Simulation of the impact of particle recycling on the plasma in MPS-LD device based on the BOUT++ LPD module

A linear plasma device (LPD) module has been developed under the BOUT++ framework to simulate plasma transport in the MPS-LD. However, previously, the LPD module used a simplistic neutral particle model that only includes particle density and velocity, which prevents the full understanding of the plasma-neutrals interactions. In this work, we further optimize the neutral model by using a more complete neutral fluid model containing the continuity equation, momentum equation, and energy equation. The reactions such as charge exchange, excitation, and radiation collisions are included. Since the neutral particle source is mainly provided by particle recycling from the target, a particle recycling model is employed, which includes both fast reflection and slow thermal release. The upgraded LPD module is applied to simulate the argon (Ar) discharge experiment of MPS-LD, and the benchmark against experiment measurement and SOLPS-ITER simulation results are presented. Good agreements are obtained, showing the validation of the upgraded module. After that, the impact of particle recycling on Ar plasma is investigated. It is found that a higher recycling coefficient (R) promotes the achievement of high-density plasma at the target. In conclusion, the recycled Ar atoms change target plasma pressure as well as plasma-neutral collisions, which both contribute to plasma momentum loss, thus promoting the rollover of ion flux to the target.

Deformation Rate‐Adaptive Conducting Polymers and Composites

Abstract Materials are more easily damaged during accidents that involve rapid deformation. Here, a design strategy is described for electronic materials comprised of conducting polymers that defies this orthodox property, making their extensibility and toughness dynamically adaptive to deformation rates. This counterintuitive property is achieved through a morphology of interconnected nanoscopic core–shell micelles, where the chemical interactions are stronger within the shells than the cores. As a result, the interlinked shells retain material integrity under strain, while the rate of dissociation of the cores controls the extent of micelle elongation, which is a process that adapts to deformation rates. A prototype based on polyaniline shows a 7.5‐fold increase in ultimate elongation and a 163‐fold increase in toughness when deformed at increasing rates from 2.5 to 10 000% min −1 . This concept can be generalized to other conducting polymers and highly conductive composites to create “self‐protective” soft electronic materials with enhanced durability under dynamic movement or deformation.

Simulation of plasma transport in MPS-LD linear plasma device by using BOUT++

Here a linear plasma device (LPD) module based on the 2D transport module under the BOUT++ framework is developed in this paper to simulate plasma transport in the LPD. The LPD module includes three parts, i.e. magnetic field calculation, simulation mesh generation and plasma transport setup. The magnetic field is calculated with the circular current loop using the location and current information of each coil. The mesh generation code can produce a simulation mesh for LPD by employing the magnetic field. The plasma transport model is based on the reduced Braginskii equations, which consist of the continuity equation, momentum equation, and energy equation. The fluid neutral model is applied for neutral particle simulation. Deuterium (D) and helium (He) ions and atoms can be simulated by the model. The first attempt to simulate plasma transport in the new LPD, called multiple plasma simulation linear plasma device (MPS-LD), is presented using the developed model. The D plasma transport in the MPS-LD is simulated and benchmarked against the two-point model, showing the validation of the BOUT++ simulation. The effects of radial transport on the heat load to the target are studied, which illustrates the significant impact of the radial diffusivities $D_⟂$ and $\mathcal{X}_{⟂i,e}$ on the plasma. Moreover, the He impurity injection process during the discharge is studied with emphasis on plasma–impurity interactions. The simulation results show that He injection can reduce the plasma energy load to the target significantly, and the efficiency depends on the He source density and injection velocity. The present work provides an alternative and flexible simulation tool for plasma transport in LPDs.

Superhydrophobic Phosphonium Modified Robust 3D Covalent Organic Framework for Preferential Trapping of Charge Dispersed Oxoanionic Pollutants

Abstract Charge dispersed and less hydrophilic anionic pollutants are often difficult to be preferentially captured by common cationic framework materials. A gamma radiation modification approach is employed to anchor a superhydrophobic phosphonium‐containing coating on a robust crystalline 3D covalent organic framework (COF). By regulating the surface hydrophobicity, the prepared 3DCOF‐ g ‐VBPPh 3 Cl is endowed with a strong affinity for charge dispersed and less hydrophilic oxoanions, such as MnO 4 − , TcO 4 − and ReO 4 − , to surmount the Hofmeister bias, which much favors remediation of oxoanionic pollutants in complex aqueous systems. Batch and column experiments with 3DCOF‐g‐VBPPh 3 Cl in both tap water and simulated groundwater are performed, and rapid sequestration is achieved with removal efficacy up to 99.995%, record‐high distribution coefficient of 1.0 × 10 8 mL g −1 , and desirable priority over competing anions such as Cl − , SO 4 2− , HCO 3 − , and NO 3 − , confirming promise for remediation of charge dispersed anionic pollutants. Theoretical calculations reveal a mechanism of preferential capture based on electrostatic and dispersion interaction between charge dispersed anions and 3DCOF‐g‐VBPPh 3 Cl that effectively competes with solvation of the aqueous anions.

