A fuzzy case based reasoning tool for model based approach to rocket engine health monitoring

In this system we develop a fuzzy case based reasoner that can build a case representation for several past anomalies detected, and we develop case retrieval methods that can be used to index a relevant case when a new problem (case) is presented using fuzzy sets. The choice of fuzzy sets is justified by the uncertain data. The new problem can be solved using knowledge of the model along with the old cases. This system can then be used to generalize the knowledge from previous cases and use this generalization to refine the existing model definition. This in turn can help to detect failures using the model based algorithms.

Image feature extraction using Gabor-like transform

Noisy and highly textured images were operated on with a Gabor-like transform. The results were evaluated to see if useful features could be extracted using spatio-temporal operators. The use of spatio-temporal operators allows for extraction of features containing simultaneous frequency and orientation information. This method allows important features, both specific and generic, to be extracted from images. The transformation was applied to industrial inspection imagery, in particular, a NASA space shuttle main engine (SSME) system for offline health monitoring. Preliminary results are given and discussed. Edge features were extracted from one of the test images. Because of the highly textured surface (even after scan line smoothing and median filtering), the Laplacian edge operator yields many spurious edges.

KIPSE1: A Knowledge-based Interactive Problem Solving Environment for data estimation and pattern classification

A knowledge-based interactive problem solving environment called KIPSE1 is presented. The KIPSE1 is a system built on a commercial expert system shell, the KEE system. This environment gives user capability to carry out exploratory data analysis and pattern classification tasks. A good solution often consists of a sequence of steps with a set of methods used at each step. In KIPSE1, solution is represented in the form of a decision tree and each node of the solution tree represents a partial solution to the problem. Many methodologies are provided at each node to the user such that the user can interactively select the method and data sets to test and subsequently examine the results. Otherwise, users are allowed to make decisions at various stages of problem solving to subdivide the problem into smaller subproblems such that a large problem can be handled and a better solution can be found.

An approach to combining heuristic and qualitative reasoning in an expert system

An approach to combining the heuristic reasoning from shallow knowledge and the qualitative reasoning from deep knowledge is described. The shallow knowledge is represented in production rules and under the direct control of the inference engine. The deep knowledge is represented in frames, which may be put in a relational DataBase Management System. This approach takes advantage of both reasoning schemes and results in improved efficiency as well as expanded problem solving ability.
