The potential for New Mexico basalts to sequester CO2 with a focus on critical element mobility

This study investigates the potential for New Mexico basalts to serve as geologic CO₂ sequestration media through mineral carbonation. Batch-type experiments were conducted using crushed basalts from the Carrizozo and Taos regions at low PCO₂ (0.7–2 bar) and temperatures up to 40°C over 180 days. The experiments evaluated the kinetics of CO₂-water-rock interaction, cation release, and critical element mobility (Cu, Ni, Co, Zn). Solid and fluid samples were analyzed using SEM, EMPA, ICP-OES, and ICP-MS, and geochemical modeling was performed with GEM-Selektor and PHREEQC. Results indicated that up to 80% of the injected CO₂ was mineralized within 100 days, forming secondary carbonates such as siderite and ankerite. Additionally, significant mobilization of critical metals was observed, which has implications for resource recovery and mine-waste valorization in future CO₂ sequestration projects.

The potential for New Mexico basalts to sequester CO 2 with a focus on critical element mobility

This study evaluates the potential of New Mexico basaltic rocks and mafic mine waste for CO₂ sequestration via mineral carbonation. Batch experiments up to 200 days at 40°C simulated CO₂-bearing fluid interactions with various crushed basaltic materials at different grain sizes. Results showed that 70–80% of injected CO₂ was mineralized, with the finest grain sizes showing the most rapid and effective drawdown. The experiments also assessed the mobility of critical metals (Cu, Ni, Zn, Co), revealing trends tied to mineral dissolution and secondary mineral formation. The findings support the dual potential of mine waste for CO₂ sequestration and critical element recovery, informing future carbon capture and resource upcycling strategies.

The CO2 mineralization potential of New Mexico basalts and associated critical element behavior and mobility.

This presentation reports on laboratory experiments assessing the carbon dioxide (CO₂) mineralization potential of New Mexico basalts, including trachybasalt and basalt lithologies. Using simulated groundwater and controlled conditions, the study evaluates the kinetics of CO₂ sequestration, mineral saturation indices, and secondary mineral formation. It also investigates the mobility of critical and trace elements such as Ni, Zn, Cu, and Li during basalt dissolution. Results indicate that New Mexico basalts can effectively sequester CO₂ through carbonate formation, with grain size and mineral composition influencing reaction rates and elemental behavior. These findings support the viability of geologic carbon storage in mafic volcanic terrains and inform strategies for critical element recovery.

Paragenetic controls on CO 2 -fluid-rock interaction and weakening in a macroporous-dominated sandstone

The injection and storage of anthropogenic CO 2 in the subsurface is being deployed as a climate change mitigation tool; however, diagenetic-paragenetic heterogeneity in sandstone reservoirs often contributes to interval specific chemomechanical changes that affect injection and can increase leakage risk.In this paper we address reservoir heterogeneities’ impact on chemomechanical changes in a macroporous-dominated lithofacies of Morrow B sandstone, a formation containing several diagenetically-distinct hydraulic facies while undergoing enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) sequestration. We performed three flow-through experiments using a CO 2 -charged or uncharged formation water combined with four indirect tensile strength tests per post-test sample. We then used the microstructure and paragenetic sequence to understand chemomechanical weakening with key observations as follows: dissolution of carbonates and feldspars changed porosity; increased permeability led to reclassifying each sample in a different hydraulic flow unit; decreased ultrasonic velocity; and did not lead to a loss of tensile strength. Tensile strength maintenance occurred due to the low abundance and minor dissolution of siderite, the stability of quartz, and the relative position of diagenetic ankerite within feldspar. This macroporous-dominated lithofacies is the primary reservoir for the Morrow B Sandstone, and is analogous to other porous sandstone reservoirs. It represents an end-member of a chemomechanically low-risk siliceous CO 2 sequestration and CO 2 -EOR reservoir.

Techno-economic life cycle assessment of CO 2 -EOR operations towards net negative emissions at farnsworth field unit

Optimizations of CO 2 Water Alternating Gas(WAG)- systems with multi-objectives of incremental recovery and maximization of CO 2 storage are challenging. Here, the incorporation of a total Greenhouse gas (GHG) life cycle assessment is mostly ignored leading to inaccurate estimation of overall net carbon emissions of their operations. In this study, the effect of a total GHG life cycle assessment on a multi-objective CO 2 -WAG optimization with integrated techno-economic assessment (TEA) which factors carbon tax credit is conducted. A life cycle assessment (LCA) was conducted utilizing a 20 -year optimized post history matched data from a high fidelity reservoir simulation model. Using data generated from the optimum result, a techno-economic life cycle analysis was further conducted. The first scenario classified as the base model had an estimated 81% of purchased CO 2 sequestered. The results through a comprehensive techno-economic LCA model yielded a net estimate of 73% of purchased CO 2 . The optimized forecasted model which considered key operational and reservoir factors such as WAG ratio, injection rates and periods, and well specification resulted in an improved sequestration of 92% of purchased CO 2 . However, this also dropped to 84% after taking it through LCA. These results clearly indicate a significant amount of net CO 2 is not accounted for when operations are not analyzed through LCA. From the LCA, direct flaring volumes of CO 2 , energy consumption and efficiency of unit equipment were noticed to be the major causes of these reductions. Considering ten main sources of energy as source of energy generation, a comparative techno-eco LCA was conducted. The results confirmed a lower net volume and NPV for energy sources with higher carbon footprints and vice versa. Thus, a total LCA of CO 2 -WAG greatly influences net storage factor of purchased CO 2 and hence project NPV where tax credit/incentives per ton of CO 2 sequestered is considered. Although operational conditions are optimized for best results, there are significant factors that leads to minimization of net storage factor. This study therefore provides an insightful information for optimizing CO 2 -WAG multi-objectives to achieve minimum GHG emission.

Exploration of advanced porous organic polymers as a platform for biomimetic catalysis and molecular recognition

Nature has long been a dominant source of inspiration in the area of chemistry, serving as prototypes for the design of materials with proficient performance. In this Feature article, we present our efforts to explore porous organic polymers (POPs) as a platform for the construction of biomimetic materials to enable new technologies to achieve efficient conversions and molecular recognition. For each aspect, we first present the chemical basis of nature, followed by depicting the principles and design strategies involved for functionalizing POPs along with a summary of critical requirements for materials, culminating in a demonstration of unique features of POPs. Our endeavours in using POPs to address the fundamental scientific problems related to biomimetic catalysis and adsorption are then illustrated to show their enormous potential and capabilities for applications ranging from concerted catalysis to radionuclide sequestration. To conclude, we present a personal perspective on the challenges and opportunities in this emerging field.
