An Advanced Cooling Device for Concentrated Photovoltaic Systems

Concentrated photovoltaics (CPV) have the potential to significantly enhance the energy conversion utilization of solar panels and reduce solar generation costs, making them a crucial area of advancement in solar power generation technology. However, the concentration of sunlight can lead to overheating of solar panels, resulting in a notable reduction in both the efficiency of solar power generation and the lifespan of the panels. This challenge remains the predominant technical hurdle that hinders the application of concentrated photovoltaic power generation technology. In this study, we propose a new cooling method for concentrated photovoltaic power generation systems via an integrated approach of incorporating Phase-Change Thermal Storage (PCTS) and Thermoelectric Generator (TEG) technology. This new method not only enhances the overall system's electricity generation efficiency but also effectively resolves the technical challenge of concentrated photovoltaic panel overheating issues, ensuring the continuity of concentrated photovoltaic power generation and extending the lifespan of solar panels and their components. In order to make full use of the wasted heat generated by photovoltaic power generation and effectively improve the power generation efficiency of the system, this work developed a phase change heat storage device based on a phase change material. This device uses the temperature difference between day and night to recover wasted heat from photovoltaic power generation. Through integration with the thermoelectric power generation system, thermal energy can be converted into electrical energy. In addition, the Peltier effect of thermoelectric materials is used to construct a photovoltaic panel overheating protection system, which significantly improves the reliability and service life of the system.

Membrane translocation process revealed by in situ structures of type II secretion system secretins

The GspD secretin is the outer membrane channel of the bacterial type II secretion system (T2SS) which secrets diverse toxins that cause severe diseases such as diarrhea and cholera. GspD needs to translocate from the inner to the outer membrane to exert its function, and this process is an essential step for T2SS to assemble. Here, we investigate two types of secretins discovered so far in Escherichia coli , GspD α , and GspD β . By electron cryotomography subtomogram averaging, we determine in situ structures of key intermediate states of GspD α and GspD β in the translocation process, with resolution ranging from 9 Å to 19 Å. In our results, GspD α and GspD β present entirely different membrane interaction patterns and ways of transitioning the peptidoglycan layer. From this, we hypothesize two distinct models for the membrane translocation of GspD α and GspD β , providing a comprehensive perspective on the inner to outer membrane biogenesis of T2SS secretins.

Insights into dual-functional modification for water stability enhancement of mesoporous zirconium metal–organic frameworks

The stability of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) in water affects their ability to function as chemical catalysts, their capacity as adsorbents for separations in water vapor presence, and their usefulness as recyclable water harvesters. Here, we have examined water stability of four node-modified variants of the mesoporous MOF, NU-1000, namely formate-, Acac-, TFacac-, and Facac-NU-1000, comparing these with node-accessible NU-1000. These NU-1000 variants present ligands grafted to NU-1000's hexa-Zr(IV)-oxy nodes by displacing terminal aqua and hydroxo ligands. Facac-NU-1000, containing the most hydrophobic ligands, showed the greatest water stability, being able to undergo at least 20 water adsorption/desorption cycles without loss of water uptake capacity. Computational studies revealed dual salutary functions of installed Facac ligands: (1) enhancement of framework mechanical stability due to electrostatic interactions; and (2) transformation and shielding of the otherwise highly hydrophilic nodes from H-bonding interactions with free water, presumably leading to weaker channel-stressing capillary forces during water evacuation – consistent with trends in free energies of dehydration across the NU-1000 variants. Water harvesting and hydrolysis of chemical warfare agent simulants were examined to gauge the functional consequences of modification and mechanical stabilization of NU-1000 by Facac ligands. The studies revealed a harvesting capacity of ~1.1 L of water vapor per gram of Facac-NU-1000 per sorption cycle. They also revealed retention of catalytic MOF activity following 20 water uptake and release cycles. This study provides insights into the basis for node-ligand-engendered stabilization of wide-channel MOFs against collapse during water removal.

Rapid changes in coastal ocean microbiomes uncoupled with shifts in environmental variables

Disturbances, here defined as events that directly alter microbial community composition, are commonly studied in host–associated and engineered systems. Notably, in spite of global change both altering environmental averages and increasing extreme events, there has been relatively little research into the causes, persistence and population–level impacts of disturbance in the dynamic coastal ocean. Here, we utilize 3 years of observations from a coastal time series to identify disturbances based on the largest week–over–week changes in the microbiome (i.e. identifying disturbance as events that alter the community composition). In general, these microbiome disturbances were not clearly linked to specific environmental factors and responsive taxa largely differed, aside from SAR11, which generally declined. However, several disturbance metagenomes identified increased phage–associated genes, suggesting that unexplained community shifts might be caused by increased mortality. Furthermore, a category 1 hurricane, the only event that would likely be classified a priori as an environmental disturbance, was not an outlier in microbiome composition, but did enhance a bloom in seasonally abundant phytoplankton. Thus, as extreme environmental changes intensify, assumptions of what constitutes a disturbance should be re–examined in the context of ecological history and microbiome responses.

Mismatching integration-enabled strains and defects engineering in LDH microstructure for high-rate and long-life charge storage

Layered double hydroxides (LDH) have been extensively investigated for charge storage, however, their development is hampered by the sluggish reaction dynamics. Herein, triggered by mismatching integration of Mn sites, we configured wrinkled Mn/NiCo-LDH with strains and defects, where promoted mass & charge transport behaviors were realized. The well-tailored Mn/NiCo-LDH displays a capacity up to 518 C g -1 (1 A g -1 ), a remarkable rate performance (78%@100 A g -1 ) and a long cycle life (without capacity decay after 10,000 cycles). We clarified that the moderate electron transfer between the released Mn species and Co 2+ serves as the pre-step, while the compressive strain induces structural deformation with promoted reaction dynamics. Theoretical and operando investigations further demonstrate that the Mn sites boost ion adsorption/transport and electron transfer, and the Mn-induced effect remains active after multiple charge/discharge processes. This contribution provides some insights for controllable structure design and modulation toward high-efficient energy storage.

Operando leaching of pre-incorporated Al and mechanism in transition-metal hybrids on carbon substrates for enhanced charge storage

Insufficient exposure and utilization of active sites often induces an inferior reactivity for transition-metal-based two-dimensional (2D) materials. In response, we for the first time propose a universal "nano-tailoring" strategy to incorporate abundant defects and active sites into low-crystallinity nanosheets by electrochemically leaching of Al species. With MnAl layered double hydroxides (LDHs) as a representative example, potassium-birnessite MnO 2 (AK-MnO 2 ) with oxygen vacancies and abundant edge sites is successfully produced. The oxygen vacancies are shown to help optimize the electron-transfer and ion-adsorption capability. These integrated advantages endow the AK-MnO 2 with a high capacitance value of 239 F g –1 at 100 A g –1 . By further combining with soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy techniques, we unravel that the reducibility of M 2+ in M 2+ Al-LDH serves as the key descriptor for the reconstruction rate. Here, this "nano-tailoring" strategy can provide some important implications and clues to manipulating 2D materials for efficient energy storage and conversion.
