseous H 2 SO 4 (SA) are two major products of SO 2 and they play important roles in the haze formation and new particle formation (NPF), respectively. We examined the change in p S O 4 2 - and SA concentrations in response to reduced SO 2 concentration using long-term measurement data in Beijing. Simulations from the Community Multiscale Air Quality model with a 2-D Volatility Basis Set (CMAQ/2D-VBS) were used for comparison. From 2013 to 2018, SO 2 concentration in Beijing decreased by ~81% (from 9.1 ppb to 1.7 ppb). p S O 4 2 - concentration in submicrometer particles decreased by ~60% from 2012–2013 (monthly average of ~10 μg·m - 3 ) to 2018–2019 (monthly average of ~4 μg·m - 3 ). Accordingly, the fraction of p S O 4 2 - in these particles decreased from 20–30% to <10%. Increased sulfur oxidation ratio was observed both in the measurements and the CMAQ/2D-VBS simulations. Despite the reduction in SO 2 concentration, there was no obvious decrease in SA concentration based on data from several measuring periods from 2008 to 2019. This was supported by the increased SA:SO 2 ratio with reduced SO 2 concentration and condensation sink. NPF frequency in Beijing between 2004 and 2019 remains relatively constant. Finally, this constant NPF frequency is consistent with the relatively stable SA concentration in Beijing, while different from some other cities where NPF frequency was reported to decrease with decreased SO 2 concentrations.

Effects of Postweld Heat Treatment on Microstructure and Properties of Laser-Welded Ti-24Al-15Nb Alloy Joint

The microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of laser-welded joints of Ti-24Al-15Nb alloy under different postweld heat treatment (PWHT) conditions were systematically investigated. The results show that the microstructure is very sensitive to PWHT temperatures. The weld zone consists of B2 and O phases after PWHT. With the PWHT temperatures increasing from 850 to 1000 °C, the amount of O phase decreases gradually, while the grains of O precipitates become coarser. After PWHT, there are some thin acicular O precipitates in heat-affected zone (HAZ), and the decomposition of α{sub 2}-phase caused by niobium diffusion can be observed in the HAZ. The PWHT can significantly increase the microhardness of joints, resulting from O phase precipitation hardening effect. The tensile strength and elongation of joints can be remarkably improved after PWHT, which was closely related to the strengthening effect of O precipitates and slip transmission between O and B2 phases. In addition, the results indicate that the best mechanical properties can be achieved only when the number and size of O phase and B2 phase are the best match.

SOX4 is activated by C-MYC in prostate cancer

Although MYC proto-oncogene (C-MYC) amplification has been consistently reported to be a potential marker for prostate cancer (PCa) progression and prognosis, the clinicopathological and prognostic significance of C-MYC protein expression remains controversial. Overexpression of SOX4 has been shown to play important roles in multiple cancers including PCa. However, the link between these two critical genetic aberrations is unclear. In the current study, we showed that C-MYC was overexpressed in 16.2% (17/105) of Chinese patients with localized PCa. Overexpression of C-MYC was significantly associated with high Gleason scores (P = 0.012) and high Ki67 labeling index (P = 0.005). C-MYC overexpression was correlated with cancer-related mortality and suggested to be an unfavorable prognostic factor in Chinese PCa patients (P = 0.018). Overexpression of C-MYC is associated with SOX4 overexpression in PCa tissues. Notably, SOX4 is a direct target gene of C-MYC; C-MYC activates SOX4 expression via binding to its promoter. In addition, Co-IP analysis demonstrated a physical interaction between C-MYC and SOX4 protein in PCa cells. Clinically, C-MYC+/SOX4+ characterized poor prognosis in a subset of PCa patients. In total, C-MYC overexpression may contribute to PCa progression by activating SOX4. Our findings highlight an important role of C-MYC/SOX4 in PCa progression in a subset of PCa patients.

Tuning the Photoresponse of Nano-Heterojunction: Pressure-Induced Inverse Photoconductance in Functionalized WO 3 Nanocuboids

Inverse photoconductivity (IPC) is a unique photoresponse behavior that exists in few photoconductors in which electrical conductivity decreases with irradiation, and has great potential applications in the development of photonic devices and nonvolatile memories with low power consumption. However, it is still challenging to design and achieve IPC in most materials of interest. In this study, pressure-driven photoconductivity is investigated in n-type WO3 nanocuboids functionalized with p-type CuO nanoparticles under visible illumination and an interesting pressure-induced IPC accompanying a structural phase transition is found. Native and structural distortion induced oxygen vacancies assist the charge carrier trapping and favor the persistent positive photoconductivity beyond 6.4 GPa. The change in photoconductivity is mainly related to a phase transition and the associated changes in the bandgap, the trapping of charge carriers, the WO6 octahedral distortion, and the electron–hole pair recombination process. A unique reversible transition from positive to inverse photoconductivity is observed during compression and decompression. The origin of the IPC is intimately connected to the depletion of the conduction channels by electron trapping and the chromic property of WO3. This synergistic rationale may afford a simple and powerful method to improve the optomechanical performance of any hybrid material.
