Photo-induced structural dynamics of o -nitrophenol by ultrafast electron diffraction

The photo-induced dynamics of o-nitrophenol, particularly its photolysis, has garnered significant scientific interest as a potential source of nitrous acid in the atmosphere. Although the photolysis products and preceding photo-induced electronic structure dynamics have been investigated extensively, the nuclear dynamics accompanying the non-radiative relaxation of o-nitrophenol on the ultrafast timescale, which include an intramolecular proton transfer step, have not been experimentally resolved. Herein, we present a direct observation of the ultrafast nuclear motions mediating photo-relaxation using ultrafast electron diffraction. Here, this work spatiotemporally resolves the loss of planarity which enables access to a conical intersection between the first excited state and the ground state after the proton transfer step, on the femtosecond timescale and with sub-Angstrom resolution. Our observations, supported by ab initio multiple spawning simulations, provide new insights into the proton transfer mediated relaxation mechanism in o-nitrophenol.

Plasma heating by electron cyclotron wave and the temperature effects on lower hybrid current drive on EAST

This paper presents the progress in the long—pulse operation of the electron cyclotron (EC) system and the achievements in high—electron temperature plasmas by the combined EC and lower hybrid (LH) waves heating since the EC system was built in 2015. An electron temperature of up to 12 keV with a duration over 100 s was realized by the simultaneous heating of EC and LH waves at the line-averaged density ${\bar n_{\text{e}}}$ ~1.8 × 10 19 m –3 . The plasma heating effect strongly depends on the location of EC power deposition. H-mode plasmas with solely EC wave auxiliary heating have been obtained on EAST for the first time. These H-mode discharges show an enhanced confinement factor H 98(y,2) around 1.0, which is higher than the previous H-mode using LH power alone (Xu et al 2011 Nucl. Fusion 51 072001). The total heating power is very close to the threshold value for L–H transition according to the international tokamak scaling. In addition to the temperature effects inside the separatrix, higher electron temperature produced by EC wave is found to reduce the LH power loss in the scrape-off layer due to collisional absorption, which is beneficial to further increase the LH current drive efficiency. Ray-tracing/Fokker–Planck modeling results indicate that higher electron temperature can shorten the LH wave propagation on EAST in a multiple-pass regime, thus decreasing the collisional dissipation.

Effect of lattice excitations on transient near-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy

Here, time-dependent and constituent-specific spectral changes in soft near-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) of an [Fe/MgO] 8 metal/insulator heterostructure after laser excitation are analyzed at the O K-edge with picosecond time resolution. The oxygen absorption edge of the insulator features a uniform intensity decrease of the fine structure at elevated phononic temperatures, which can be quantified by a simple simulation and fitting procedure presented here. Combining XAS with ultrafast electron diffraction measurements and ab initio calculations demonstrates that the transient intensity changes in XAS can be assigned to a transient lattice temperature. Thus, the sensitivity of transient near-edge XAS to phonons is demonstrated.

Conformer-specific photochemistry imaged in real space and time

Conformation-dependent dynamics play an important role in organic chemistry syntheses such as electrocyclic reactions, as well as in biological processes such as protein folding. However, current time-resolved experimental methods struggle to distinguish conformers from each other, and conformational isomerism is usually analyzed through reactant and product distributions. Using a combination of mega–electron volt ultrafast electron diffraction and quantum wave packet simulations, Champenois et al. directly followed the photochemical electrocyclic ring opening of the molecule α-phellandrene with femtosecond time resolution and confirmed that the transformation of a specific molecular conformer follows the famous Woodward-Hoffmann rules. The proposed method is potentially a powerful tool to follow conformer specificity in various organic and biological systems in real time.

Imaging the short-lived hydroxyl-hydronium pair in ionized liquid water

The radiolysis of water is ubiquitous in nature and plays a critical role in numerous biochemical and technological applications. Although the elementary reaction pathways for the ionized water have been studied, the short-lived intermediate complex and structural dynamic response after the proton transfer reaction remain poorly understood. Here, using liquid-phase ultrafast electron diffraction technique to measure the intermolecular O··O and O··H bonds, we captured the short-lived radical-cation complex OH(H 3 O + ) that was formed within 140 femtoseconds through a direct oxygen-oxygen bond contraction and proton transfer, followed by the radical-cation pair dissociation and the subsequent structural relaxation of water within 250 femtoseconds. These measurements provide direct evidence of capturing this metastable radical-cation complex before separation, thereby improving our fundamental understanding of elementary reaction dynamics in ionized liquid water.

Fast attenuation of high-frequency acoustic waves in bicontinuous nanoporous gold

We studied the formation and attenuation of GHz elastic waves in free-standing nanoporous gold films by MeV ultrafast electron diffraction and finite element simulations. By tracing the evolution of the high frequency acoustic waves in time domain, we found that the bicontinuous nanoporous structure in nanoporous gold films results in three-dimensionally acoustic response with low coherence, leading to fast attenuation of the elastic waves in comparison with solid gold films. The morphologically dominated dynamics indicates the nanoporosity plays an important role in the high-frequency acoustic energy relaxation, which shines a light on the applications of dealloyed nanoporous materials in nanodevices and sensors as GHz and THz acoustic filters and dampers.
