The 13 November 1984 occultation of BD +08 deg 0471 by (1) Ceres

The 13 November 1984 occultation of BD +08 deg 0471 was discovered during a photographic search carried out with the 0.5 meter Carnegie Double Astrograph at Lick Observatory and the Lowell Observatory PDS microdensitometer. Such a search was stimulated by the curious fact that few favorably located occultations of AGK3 or SAO catalog starts by Ceres will occur during the 1980s. The occultation on 13 November, however, is a particularly good event. The star is 1000 cubic M in V, yielding a predicted drop at occultation of about 10%. Such a drop can be detected by small telescopes equipped with photoelectric photometers, but is too small to be seen visually. The track was predicted to cross the Caribbean, Florida, southern Texas, and Mexico. Based on this prediction, preparations were made to observe the event in Mexico using four portable occultation data systems.

The occultation of AG + 29 deg 398 by 93 Minerva

The occultation of AG + 29 deg 398 by 93 Minerva on 22 November 1982 was successfully observed at 10 sites. The data are best fitted by a circular limb profile having a diameter of 170.8 + or - 1.4 km, a value that agrees well with the published radiometric diameter for this asteroid. However, evidence of significant departure from a spherical shape is found in the occultation observations and in photometric measurements of Minerva made at Lowell Observatory over several months. Additional observations are needed to specify definitively the three-dimensional figure of Minerva.

Occultations of stars and radio sources by comets: Predictions and observing prospects

The results that might stem from observations of occultations of stars and radio sources by cometary comae and ion tails are outlined. Taking account of the current orbital accuracy of P/Halley, specific predictions of stellar appulses with that comet, including preliminary topocentric circumstances, are presented. A crude model of the absorption of starlight by grains in a dusty comet supports the notion that stellar extinction may be observable in practice. Some thoughts on observing techniques are set down, discussing the merits of a two-dimensional detector (a CCD camera) and a conventional aperture photometer. The need for accurate photometric observations with time resolution approx. 1 sec is stressed because the interval of greatest extinction will usually be brief. Finally, the efficacy of undertaking accurate relative astrometry of comets during predicted approaches to stars is explored.

Predictions of occultations of stars and radio sources by Comet Halley

Cataloged cometary ephemerides were compared with cataloged star and radio source positions to generate a comprehensive list of expected occultations by Halley's Comet. The comet path was integrated according of Yeoman's orbit no. 12 and account was taken of gravitational and nongravitational perturbations. A coma of 22,500 km was assumed for star occultation and a 675,000 km radius was projected for radio occultations, the latter to allow for effects of an ion tail. The ephemerides were projected back along the comet track and produced a good fit with observed fixes.

The occultation of AG+29 deg 398 by 98 Minerva

On 22 Nov. 1982, the asteroid 93 Minerva occulted AG-29 deg 398 (= SAO 76O17A), a seventh magnitude star of AO spectral type. The data were best fitted by a circular limb profile having a diameter of 170.8 + or - 1.4 km, a value that agrees well with the published radiometric diameter for this asteroid. However, evidence of significant departure from a spherical shape is found in the occultation observations and in photometric measurements of Minerva. Additional observations are required to specify difinitively the three dimensional figure of Minerva.

Occultations of stars by solar system objects. V - A photographic search for occultations by selected asteroids in 1984

Photographic plates taken with the 0.5-m Carnegie double astrograph have been used to identify upcoming asteroid occultations not found in earlier star catalog searches. Twenty-six occultations involving the minor planets 1 Ceres, 10 Hygiea, 52 Europa, 65 Cybele, 451 Patientia, 511 Davida, and 704 Interamnia were found in this search. Of particular interest is the occultation of BD + 8 deg 471 by 1 Ceres on November 13, 1984, which is predicted to be observable throughout much of Mexico and, perhaps, in the southern United States.

Post-mission Viking data anaysis

Three Mars data analysis projects from the Viking Mars program were identified initially, and three more came into being as the work proceeded. All together, these six pertained to: (1) the veritical distribution of scattering particles in the Martian atmosphere at various locations in various seasons, (2) the physical parameters that define photometric properties of the Martian surface and atmosphere, (3) patterns of dust-cloud and global dust-storm development, (4) a direct comparison of near-simultaneous Viking and ground-based observations, (5) the annual formation and dissipation of polar frost caps, and (6) evidence concerning possible present-day volcanism or venting. A list of publications pertaining to the appropriate projects is included.

