Amorphous CeO 2 –Cu Heterostructure Enhances CO 2 Electroreduction to Multicarbon Alcohols

Electrochemical conversion of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) gas to value-added chemicals such as multicarbon (C 2+ ) alcohols is a promising and attractive decarbonization strategy. However, there are tremendous challenges in tuning the intrinsic activity and selectivity of the catalysts to produce C 2+ alcohols. In this work, we prepared a CeO 2 –Cu composite catalyst via a combination of metallurgy and dealloying method. The interfacial sites of amorphous CeO 2 –Cu heterostructure improve the adsorption of key reaction intermediates *CO and promote the C–C coupling. Significantly, they also stabilize *CH 2 CHO at the bifurcation step, steering the reaction pathway toward the formation of C 2+ alcohols over ethylene. The CeO 2 –Cu catalyst achieves a remarkable faradaic efficiency of 32.9% ± 2.6% for C 2+ alcohols at -0.6 V vs RHE. Overall, this work demonstrates an effective strategy of improving the intrinsic activity and selectivity of the Cu-based catalysts for the generation of C 2+ alcohols.

Cu 2 O/CuS Nanocomposites Show Excellent Selectivity and Stability for Formate Generation via Electrochemical Reduction of Carbon Dioxide

Formate is an important value-added chemical that can be produced via electrochemical CO 2 reduction reactions (CO 2 RR). Cu 2 O-based catalysts have previously demonstrated decent activity for formate generation; however, they often suffer from poor electrochemical stability under reductive conditions. Here, in this paper, we report a new Cu 2 O/CuS composite catalyst that simultaneously achieves an excellent faradaic efficiency of 67.6% and a large partial current density of 15.3 mA/cm 2 at –0.9 V vs RHE for formate. Importantly, it maintains an average faradaic efficiency of 62.9% for at least 30 h at the same potential. The catalytic selectivity and stability for formate production outperform other Cu, CuS, and Cu 2 O catalysts.

Periodic Porous 3D Electrodes Mitigate Gas Bubble Traffic during Alkaline Water Electrolysis at High Current Densities

We report alkaline water electrolysis at high current densities is plagued by gas bubble generation and trapping in stochastic porous electrodes (e.g., Ni foams), which causes a significant reduction in the number of electrolyte accessible catalyst active sites. Here, 3D printed Ni (3DPNi) electrodes with highly controlled, periodic structures are reported that suppress gas bubble coalescence, jamming, and trapping and, hence, result in rapid bubble release. The 3DPNi electrodes decorated with carbon-doped NiO achieve a high current density of 1000 mA cm -2 in 1.0 m KOH electrolyte at hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction overpotentials of 245 and 425 mV, respectively. This work demonstrates a new approach to the deterministic design of 3D electrodes to facilitate rapid bubble transport and release to enhance the total electrode catalytic activity at commercially relevant current densities.

Carbon doping switching on the hydrogen adsorption activity of NiO for hydrogen evolution reaction

Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is more sluggish in alkaline than in acidic media because of the additional energy required for water dissociation. Numerous catalysts, including NiO, that offer active sites for water dissociation have been extensively investigated. Yet, the overall HER performance of NiO is still limited by lacking favorable H adsorption sites. Here we show a strategy to activate NiO through carbon doping, which creates under-coordinated Ni sites favorable for H adsorption. DFT calculations reveal that carbon dopant decreases the energy barrier of Heyrovsky step from 1.17 eV to 0.81 eV, suggesting the carbon also serves as a hot-spot for the dissociation of water molecules in water-alkali HER. As a result, the carbon doped NiO catalyst achieves an ultralow overpotential of 27 mV at 10 mA cm -2 , and a low Tafel slope of 36 mV dec -1 , representing the best performance among the state-of-the-art NiO catalysts.
