Age of graben systems on the moon

The study focuses on the time of formation of the graben. An attempt is made to determine whether the graben are restricted to geologic units of certain ages, and whether and at what time graben formation ceased. It is shown that (1) most preserved graben formed considerably later than the impacts that formed the basins; (2) graben are faults that are reactivated along older basin concentric and radial structures and lunar grid directions; (3) graben formation ceased about 3.6 + or - 0.2 b.y. ago; and (4) graben formation reflects a tensile stress fields that obtained during part of early lunar history. Other features of graben systems on the moon are also identified.

Regional deformation of mare surfaces

The possible tectonic significance of large topographic irregularities within Mare Serenitatis is discussed, and the characteristics of sinuous rilles are considered as possible indicators of structural deformation. It is shown that most sinuous rilles have been structurally warped and that their slopes lie within the laminar flow range. The sinuous rilles may have been formed in the domain of turbulent flow, if the ratios of meander wavelength to channel width can be taken as indicators. Some surface tectonic deformation occurring before the broad uplift of the basin center is suggested by the surface topography and radar reflectors in the Mare Serenitatis.

Effect of forward motion on engine noise

Methods used to determine a procedure for correcting static engine data for the effects of forward motion are described. Data were analyzed from airplane flyover and static-engine tests with a JT8D-109 low-bypass-ratio turbofan engine installed on a DC-9-30, with a CF6-6D high-bypass-ratio turbofan engine installed on a DC-10-10, and with a JT9D-59A high-bypass-ratio turbofan engine installed on a DC-10-40. The observed differences between the static and the flyover data bases are discussed in terms of noise generation, convective amplification, atmospheric propagation, and engine installation. The results indicate that each noise source must be adjusted separately for forward-motion and installation effects and then projected to flight conditions as a function of source-path angle, directivity angle, and acoustic range relative to the microphones on the ground.

Lunar farside tectonics and volcanism

The reported study is primarily concerned with the identification and mapping of structural and volcanic features on the lunar farside. The study represents a continuation and extension of a similar investigation made of the nearside of the moon by Scott et al. (1975). Mapping reveals that tectonic structures on the moon's farside are comparatively scarce and such less prominently developed than those on the nearside. Rilles and mare-type ridges that form major linear and basin concentric systems on the nearside are nearly absent on the farside as are large normal faults like Rupes Recta and Rupes Cauchy. The azimuth orientations of five types of geologic structures were measured, including lineaments, crater chains, terra ridges, faults and linear rilles, and straight segments of crater rims. Mare basalts are concentrated in low regions, especially in a large southern basin which is also the site of relatively numerous volcanic constructs as well as geochemical and magnetic anomalies.