Synchrotron X-ray spectroscopic study of the antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic transition in Ni-doped FeRh epitaxial thin films

Here we investigate the change of magnetism and electronic structure across the antiferromagnetic (AFM)-ferromagnetic (FM) transition of Ni-doped FeRh epitaxial thin films by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES). The Rh L edge XMCD results indicate that the remnant FM phase at low temperature possesses smaller Rh moment than the normal FM phase which can undergo AFM-FM transition. The HAXPES results confirm an increase of Rh 4d density of state at the Fermi level and a possible "well-screened" state at the Ni 2p photoemission in the FM phase. FM fluctuation of the inter-site Fe-Fe exchange coupling within the AFM phase can be interpreted from the temperature dependence of the Fe 2p HAXPES results.

Active Optical Control with Machine Learning: A Proof of Concept for the Vera C. Rubin Observatory

Abstract The Active Optics System of the Vera C. Rubin Observatory (Rubin) uses information provided by four wave front sensors to determine deviations between the reconstructed wave front and the ideal wave front. The observed deviations are used to adjust the control parameters of the optical system to maintain image quality across the 3.°5 field of view. The baseline approach from the project is to obtain amplitudes of the Zernike polynomials describing the distorted wave front from out-of-focus images collected by the wave front sensors. These Zernike amplitudes are related via an “influence matrix” to the control parameters necessary to correct the wave front. In this paper, we use deep-learning methods to extract the control parameters directly from the images captured by the wave front sensors. Our neural net model uses anti-aliasing pooling to boost performance, and a domain-specific loss function to aid learning and generalization. The accuracy of the control parameters derived from our model exceeds Rubin requirements even in the presence of full-moon background levels and mis-centering of reference stars. Although the training process is time consuming, model evaluation requires only a few milliseconds. This low latency should allow for the correction of the optical configuration during the readout and slew interval between successive exposures.

Anomalous vortex liquid in charge-ordered cuprate superconductors

The interplay between charge order and d-wave superconductivity in high-T c cuprates remains an open question. While mounting evidence from spectroscopic probes indicates that charge order competes with superconductivity, to date little is known about the impact of charge order on charge transport in the mixed state, when vortices are present. Here we study the low-temperature electrical resistivity of three distinctly different cuprate families under intense magnetic fields, over a broad range of hole doping and current excitations. We find that the electronic transport in the doping regime where long-range charge order is known to be present is characterized by a nonohmic resistivity, the identifying feature of an anomalous vortex liquid. The field and temperature range in which this nonohmic behavior occurs indicates that the presence of long-range charge order is closely related to the emergence of this anomalous vortex liquid, near a vortex solid boundary that is defined by the excitation current in the T→0 limit. Our findings further suggest that this anomalous vortex liquid, a manifestation of fragile superconductivity with a suppressed critical current density, is ubiquitous in the high-field state of charge-ordered cuprates.

The JA‐responsive MYC2‐ BADH ‐ like transcriptional regulatory module in Poncirus trifoliata contributes to cold tolerance by modulation of glycine betaine biosynthesis

Summary Glycine betaine (GB) is known to accumulate in plants exposed to cold, but the underlying molecular mechanisms and associated regulatory network remain unclear. Here, we demonstrated that PtrMYC2 of Poncirus trifoliata integrates the jasmonic acid (JA) signal to modulate cold‐induced GB accumulation by directly regulating PtrBADH‐l , a betaine aldehyde dehydrogenase (BADH)‐like gene. PtrBADH‐l was identified based on transcriptome and expression analysis in P. trifoliata . Overexpression and VIGS (virus‐induced gene silencing)‐mediated knockdown showed that PtrBADH‐l plays a positive role in cold tolerance and GB synthesis. Yeast one‐hybrid library screening using PtrBADH‐l promoter as baits unraveled PtrMYC2 as an interacting candidate. PtrMYC2 was confirmed to directly bind to two G‐box cis ‐acting elements within PtrBADH‐l promoter and acts as a transcriptional activator. In addition, PtrMYC2 functions positively in cold tolerance through modulation of GB synthesis by regulating PtrBADH‐l expression. Interestingly, we found that GB accumulation under cold stress was JA‐dependent and that PtrMYC2 orchestrates JA‐mediated PtrBADH‐l upregulation and GB accumulation. This study sheds new light on the roles of MYC2 homolog in modulating GB synthesis. In particular, we propose a transcriptional regulatory module PtrMYC2‐PtrBADH‐l to advance the understanding of molecular mechanisms underlying the GB accumulation under cold stress.

Integrated Proteomic and Glycoproteomic Characterization of Human High-Grade Serous Ovarian Carcinoma

Many gene products exhibit great structural heterogeneity because of an array of modifications. These modifications are not directly encoded in the genomic template but often affect the functionality of proteins. Protein glycosylation plays a vital role in proper protein functions. However, the analysis of glycoproteins has been challenging compared with other protein modifications, such as phosphorylation. Here, we perform an integrated proteomic and glycoproteomic analysis of 83 prospectively collected high-grade serous ovarian carcinoma (HGSC) and 23 non-tumor tissues. Integration of the expression data from global proteomics and glycoproteomics reveals tumor-specific glycosylation, uncovers different glycosylation associated with three tumor clusters, and identifies glycosylation enzymes that were correlated with the altered glycosylation. In addition to providing a valuable resource, these results provide insights into the potentialroles of glycosylation in the pathogenesis of HGSC, with the possibility of distinguishing pathological outcomes of ovarian tumors from non-tumors, as well as classifying tumor clusters.
