Controlling single rare earth ion emission in an electro-optical nanocavity

Abstract Rare earth emitters enable critical quantum resources including spin qubits, single photon sources, and quantum memories. Yet, probing of single ions remains challenging due to low emission rate of their intra-4 f optical transitions. One feasible approach is through Purcell-enhanced emission in optical cavities. The ability to modulate cavity-ion coupling in real-time will further elevate the capacity of such systems. Here, we demonstrate direct control of single ion emission by embedding erbium dopants in an electro-optically active photonic crystal cavity patterned from thin-film lithium niobate. Purcell factor over 170 enables single ion detection, which is verified by second-order autocorrelation measurement. Dynamic control of emission rate is realized by leveraging electro-optic tuning of resonance frequency. Using this feature, storage, and retrieval of single ion excitation is further demonstrated, without perturbing the emission characteristics. These results promise new opportunities for controllable single-photon sources and efficient spin-photon interfaces.

High-Cooperativity Coupling of Rare-Earth Spins to a Planar Superconducting Resonator

The interfacing of a superconducting microwave resonator with rare-earth-doped crystals presents a promising hybrid quantum system for applications including spin-assisted transducers and memories. The coupling strength between the spins of the rare-earth ions and the microwave photons is characterized by the cooperativity. Here, we report an ultrahigh cooperativity of C~650 between rare-earth spins and a planar superconducting microwave resonator that features a highly uniform magnetic field for harnessing the strong anisotropic coupling strength of erbium-doped yttrium orthosilicate. This cooperativity rivals that from a bulk dielectric resonator and may pave a path for efficient coupling of spins with microwave photons on an integrated platform.

Er : Li Nb O 3 with High Optical Coherence Enabling Optical Thickness Control

Integrated photonics capable of incorporating rare-earth ions with high optical coherence is desirable for realizing efficient quantum transducers, compact quantum memories, and hybrid quantum systems. Here we describe a photonic platform based on the SmartCut erbium-doped lithium niobate thin film, and explore its stable optical transitions at telecom wavelength in a dilution refrigerator. Optical coherence time of up to 180μs, rivaling the value of bulk crystals, is achieved in optical ridge waveguides and ring resonators. With this integrated platform, we demonstrate tunable light-ion interaction and flexible control of optical thickness by exploiting long waveguides, whose lengths are in principle variable. This unique ability to obtain high optical density using low-concentration ions further leads to the observation of multiecho pulse trains in centimeter-long waveguides. Our results establish a promising photonic platform for quantum information processing with rare-earth ions.

Monolayer Sc 2 CF 2 as a Potential Selective and Sensitive NO 2 Sensor: Insight from First-Principles Calculations

Two-dimensional materials with excellent surface–volume ratios and massive reaction sites recently have been receiving attention for gas sensing. With first-principles calculations, we explored the performance of monolayer Sc 2 CF 2 as a gas sensor. We investigated how molecule adsorption affects its electronic structure and optical properties. It is found that a large charge transfer quantity happens between Sc 2 CF 2 and NO 2 , which results from the fact that the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of NO 2 is below the valence band maximum (VBM) of Sc 2 CF 2 . Moreover, the MD simulation shows that NO 2 can adsorb on the Sc 2 CF 2 surface stably at room temperature. We explored the effect of biaxial strain on the adsorption energy and charge transfer quantity of each system, and the results show that the biaxial strain can enhance both the adsorption energy and charge transfer quantity of the NO 2 system and thus can improve the sensitivity of Sc 2 CF 2 in detecting the NO 2 molecule. Furthermore, we investigated the adsorption behavior and charge transfer of polar polyatomic molecules at the Sc 2 CF 2 surface with h-BN as a substrate, and the results demonstrate that the h-BN substrate can hardly modify the main results. Our result predicts that Sc 2 CF 2 can be a promising selective and sensitive sensor to detect the NO 2 molecule, and could also give a theoretical guide for other terminated MXenes used for gas sensors or detectors.

Bidirectional interconversion of microwave and light with thin-film lithium niobate

Abstract Superconducting cavity electro-optics presents a promising route to coherently convert microwave and optical photons and distribute quantum entanglement between superconducting circuits over long-distance. Strong Pockels nonlinearity and high-performance optical cavity are the prerequisites for high conversion efficiency. Thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) offers these desired characteristics. Despite significant recent progresses, only unidirectional conversion with efficiencies on the order of 10 −5 has been realized. In this article, we demonstrate the bidirectional electro-optic conversion in TFLN-superconductor hybrid system, with conversion efficiency improved by more than three orders of magnitude. Our air-clad device architecture boosts the sustainable intracavity pump power at cryogenic temperatures by suppressing the prominent photorefractive effect that limits cryogenic performance of TFLN, and reaches an efficiency of 1.02% (internal efficiency of 15.2%). This work firmly establishes the TFLN-superconductor hybrid EO system as a highly competitive transduction platform for future quantum network applications.

Photonic integration of Er 3+ :Y 2 SiO 5 with thin-film lithium niobate by flip chip bonding

Rare earth ions are known as promising candidates for building quantum light-matter interface. However, tunable photonic cavity access to rare earth ions in their desired host crystal remains challenging. Here, we demonstrate the integration of erbium doped yttrium orthosilicate (Er 3+ :Y 2 SiO 5 ) with thin-film lithium niobate photonic circuit by plasma-activated direct flip chip bonding. Resonant coupling to erbium ions is realized by on-chip electro-optically tuned high Q lithium niobate micro-ring resonators. Fluorescence and absorption of erbium ions at 1536.48 nm are measured in the waveguides, while the collective ion-cavity cooperativity with micro-ring resonators is assessed to be 0.36. This work presents a versatile scheme for future rare earth ion integrated quantum devices.
