Regime-Dependence of Nocturnal Nitrate Formation via N 2 O 5 Hydrolysis and Its Implication for Mitigating Nitrate Pollution

The heterogeneous hydrolysis of dinitrogen pentoxide (N 2 O 5 ) is an important pathway in nitrate formation; however, its formation rate and relative contribution to total particulate nitrate (pNO 3 - ) are highly variable. Here we report that nocturnal pNO 3 - formation via N 2 O 5 hydrolysis is dependent on the regime defined by the ratio of NO 2 to O 3 . Nocturnal pNO 3 - formation via N 2 O 5 hydrolysis is suppressed in an O 3 -limited regime but enhanced in a NO 2 -limited regime. The results have crucial implications for effective control of nitrate pollution in the future. An exclusive decrease in NO 2 will decrease nocturnal pNO 3 - formation in a NO 2 -limited regime but may be less effective or even increase nocturnal pNO 3 - formation in an O 3 -limited regime.

Effects of penta‐coordinated Al 3+ sites and Ni defective sites on Ni/ Al 2 O 3 for CO methanation

Abstract Engineering sophisticated structure of Al 2 O 3 and controlling the structure of counterpart metal active sites remain challenges to achieve a high catalytic‐performance in heterogeneous catalysis. Herein, we present a confinement strategy to stabilize homogeneous Ni by penta‐coordinated Al 3+ anchoring sites in Al 2 O 3 . This approach is involved in using a metal–organic framework as host to load Ni 2+ ions, by the aim of producing a confined Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalyst after a standard calcination. Metal–support interaction between Ni and Al 2 O 3 was tailored to be medium to avoid the formation of inactive NiAl 2 O 4 , which favors the generation of more available Ni active sites accessible to the reactants. The resultant Ni/Al 2 O 3 exhibited superior catalytic performance in comparison with the control Ni/Al 2 O 3 in CO methanation owing to the presence of defective sites on sufficient Ni 0 surface. Furthermore, the presence of oxygen vacancies on Al 2 O 3 and hydrogen spillover contributed toward excellent coke resistance properties in the reaction.

Suppressing electrolyte-lithium metal reactivity via Li + -desolvation in uniform nano-porous separator

Lithium reactivity with electrolytes leads to their continuous consumption and dendrite growth, which constitute major obstacles to harnessing the tremendous energy of lithium-metal anode in a reversible manner. Considerable attention has been focused on inhibiting dendrite via interface and electrolyte engineering, while admitting electrolyte-lithium metal reactivity as a thermodynamic inevitability. Here, we report the effective suppression of such reactivity through a nano-porous separator. Calculation assisted by diversified characterizations reveals that the separator partially desolvates Li + in confinement created by its uniform nanopores, and deactivates solvents for electrochemical reduction before Li 0 -deposition occurs. The consequence of such deactivation is realizing dendrite-free lithium-metal electrode, which even retaining its metallic lustre after long-term cycling in both Li-symmetric cell and high-voltage Li-metal battery with LiNi 0.6 Mn 0.2 Co 0.2 O 2 as cathode. The discovery that a nano-structured separator alters both bulk and interfacial behaviors of electrolytes points us toward a new direction to harness lithium-metal as the most promising anode.

Near-Surface Warming Reduces Dew Frequency in China

Long-term (1961-2010) observations of dew data collected at 597 stations over China show that dew frequency decreased by 5.2 days per decade due primarily to near-surface warming and associated decreases in relative humidity (RH). Moreover, the percentage decreasing rate of dew frequency in arid regions (precipitation PR < 400 mm yr -1 ) are larger than that in humid regions (PR ≥ 800 mm yr -1 ). Compared with the 1960s, the mean dew frequency in the 2000s decreased by 28%, 40%, 50% in humid, semi-humid (400 ≤ PR<800 mm yr -1 ), and arid regions, respectively. Surface warming is larger in arid regions in northwestern China than its humid and semi-humid regions during recent global warming, which leads to larger decreases in surface RH and makes dew events less likely. Here, since dew contributes significantly to surface water balance in arid regions, the large decreases in dew frequency may contribute to "the drier getting drier" response to global warming over arid regions.
