Comparison of multi-stage air treatment process divided by the same temperature and enthalpy difference

The multi-stage air treatment system has been proposed recently, and lower grade chilled/hot water could be used and energy efficiency could be improved. However, it has not been studied which division method of air treatment processes has higher energy efficiency. In this study, the model to calculate the energy consumption of multi-stage air treatment process is introduced, and the effects of two division methods, i.e. multi-stage air treatment process divided by the same temperature difference (ST method) or same enthalpy difference (SE method) between inlet and outlet at each stage, under 9 different air inlet parameters in the 2-stage and 3-stage air treatment processes are analysed and compared. The results show that (1) the system energy consumption of the SE method is generally lower than that of the ST method; (2) there is generally a larger energy consumption reduction rate of SE method when the air relative humidity is 70% compared to relative humidity of 50% and 90%; (3) the difference between ST method and SE method is not great, so both methods can be used for the design of multi-stage treatment system although SE method is normally recommended.

Generation of selective single-mode guided waves by d 36 type piezoelectric wafer

In general, mixed modes and dispersion of guided wave occur at any excitation frequency, while single modes are needed for effective nondestructive evaluation of structures. In this work, we present an approach to generate a selective single-mode guided wave in plate-like structures by exploiting the unique directionality of the d 36 type piezoelectric wafer and the symmetry of fundamental guided wave modes. Specifically, we devise a unified fundamental shear horizontal (SH 0 ) wave/fundamental antisymmetric mode (A 0 ) wave directional transducer pair by attaching the d 36 type piezoelectric wafers back to back on the opposite sides of the plate to provide selective, directional single-mode guided waves for actuation and sensing. Originally, the d 36 -type piezoelectric wafer, poled and cut from the lead magnesium niobate-lead titanate crystal, produces a mixture of the in-plane SH 0 (symmetric) mode and out-of-plane A 0 (asymmetric) and S 0 (symmetric) modes. By applying the in-phase or out-of-phase applied electrical field to the coupled d 36 -type piezoelectric wafer pair, our devised approach generates selective single modes, SH 0 or A 0 , respectively, to propagate in the structure. We describe the theoretical development of our approach and conduct both numerical simulations and laboratory experiments for validations.

Designer membraneless organelles sequester native factors for control of cell behavior

Subcellular compartmentalization of macromolecules increases flux and prevents inhibitory interactions to control biochemical reactions. Inspired by this functionality, we sought to build designer compartments that function as hubs to regulate the flow of information through cellular control systems. Here we report a synthetic membraneless organelle platform to control endogenous cellular activities through sequestration and insulation of native proteins. We engineer and express a disordered protein scaffold to assemble micron size condensates and recruit endogenous clients via genomic tagging with high-affinity dimerization motifs. By relocalizing up to ninety percent of a targeted enzymes to synthetic condensates, we efficiently control cellular behaviors, including proliferation, division, and cytoskeletal organization. Further, we demonstrate multiple strategies for controlled cargo release from condensates to switch cells between functional states. These synthetic organelles offer a powerful and generalizable approach to modularly control cell decision-making in a variety of model systems with broad applications for cellular engineering.

RNA binding protein DAZAP1 promotes HCC progression and regulates ferroptosis by interacting with SLC7A11 mRNA

Highlights: • DAZAP1 effectively promotes HCC progression. • DAZAP1 negatively regulates ferroptosis in HCC cells. • DAZAP1 interacts with SLC7A11 mRNA, and positively regulates its stability. RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) closely regulate the whole lifecycle of most RNA molecules, from the very early stage of transcription to RNA decay. Dysregulation of RBPs significantly affects the fate of cancer-related transcripts. Therefore, it is imperative to fully understand the complicated RBP-RNA regulatory networks in malignant diseases and to explore novel therapeutic targets. The RBP DAZAP1 (deleted in azoospermia-associated protein 1), originally identified as an important protein in spermatogenesis, had rarely been studied in the context of carcinogenesis. The role of DAZAP1 in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) was unveiled in this study. The relative expression of DAZAP1 was significantly upregulated in HCC and was positively associated with several key malignant characteristics and poor postoperative survival in patients. DAZAP1 knockdown by small interfering RNA markedly inhibited HCC cell proliferation, migration and invasion. Furthermore, DAZAP1 significantly reduced cellular sensitivity to sorafenib (SF), which had been proven to be an inducer of ferroptosis by targeting the system Xc{sup −} (composed of a light chain, xCT/SLC7A11, and a heavy chain, 4F2 heavy chain). At the mechanistic level, DAZAP1 was identified as a potent inhibitor of ferroptosis and an efficient binding partner of SLC7A11 mRNA. Further study revealed that DAZAP1 interacted with the 3′UTR (untranslated region) of SLC7A11 mRNA and positively regulated its stability. In our work, we clarified novel functions of DAZAP1 and preliminarily revealed its underlying mechanism in ferroptosis, which may be conducive to the exploration of biomarkers and therapeutic targets in HCC patients.
