Deep Space 1 Mission and observation of Comet Borrelly

After DS1 1 completed its successful primary mission in 1999, NASA sent it on a risky and ambitious extended mission to conduct comet science. In September 2001, DSl executed a flawless encounter with comet Borrelly, yielding the best pictures and other scientific data ever collected at a comet, providing scientists with a tremendous advance in our understanding of these intriguing and important parts of the solar system.

Compact CH4 sensor based on difference frequency mixing of diode lasers in quasi-phasematched LiNbO3

A compact, portable and robust room temperature CH4 sensor is reported. By difference frequency mixing a 500 mW alpha-DFB diode laser at 1066 nm and an erbium-doped fiber amplified 1574 nm DFB diode laser in periodically poled lithium niobate up to 7 (mu)W of narrowband radiation at 3.3 microns is generated. Real-time monitoring of CH4 over a 7 day period using direct absorption in an open-path multipass cell (L = 36 m) demonstrates a detection precision of +/- 14 ppb.

Using Virtual Reality for Science Mission Planning: A Mars Pathfinder Case

The Mars Pathfinder Project GDS Team has designed software that integrates virtual reality technology with existing JPL Navigational Ancillary Information Facilities (NAIF) and image processing capabilities. The result is an interactive, workstation-based application software that provides a high resolution 3-dimensional stereo display of Mars as if it were viewed through the lander camera. This paper describes the architecture and characteristics of this science mission planning software and discusses possible uses of this software by other planetary missions.
