Effect of crystallite size on lithium storage performance of high entropy oxide (Cr 0.2 Mn 0.2 Co 0.2 Ni 0.2 Zn 0.2 ) 3 O 4 nanoparticles

High-entropy oxides (HEOs), known for their high theoretical capacity and structural stability, are considered promising anode materials for next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). In this research, we synthesized a novel spinel-type HEO, (Cr 0.2 Mn 0.2 Co 0.2 Ni 0.2 Zn 0.2 ) 3 O 4 , using a solution combustion method. By adjusting the quantity of the combustion agent, we produced samples with varying crystallite sizes. The crystallite size of the HEOs initially enlarges with an increased combustion agent, then diminishes. The enhancement of crystallite size correlates with improved electrochemical performance for lithium storage. Notably, the (Cr 0.2 Mn 0.2 Co 0.2 Ni 0.2 Zn 0.2 ) 3 O 4 nanoparticles, with the largest crystallite size of 36.3 nm, demonstrated a reversible capacity of 343 mA h g -1 after 100 cycles at 100 mA g -1 , a capacity retention to 319 mA h g -1 after 1000 cycles at 1 A g -1 , and a commendable rate capability of 260 mA h g -1 at 2 A g -1 . Furthermore, this study underscores the pivotal role of crystallite size in LIB performance and presents a viable strategy to enhance the lithium storage capabilities of HEOs and other metal oxides.

A Novel Spinel High-Entropy Oxide (Cr0.2Mn0.2Co0.2Ni0.2Zn0.2)3O4 as Anode Material for Lithium-Ion Batteries

In this study, we synthesized spinel high-entropy oxide (HEO) (Cr0.2Mn0.2Co0.2Ni0.2Zn0.2)3O4 nanoparticles by a simple solution combustion method. These particles were investigated for their performance as anodes in lithium-ion batteries. The reversible capacity is 132 mAh·g−1 after 100 cycles at a current density of 100 mA·g−1, 107 mAh·g−1 after 1000 cycles at a current density of 1 A g−1, and 96 mAh·g−1 rate capacity at a high current density of 2 A g−1. The outstanding cycle stability under high current densities and remarkable rate performance can be attributed to the stable structure originating from the high entropy of the material.

(CrMnCoNiZn) 3 O 4 @PPy core-shell nanocomposite with excellent electrochemical performance as lithium-ion battery anode

High entropy oxides (HEOs) have an excellent potential for use as electrode materials in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their high theoretical specific capacity. In this work, spinel-structured (CrMnCoNiZn) 3 O 4 HEO nanoparticles with five elements in equal molar ratio is first generated by solution combustion method. (CrMnCoNiZn) 3 O 4 @polypyrrole (PPy) nanocomposites are prepared by in-situ polymerization method. As an anode for lithium-ion batteries, the electrochemical performance of the (CrMnCoNiZn) 3 O 4 @PPy composite outperforms that of (CrMnCoNiZn) 3 O 4 nanoparticles. The capacity is 802 mAh/g after 100 cycles at a current density of 100 mA/g, 416 mAh/g after 1000 cycles at a high current density of 1 A/g, and 360 mAh/g rate capacity at 2 A/g. The excellent electrochemical performance of the composites is mainly due to the fact that the conductive and flexible PPy is encapsulated on the high-entropy oxides, which can alleviate the volume change triggered by extraction-insertion of lithium ions process, as well as enhance the electrical conductivity and reduce the occurrence of some side reactions. Finally, this method of compositing materials can also be used in other HEOs and conductive polymers, providing a new idea to enhance the electrochemical properties of HEOs.

Calendar life of lithium metal batteries: Accelerated aging and failure analysis

Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) are prime candidates for next-generation energy storage devices characterized by their remarkable energy storage capabilities. Despite the importance of understating the calendar aging impacts in LMBs, cycle life and calendar life have received inconsistent attention across various research and development stages. For acceptance into an application, especially electric vehicles, batteries are required to have sufficient calendar life to ensure performance over the life of vehicles which often experience extended periods of inactivity. In this study, an in-depth exploration into the calendar aging of LMB (Li/ Li[Ni 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 ]O 2 in pouch cell format) is conducted. Specifically, the impact of calendar aging factors, state-of-charge (SOC), temperature, pressure, and operating conditions (open-circuit voltage, OCV and constant voltage, CV) on the surface morphology and thickness change rate in lithium metal anode is investigated. Notably, the results show that storing LMB pouch cells at an OCV, 80 % SOC, 25 °C, and 10 psi external pressure leads to a <1% reduction in capacity over 18 months. The results also suggest routes which can be utilized in the future for accelerated aging without altering the primary degradation modes. The results also show an accelerated calendar aging at high temperatures (45 °C), 100 % SOC, and CV suggesting they may serve as key accelerated aging methods for future studies. During calendar aging, pressure mitigates dendrite growth and extends calendar life. In conclusion, the insights from this study reinforce the viability of LMBs as a compelling solution for addressing increased energy storage needs in real-world applications.

Topological Crystalline Insulator Candidate ErAsS with Hourglass Fermion and Magnetic-Tuned Topological Phase Transition

Topological crystalline insulators (TCIs) with hourglass fermion surface state have attracted a lot of attention and are further enriched by crystalline symmetries and magnetic order. Here, the emergence of hourglass fermion surface state and exotic phases in the newly discovered, air-stable ErAsS single crystals are shown. In the paramagnetic phase, ErAsS is expected to be a TCI with hourglass fermion surface state protected by the nonsymmorphic symmetry. Dirac-cone-like bands and nearly linear dispersions in large energy range are experimentally observed, consistent well with theoretical calculations. Below T N ≈ 3.27 K, ErAsS enters a collinear antiferromagnetic state, which is a trivial insulator breaking the time-reversal symmetry. An intermediate incommensurate magnetic state appears in a narrow temperature range (3.27–3.65 K), exhibiting an abrupt change in magnetic coupling. Overall, the results reveal that ErAsS is an experimentally available TCI candidate and provide a unique platform to understand the formation of hourglass fermion surface state and explore magnetic-tuned topological phase transitions.
