Growth and electrical properties of ultrafine fibers

This paper reports on free-standing ultrafine fibers formed using the gas-evaporation method in the presence of electric fields. Materials up to 10 cm in length have been prepared in this way. Electrical measurements on Pd fibers 3 mm in length and about 200-300 A in diameter are given.

Weakly multi-dimensional cosmic-ray-modified MHD shocks

The multi-dimensional structure of weak, energetic-particle-modified shocks is investigated by means of appropriate perturbation techniques. The time-dependent shock-structure equation is found to be a generalized form of the well-known one-dimensional Burgers equation, whose steady state, in the absence of cosmic rays, is shown to be related to an equation modeling steady transonic flow in several dimensions. The time-dependent (1 + 2)- and (1 + 3)-dimensional Burgers equations are integrated exactly by means of Hirota's technique for one-shock solutions. On the basis of the exact solutions, a discussion relating the various length scales associated with the shock is presented.

Critical currents in A-15 structure Nb3Al converted from cold-worked bcc structure

The paper considers critical currents in A-15 structure Nb3Al converted from a cold-worked bcc structure. Nb3Al prepared in the ductile phase by quenching and mechanical working followed by conversion to the A-15 structure could carry currents above 10 to the 9th power A/sq m in fields near 20 T. These critical currents are comparable to those of Nb3Ge and V3Ga which are closest competing materials for use in high fields; further enhancement of the critical current is possible if thermal treatments are optimized.

Chemical vapor deposition of high T sub c superconductors

The results are reported of an investigation into the synthesis and properties of high temperature superconducting materials. A chemical vapor deposition apparatus was designed and built which is suitable for the preparation of multicomponent metal films This apparatus was used to prepare a series of high T sub c A-15 structure superconducting films in the binary system Nb-Ge. The effect on T sub c of a variety of substrate materials was investigated. An extensive series of ternary alloys were also prepared. Conditions allowing the brittle high T sub c (approximately 18 K) A-15 structure superconductor Nb3A1 to be prepared in a low T sub c but ductile form were found. Some of the ways that the ductile (bcc) form can be cold worked or machined are described. Measurements of rate of transformation of cold worked bcc material to the high T sub c A-15 structure with low temperature annealing are given. Preliminary measurements indicate that this material has attractive high field critical current densities.

Properties of superconducting Nb3Ga materials.

The superconducting-to-normal phase boundary was studied experimentally in several Nb-Ga materials as a function of applied field and superconducting transition temperature. When properly fabricated, the stoichiometric material Nb3Ga yields a superconducting transition temperature of 20.3 K, the highest yet reported for a binary alloy. Preliminary work shows that Nb-Ga materials with a superconducting transition temperature of 19 K can be made by chemical vapor deposition, a process commonly used for producing commercial superconducting tape.