The diameter of 375 Ursula from its occultation of AG + 39 deg 303

A value of 216 + or - 10 km for the mean diameter of Ursula is given, based on photometric measurements and observations of the occultation of AG + 39 deg 303, a K-type star of visual magnitude 8.8, by 375 Ursula on November 15, 1982. From the occultation diameter and the absolute visual magnitudes presented, the visual geometric albedo of Ursula is determined to be 0.032, similar to the value typical of C-type asteroids.

Clouds above the Martin Limb: Viking observations

Whenever Viking Orbiter images included the limb of Mars, they recorded one or more layers of clouds above the limb. The height above the limb and the brightness (reflectivity) of these clouds were determined in a selected group of these images. Normalized individual brightness profiles of three separate traverses across the limb of each image are shown. The most notable finding is that some of these clouds can be very high. Many reach heights of over 60 km, and several are over 70 km above the limb. Statistically, the reflectivity of the clouds increases with phase angle. Reflectivity and height both appear to vary with season, but the selected images spanned only one Martian year, so the role of seasons cannot be isolated. Limb clouds in red-filter images tend to be brighter than violet-filter images, but both season and phase appear to be more dominant factors. Due to the limited sample available, the possible influences of latitude and longitude are less clear. The layering of these clouds ranges from a single layer to five or more layers. Reflectivity gradients range from smooth and gentle to steep and irregular.

Predictions of occultations of stars by Comet Crommelin

Predictions of occultation of stars are presented on the basis of star and radio-source catalogs; these are: the AGK3 catalog, the SAO catalog south of the celestial equator, and Perth 70 catalog, as well as the Master List of Radio Sources. The predictions are formulated under the assumption of the coma radius of 22,500 km and a very large cometary radius of 675,000 km for cometary ion tails that may be involved in radio-source occultations. The predictions are expected to change with time.

Occultations of stars by solar system objects. III - A photographic search for occultations of faint stars by selected asteroids

Occultations of stars fainter than the AGK and SAO catalog limits by selected minor planets during their 1983 apparitions have been identified by scanning plates taken with the 13-in. Lowell astrograph. A total of 33 upcoming occultations have been found involving 1 Ceres, 10 Hygiea, 52 Europa, 65 Cybele, 451 Patientia, 511 Davida, and 704 Interamnia.

The diameter of 88 Thisbe from its occultation of SAO 187124

The 7 October, 1981 occultation of SAO 187124 by 88 Thisbe was observed at twelve sites. The occultation observations, together with information about the asteroid's light curve, gives a mean diameter for Thisbe of 232 + or - 10 km. This value is 10 percent larger than the previously published radiometric diameter of Thisbe.

The diameter of Juno from its occultation of AG + 0 deg 1022

The occultation on Dec. 11, 1979, of AG + 0 deg 1022 by Juno was observed photoelectrically from 15 sites distributed across the occultation track. The observations are well represented by a mean elliptical limb profile having semimajor and semiminor axes of 145.2 + or 0.8 and 122.8 + or - 1.9 km, respectively. The corresponding effective diameter of Juno is 267 + or - 5 km, where the uncertainty has been conservatively increased to reflect the presence of limb irregularities clearly seen in the observations. Published radiometric and polarimetric diameters for Juno are 6% to 7% smaller than the occultation result. No secondary occultations attributable to possible satellites of Juno were recorded at any of 23 photoelectrically equipped observing sites.

The diameter of Pallas from its occultation of SAO 85009

The May 29, 1978, occultation of SAO 85009 by Pallas was observed photoelectrically at seven widely spaced sites. The observations are well represented by an elliptical apparent limb profile having semimajor and semiminor axes of 279.5 + or - 2.9 and 262.7 + or - 4.5 km, respectively. Combining these results with published information on the light curve and rotational pole position, Pallas's mean diameter is found to be 538 + or - 12 km, which yields a mean density for Pallas of 2.8 + or - 0.5 g/cu cm and a visual geometric albedo of 0.103 + or - 0.005. The diameter of Pallas as determined from this occultation is significantly smaller than the values derived by radiometric, polarimetric, and double-image techniques.
