Gibberellins promote polar auxin transport to regulate stem cell fate decisions in cambium

Vascular cambium contains bifacial stem cells, which produce secondary xylem to one side and secondary phloem to the other. However, how these fate decisions are regulated is unknown. Here we show that the positioning of an auxin signalling maximum within the cambium determines the fate of stem cell daughters. The position is modulated by gibberellin-regulated, PIN1-dependent polar auxin transport. Gibberellin treatment broadens auxin maximum from the xylem side of the cambium towards the phloem. As a result, xylem-side stem cell daughter preferentially differentiates into xylem, while phloem-side daughter retains stem cell identity. Occasionally, this broadening leads to direct specification of both daughters as xylem, and consequently, adjacent phloem-identity cell reverts to being stem cell. Conversely, reduced gibberellin levels favour specification of phloem-side stem cell daughter as phloem. Together, our data provide a mechanism by which gibberellin regulates the ratio of xylem and phloem production.

Early Results from GLASS-JWST. XI. Stellar Masses and Mass-to-light Ratio of z > 7 Galaxies

We exploit James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) NIRCam observations from the GLASS-JWST-Early Release Science program to investigate galaxy stellar masses at z > 7. We first show that JWST observations reduce the uncertainties on the stellar mass by a factor of at least 5–10, when compared with the highest-quality data sets available to date. We then study the UV mass-to-light ratio, finding that galaxies exhibit a a two orders of magnitude range of M / L UV values for a given luminosity, indicative of a broad variety of physical conditions and star formation histories. As a consequence, previous estimates of the cosmic stellar-mass density—based on an average correlation between UV luminosity and stellar mass—can be biased by as much as a factor of ~6. Our first exploration demonstrates that JWST represents a new era in our understanding of stellar masses at z > 7 and, therefore, of the growth of galaxies prior to cosmic reionization.

Local cation order and ferrimagnetism in compositionally complex spinel ferrites

We present an exploration of a family of compositionally complex cubic spinel ferrites featuring combinations of Mg, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Mn, and Zn cations, systematically investigating the average and local atomic structures, chemical short-range order, magnetic spin configurations, and magnetic properties. All compositions result in ferrimagnetic average structures with extremely similar local bonding environments; however, the samples display varying degrees of cation inversion and, therefore, differing apparent bulk magnetization. Additionally, first-order reversal curve analysis of the magnetic reversal behavior indicates varying degrees of magnetic ordering and interactions, including potentially local frustration. Finally, reverse Monte Carlo modeling of the spin orientation demonstrates a relationship between the degree of cation inversion and the spin collinearity. Collectively, these observations correlate with differences in synthesis procedures. This work provides a framework for understanding magnetic behavior reported for “high-entropy spinels,” revealing many are likely compositionally complex oxides with differing degrees of chemical short-range order—not meeting the community established criteria for high or medium entropy compounds. Moreover, this work highlights the importance of reporting complete sample processing histories and investigating local to long-range atomic arrangements when evaluating potential entropic mixing effects and assumed property correlations in high entropy materials.

Early Results from GLASS-JWST. II. NIRCam Extragalactic Imaging and Photometric Catalog

We present the reduced images and multiwavelength catalog of the first JWST NIRCam extragalactic observations from the GLASS Early Release Science Program, obtained as coordinated parallels of the NIRISS observations of the Abell 2744 cluster. Images in seven bands (F090W, F115W, F150W, F200W, F277W, F356W, and F444W) have been reduced using an augmented version of the official JWST pipeline; we discuss the procedures adopted to remove or mitigate defects in the raw images. We obtain a multiband catalog by means of forced aperture photometry on point-spread function (PSF)-matched images at the position of F444W-detected sources. The catalog is intended to enable early scientific investigations, and it is optimized for faint galaxies; it contains 6368 sources, with limiting magnitude 29.7 at 5 σ in F444W. We release both images and catalog in order to allow the community to become familiar with the JWST NIRCam data and evaluate their merit and limitations given the current level of knowledge of the instrument.

Design metastability in high-entropy alloys by tailoring unstable fault energies

Metastable alloys with transformation-/twinning-induced plasticity (TRIP/TWIP) can overcome the strength-ductility trade-off in structural materials. Originated from the development of traditional alloys, the intrinsic stacking fault energy (ISFE) has been applied to tailor TRIP/TWIP in high-entropy alloys (HEAs) but with limited quantitative success. Here, we demonstrate a strategy for designing metastable HEAs and validate its effectiveness by discovering seven alloys with experimentally observed metastability for TRIP/TWIP. We propose unstable fault energies as the more effective design metric and attribute the deformation mechanism of metastable face-centered cubic alloys to unstable martensite fault energy (UMFE)/unstable twin fault energy (UTFE) rather than ISFE. Among the studied HEAs and steels, the traditional ISFE criterion fails in more than half of the cases, while the UMFE/UTFE criterion accurately predicts the deformation mechanisms in all cases. The UMFE/UTFE criterion provides an effective paradigm for developing metastable alloys with TRIP/TWIP for an enhanced strength-ductility synergy.

