Advanced Porous Materials as Designer Platforms for Sequestering Radionuclide Pertechnetate

Technetium-99 ( 99 Tc), predominantly present as pertechnetate ( 99 TcO 4 – ), is a challenging contaminant in nuclear waste from artificial nuclear fission. The selective removal of 99 TcO 4 – from nuclear waste and contaminated groundwater is complex due to (i) the acidic and intricate nature of high-level liquid wastes; (ii) the highly alkaline environment in low-activity level tank wastes, such as those at Hanford, and in high-level wastes at locations like Savannah River; and (iii) the potential for 99 TcO 4 – to leak into groundwater, risking severe water pollution due to its high mobility. This Review focuses on recent developments in advanced porous materials, including metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and their amorphous counterparts, porous organic polymers (POPs). These materials have demonstrated exceptional effectiveness in adsorbing 99 TcO 4 – and similar oxyanions. We comprehensively review the adsorption mechanisms of these anions with the adsorbents, employing macroscopic batch/column experiments, microscopic spectroscopic analyses, and theoretical calculations. In conclusion, we present our perspectives on potential future research directions, aiming to overcome current challenges and explore new opportunities in this area. Our goal is to encourage further research into the development of advanced porous materials for efficient 99 TcO 4 – management.

Ultrafiltration separation of Am(VI)-polyoxometalate from lanthanides

Partitioning of americium from lanthanides (Ln) present in used nuclear fuel plays a key role in the sustainable development of nuclear energy. This task is extremely challenging because thermodynamically stable Am(III) and Ln(III) ions have nearly identical ionic radii and coordination chemistry. Oxidization of Am(III) to Am(VI) produces AmO 2 2+ ions distinct with Ln(III) ions, which has the potential to facilitate separations in principle. However, the rapid reduction of Am(VI) back to Am(III) by radiolysis products and organic reagents required for the traditional separation protocols including solvent and solid extractions hampers practical redox-based separations. Herein, we report a nanoscale polyoxometalate (POM) cluster with a vacancy site compatible with the selective coordination of hexavalent actinides ( 238 U, 237 Np, 242 Pu and 243 Am) over trivalent lanthanides in nitric acid media. To our knowledge, this cluster is the most stable Am(VI) species in aqueous media observed so far. Ultrafiltration-based separation of nanoscale Am(VI)-POM clusters from hydrated lanthanide ions by commercially available, fine-pored membranes enables the development of a once-through americium/lanthanide separation strategy that is highly efficient and rapid, does not involve any organic components and requires minimal energy input.

99 TcO 4 - removal from legacy defense nuclear waste by an alkaline-stable 2D cationic metal organic framework

Removal of 99 TcO 4 - from legacy defense nuclear tank waste at Savannah River Site is highly desirable for the purpose of nuclear safety and environmental protection, but currently not achievable given the extreme conditions including high alkalinity, high ionic strength, and strong radiation field. Herein, we present a potential solution to this long-term issue by developing a two-dimensional cationic metal organic framework SCU-103, showing ultrahigh stability in alkaline aqueous media and great resistance to both β and γ radiation. More importantly, it is very effective for 99 TcO 4 - separation from aqueous media as demonstrated by fast exchange kinetics, high sorption capacity, and superior selectivity, leading to the successful removal of 99 TcO 4 - from actual Savannah River Site high level tank waste for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. In addition, the uptake mechanism is comprehensively elucidated by molecular dynamics simulation and density functional theory calculation, showing a unique chemical recognition of anions with low charge density.

Metal-Organic Framework Glasses as Rad Contaminant Sequesters and Nuclear Waste Forms

Remediation of Tc remains an unresolved problem at SRS and other DOE sites. The objective of this project was to develop novel metal organic framework (MOF) glasses for radioactive contaminant sequestration and stabilization from aqueous media. During FY20, we synthesized, characterized and evaluated additional cetyltrimethylcimmonium bromide (CTAB)-functionalized and F - , Cl - , I - , CF 3 SO 3 - exchanged MIL-101-Cr samples. MIL-10l-Cr-NO 3 -CTAB was demonstrated to have high ReO 4 - removed capacity (139 mg/g sorbent) from artificial groundwater (AGW). Re chemical specicition and binding mechanism on MIL-101-CTAB were also studied by synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy. ReO 4 - was demonstrated as being in the pore structure with slightly larger Re-O bond distances than those in NciReO 4 and binding with the positively charged sites of CTAB. In addition, a new Ni-TIPA MOF was demonstrated to be very stable, selective and effective for TcO 4 - removed from the SRS tank waste stream (~90% removed). The Ni-TIPA MOF sample containing ReO 4 - was prepared and shipped/planned for vitrification studies by a high-pressure technique. This research may provide a highly applicable platform for solving critical DOE and industrial problems related to nuclear environmental stewardship and nuclear power production.

Two-Dimensional Uranyl Borates: From Conventional to Extreme Synthetic Conditions: Two-Dimensional Uranyl Borates: From Conventional to Extreme Synthetic Conditions

A systematic investigation of uranyl borates under different synthetic conditions resulted in five new 2D compounds, namely, (H 3 O)[(UO 2 )(BO 3 )], Li[(UO 2 )(BO 3 )] · (H 2 O), α-K 4 [(UO 2 ) 5 (BO 3 ) 2 O 4 ], β-K 4 [(UO 2 ) 5 (BO 3 ) 2 O 4 ] and K 2.5 [(UO 2 ) 5 (BO 3 ) 2 O 2.5 (OH) 1.5 ] · (H 2 O) 2.5 . (H 3 O)[(UO 2 )(BO 3 )] and Li[(UO 2 )(BO 3 )] · (H 2 O) were obtained from hydrothermal reactions at 220 °C using the same mineralizer. Both materials possess the uranophane sheet topology with different symmetry of the unit cells. In the structure of (H 3 O)[(UO 2 )(BO 3 )] and Li[(UO 2 )(BO 3 )] · (H 2 O), UO 7 pentagonal bipyramids share edges and vertexes with four BO 3 planar triangles. α-K 4 [(UO 2 ) 5 (BO 3 ) 2 O 4 ] and β-K 4 [(UO 2 ) 5 (BO 3 ) 2 O 4 ] are polytypes. α-K 4 [(UO 2 ) 5 (BO 3 ) 2 O 4 ] was synthesized from a high-temperature solid-state reaction under ambient pressure; whereas β-K 4 [(UO 2 ) 5 (BO 3 ) 2 O 4 ] was obtained from a high-temperature/high-pressure (HT/HP) reaction. Both structures have an identical anion topology, but β-K 4 [(UO 2 ) 5 (BO 3 ) 2 O 4 ] crystallizes in space group with higher symmetry. In K 2.5 [(UO 2 ) 5 (BO 3 ) 2 O 2.5 (OH) 1.5 ] · (H 2 O) 2.5 , which was obtained from a hydrothermal reaction, UO 7 polyhedra share vertexes and edges with two independent BO 3 triangles, forming the most complex uranyl borate layers among all five compounds. The different synthetic routes, novel topologies, thermal behavior and Raman spectra are discussed.
