Improved Assembly for Gas Shielding During Welding or Brazing

An improved assembly for inert-gas shielding of a metallic joint is designed to be useable during any of a variety of both laser-based and traditional welding and brazing processes. The basic purpose of this assembly or of a typical prior related assembly is to channel the flow of a chemically inert gas to a joint to prevent environmental contamination of the joint during the welding or brazing process and, if required, to accelerate cooling upon completion of the process.

MPTA Overview

Presentation discusses Micro Plasma Transfer Arc (MPTA) welding. It was introduced in 1960, and has been used for blade refurbishment for jet engines since 1980. It is compared with Gas Tungsten Arc Welding. MPTA welding reduces the heat input to perform the weld. It uses controlled filler material, and it is easy to use.

High-temperature containerless aircraft furnace experimentation in the microgravity environment aboard a KC-135 aircraft

This paper describes a materials processing research furnace, the High-Temperature Containerless Aircraft Furnace (HITCAF), which uses an electric arc to melt and resolidify materials in the microgravity environment aboard a KC-135 aircraft. The HITCAF is designed to process almost every electrically conductive material, including such high-melting-point materials as tungsten, within a 15 to 20 sec microgravity period. It operates on tungsten/inert gas welding principles, using an adapted commercially available tube welder. The HITCAF is fully operational and available for use by researchers representing the Government agencies, as well as industry and academia.
