Systems for Transducing Entanglement Between Photons and Electron Spins

The transfer of quantum properties and entanglement between photons and matter (transduction) is a major challenge in QIS, especially with regard to networking quantum information processing. In order to overcome this challenge, it is important to know how non-classical light (single or entangled photons) interacts with matter. This project specifically addresses fundamental questions about the interaction of single and entangled photons with molecules and nanostructures to produce electrons with prescribed spin polarizations and pairs of electrons with entangled spins, thus resulting in transduction by addressing two major objectives: (2) In Objective 1, we will investigate the formation of polarization-encoded radical (spin qubit) pairs and molecular triplet states photoexcited by single quantum emitter light sources. (2) In Objective 2, we will demonstrate the use of two entangled photons, generated by spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) or by the coherent biexcitonic states of perovskite NPLs, to produce two entangled radical (spin qubit) pairs or molecular triplet states.

Manipulating symmetry-breaking charge separation employing molecular recognition

The exploration of symmetry-breaking charge separation (SB-CS) is imperative when designing functional light-harvesting materials. Past explorations, however, have been confined to covalent systems, more often than not requiring complicated/demanding syntheses and facing inconvenient regulation of charge transfer processes. Here, in this work, we present a concept that regulates the efficiency of SB-CS through molecular recognition utilizing a pyridinium-based cyclophane as a host. This host undergoes photo-driven excited-state SB-CS. By employing different guests with distinct frontier molecular orbital energy levels, we have achieved comprehensive control of electron transfer pathways in the cyclophane, modulating between accelerated (>10-fold) intramolecular SB-CS involving superexchange and direct intermolecular electron transfer between the host and guest. The improvement in SB-CS efficiency results in catalytic activity for the photo-oxidation of a sulfur-mustard simulant. This research offers an opportunity for tuning SB-CS by utilizing molecular recognition, which holds the potential for achieving precise regulation without complicated organic syntheses.

Nonlinear optical parameters of 7-prime,7-prime-dicyano-7-prime-apo-beta-carotene in hexane by self-action techniques

Quantitative measurements of the nonlinear refractive index coefficient n(2) and the third-order nonlinear susceptibility chi(3) for a solution of 7-prime,7-prime-dicyano-7-prime-apo-beta-carotene (DCAC) in hexane have been measured at different concentrations. The measurements have been performed by both the self-trapping and self-phase modulation techniques using a CW Ar(+) laser. The results show that DCAC has a relatively large nonlinearity, attributed to a thermal mechanism, with n(2) of the order of 10 exp 9 times that of CS2.
