Phonon modes and electron–phonon coupling at the FeSe/SrTiO 3 interface

The remarkable increase in superconducting transition temperature (T c ) observed at the interface of one-unit-cell FeSe films on SrTiO3 substrates (1 uc FeSe/STO) has attracted considerable research into the interface effects. Although this high T c is thought to be associated with electron-phonon coupling (EPC), the microscopic coupling mechanism and its role in the superconductivity remain elusive. Here we use momentum-selective high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy to atomically resolve the phonons at the FeSe/STO interface. We uncover new optical phonon modes, coupling strongly with electrons, in the energy range of 75-99 meV. These modes are characterized by out-of-plane vibrations of oxygen atoms in the interfacial double-TiO x layer and the apical oxygens in STO. Our results also demonstrate that the EPC strength and superconducting gap of 1 uc FeSe/STO are closely related to the interlayer spacing between FeSe and the TiOx terminated STO. These findings shed light on the microscopic origin of the interfacial EPC and provide insights into achieving large and consistent T c enhancement in FeSe/STO and potentially other superconducting systems.

Correlations of multiscale structural evolution and homogeneous flows in metallic glass ribbons

Studying the flow behavior is critical to understand the deformation mechanism of amorphous solids. However, detecting the basic flow events in amorphous solids is challenging. Here, by simultaneous SAXS/WAXS, elementary flow carriers in wound metallic glasses are identified from flow-induced structural heterogeneities with a radius of gyration of 2.5~3.5 nm. Their size increases and morphology changes from sphere-like to rod-like under flow. Moreover, the atomic structure exhibits an unusual change to a more disordered state during winding/annealing at the temperature of ~0.8 T g . This work provides an atomic-to-nanoscale description of the flow carriers of amorphous solids during deformation. Impact Statement The elementary flow carriers in metallic glasses have a radius of gyration of 2.5~3.5 nm. During flow, their size increases and morphology changes from sphere-like to rod-like.

Atomic dynamics of metallic glass melts La 50 Ni 15 Al 35 and Ce 70 Cu 19 Al 11 studied by quasielastic neutron scattering

By employing quasielastic neutron scattering, we studied the atomic-scale relaxation dynamics and transport mechanism of La 50 Ni 15 Al 35 and Ce 70 Cu 19 Al 11 metallic glass melts in the temperature range of > 200K above their liquidus temperatures. The results show that both liquids exhibit stretched exponential relaxation and Arrhenius-type temperature dependence of the effective diffusion coefficient. The La 50 Ni 15 Al 35 melt exhibits an activation energy of 0.545 ± 0.008 eV and a stretching exponent ~0.77 to 0.86 in the studied temperature range; no change of activation energy, as suggested in previous reports, associated with liquid-liquid phase transition was observed. In contrast, the Ce 70 Cu 19 Al 11 melt exhibits larger diffusivity with a much smaller activation energy of 0.201±0.003eV and a smaller stretching exponent ~0.51 to 0.60, suggestive of more heterogeneous dynamics.

The Software Correlator of the Chinese VLBI Network

The software correlator of the Chinese VLBI Network (CVN) has played an irreplaceable role in the CVN routine data processing, e.g., in the Chinese lunar exploration project. This correlator will be upgraded to process geodetic and astronomical observation data. In the future, with several new stations joining the network, CVN will carry out crustal movement observations, quick UT1 measurements, astrophysical observations, and deep space exploration activities. For the geodetic or astronomical observations, we need a wide-band 10-station correlator. For spacecraft tracking, a realtime and highly reliable correlator is essential. To meet the scientific and navigation requirements of CVN, two parallel software correlators in the multiprocessor environments are under development. A high speed, 10-station prototype correlator using the mixed Pthreads and MPI (Massage Passing Interface) parallel algorithm on a computer cluster platform is being developed. Another real-time software correlator for spacecraft tracking adopts the thread-parallel technology, and it runs on the SMP (Symmetric Multiple Processor) servers. Both correlators have the characteristic of flexible structure and scalability.