Acetyl-CoA Synthesis Through a Bicyclic Carbon-Fixing Pathway in Gas-Fermenting Bacteria

Gas-fermenting acetogens can upgrade one-carbon (C1) compounds (such as CO2 and CO) to the two-carbon (C2) metabolite acetyl coenzyme A (CoA) and convert sugar feedstocks to acetyl-CoA with minimal CO2 emissions. Fulfilling the biosynthetic potential of these microbes requires overcoming challenges in pathway engineering. Here we design a synthetic acetyl-CoA bi-cycle-in addition to the natural carbon-fixing pathways-for C2 metabolite synthesis. This pathway produces an acetyl-CoA by fixation of two CO2 equivalents via three functional modules acting in sequence: carbon fixation, gluconeogenesis and non-oxidative glycolysis. The pathway was examined by in silico thermodynamic and kinetic analyses. The prototypic pathway was implemented in a syngas-fermenting organism, Clostridium ljungdahlii DSM 13528, by expressing a heterologous phosphoketolase that can work with other native enzymes in the host acetogen. The carbon conversion pathway is possible under various growth conditions and is independent of the Wood-Ljungdahl pathway for the valorization of H2 and CO2. This study reports the improvement of carbon conversion using a reductive acetyl-CoA bi-cycle and the potential impact of redox homoeostasis in the acetogenic host for industrial applications of gas fermentation.

Molecular Characterization of Water-Soluble Brown Carbon Chromophores in Snowpack from Northern Xinjiang, China

This study reports molecular-level characterization of brown carbon (BrC) attributed to water-soluble organic carbon in six snowpack samples collected from northern Xinjiang, China. Here, the molecular composition and light-absorbing properties of BrC chromophores were unraveled by application of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled to a photodiode array (PDA) detector and high-resolution mass spectrometry. The chromophores were classified into five major types, that is, (1) phenolic/lignin-derived compounds, (2) flavonoids, (3) nitroaromatics, (4) oxygenated aromatics, and (5) other chromophores. Identified chromophores account for ~23–64% of the total light absorption measured by the PDA detector in the wavelength range of 300–370 nm. In the representative samples from urban and remote areas, oxygenated aromatics and nitroaromatics dominate the absorption in the wavelengths below and above 320 nm, respectively. The highly polluted urban sample shows the most complex HPLC-PDA chromatogram, and more other chromophores contribute to the bulk absorption. Phenolic/ lignin-derived compounds are the most light-absorbing species in the soil-influenced sample. Chromophores in two remote samples exhibit ultraviolet–visible features distinct from other samples, which are attributed to flavonoids. Identification of individual chromophores and quantitative analysis of their optical properties are helpful for elucidating the roles of BrC in snow radiative balance and photochemistry.

Developmental changes in lignin composition are driven by both monolignol supply and laccase specificity

The factors controlling lignin composition remain unclear. Catechyl (C)–lignin is a homopolymer of caffeyl alcohol with unique properties as a biomaterial and precursor of industrial chemicals. The lignin synthesized in the seed coat of Cleome hassleriana switches from guaiacyl (G)– to C-lignin at around 12 to 14 days after pollination (DAP), associated with a rerouting of the monolignol pathway. Lack of synthesis of caffeyl alcohol limits C-lignin formation before around 12 DAP, but coniferyl alcohol is still synthesized and highly accumulated after 14 DAP. We propose a model in which, during C-lignin biosynthesis, caffeyl alcohol noncompetitively inhibits oxidation of coniferyl alcohol by cell wall laccases, a process that might limit movement of coniferyl alcohol to the apoplast. Developmental changes in both substrate availability and laccase specificity together account for the metabolic fates of G- and C-monolignols in the Cleome seed coat.

High-performance LiNi 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 O 2 cathode by nanoscale lithium sulfide coating via atomic layer deposition

The commercialization of nickel-rich LiNi 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 O 2 (NMC811) has been hindered by its continuous loss of practical capacity and reduction in average working voltage. To address these issues, surface modification has been well-recognized as an effective strategy. Different from the coatings reported in literature to date, in this work, we for the first time report a sulfide coating, amorphous Li 2 S via atomic layer deposition (ALD). Here, our study revealed that the conformal nano-Li 2 S coating shows exceptional protection over the NMC811 cathodes, accounting for the dramatically boosted capacity retention from ~11.6% to ~71% and the evidently mitigated voltage reduction from 0.39 to 0.18 V after 500 charge–discharge cycles. In addition, the Li 2 S coating remarkably improved the rate capability of the NMC811 cathode. Our investigation further revealed that all these beneficial effects of the ALD-deposited nano-Li 2 S coating lie in the following aspects: (i) maintain the mechanical integrity of the NMC811 electrode; (ii) stabilize the NMC electrode/electrolyte interface; and (iii) suppress the irreversible phase transition of NMC structure. Particularly, this study also has revealed that the nano-Li 2 S coating has played some unique role not associated with traditional non-sulfide coatings such as oxides. In this regard, we disclosed that the Li 2 S layer has reacted with the released O 2 from the NMC lattices, and thereby has dramatically mitigated electrolyte oxidation and electrode corrosion. Thus, this study is significant and has demonstrated that sulfides may be an important class of coating materials to tackle the issues of NMCs and other layered cathodes in lithium batteries.

Rare earth elements from waste

Rare earth elements (REEs) are critical materials in electronics and clean technologies. With the diminishing of easily accessible minerals for mining, the REE recovery from waste is an alternative toward a circular economy. Present methods for REE recovery suffer from lengthy purifications, low extractability, and high wastewater streams. Here, we report an ultrafast electrothermal process (~3000°C, ~1 s) based on flash Joule heating (FJH) for activating wastes to improve REE extractability. FJH thermally degrades or reduces the hard-to-dissolve REE species to components with high thermodynamic solubility, leading to ~2× increase in leachability and high recovery yields using diluted acid (e.g., 0.1 M HCl). The activation strategy is feasible for various wastes including coal fly ash, bauxite residue, and electronic waste. The rapid FJH process is energy-efficient with a low electrical energy consumption of 600 kWh ton –1 . The potential for this route to be rapidly scaled is outlined.

Determination of Location-Specific Solidification Cracking Susceptibility for a Mixed Dissimilar Alloy Processed by Wire-Arc Additive Manufacturing

Solidification cracking is a major obstacle when joining dissimilar alloys using additive manufacturing. In this work, location-specific solidification cracking susceptibility has been investigated using an integrated computational materials engineering (ICME) approach for a graded alloy formed by mixing P91 steel and Inconel 740H superalloy. An alloy mixture of 26 wt.% P91 and 74 wt.% Inconel 740H, with high configurational and total entropy, was fabricated using wire arc additive manufacturing. Microstructure characterization revealed intergranular solidification cracks in the FCC matrix, which increased in length along with the enrichment of Nb (~27 to 56 wt.%) and Cu (~87 wt.%) in the middle and top regions. DICTRA simulations to model location-specific solidification cracking susceptibility showed that the top region with the highest cooling rate (270 K/s) has the highest solidification cracking susceptibility in comparison with the middle and bottom regions. This is in good agreement with the experimentally observed varying crack length. From Scheil simulations, it was deduced that enrichment of Nb and Cu affected the solidification range as high as ~77%, in comparison with the matrix composition. The overall solidification cracking susceptibility and freezing range was highest for the 26 wt.% P91 alloy amongst the mixed compositions between P91 steel and 740H superalloy, proving that solidification characteristics play a major role in alloy design for additive manufacturing.

Atomic layer deposition of lithium zirconium oxides for the improved performance of lithium-ion batteries

Recently there has been increasing interest to develop lithium-containing films as solid-state electrolytes or surface coatings for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and related systems. Here, in this study, we for the first time investigated the thin film growth of lithium zirconium oxides (Li x Zr y O or LZOs) through combining two individual atomic layer deposition (ALD) processes of ZrO 2 and LiOH, i.e., sub-ALD of ZrO 2 and LiOH. We revealed that the hygroscopic nature of the LiOH component has a big impact on the growth of LZOs. We found that an increased temperature to 225 °C was more effective than an elongated purge to mitigate the adverse effects of physisorbed H 2 O. We further discovered that, during the resultant LZO super-ALD processes, the growth of sub-ALD LiOH has been promoted while the growth of sub-ALD ZrO 2 has been inhibited. In this study, a suite of instruments has been applied to characterize the LZO super-ALD processes and the resultant LZO films, including in situ quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Furthermore, we applied the resulting LZO films over LiNi 0.6 Mn 0.2 Co 0.2 O 2 (NMC622) cathodes in LIBs and demonstrated that the LZO coating films could evidently improve the lithium-ion insertion and extraction rates of the NMC622 electrodes up to 3.4 and 2.6 times, respectively. The LZO-coated NMC622 cathodes exhibited much better performance than the uncoated NMC622 ones.
