Mid Infrared Instrument Cooler Subsystem Test Facility Overview

The Cryocooler for the Mid Infrared Instrument (MIRI) on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) provides cooling at 6.2K on the instrument interface. The cooler system design has been incrementally documented in previous publications [1][2][3][4][5]. It has components that traverse three primary thermal regions on JWST: Region 1, approximated by 40K; Region 2, approximated by 100K; and Region 3, which is at the allowable flight temperatures for the spacecraft bus. However, there are several sub-regions that exist in the transition between primary regions and at the heat reject interfaces of the Cooler Compressor Assembly (CCA) and Cooler Control Electronics Assembly (CCEA). The design and performance of the test facility to provide a flight representative thermal environment for acceptance testing and characterization of the complete MIRI cooler subsystem are presented.

Recent Results of the Guide-2 Telescope Testbed for the SIM-Lite Mission

The Space Interferometry Mission Planet QuestLite (SIM-Lite) is a new mission concept to perform microarcsecond narrow-angle astrometry to search approximately 50 nearby stars for Earth-like planets, and also to perform a global astrometry. The SIM-Lite consists of two Michelson interferometers and one telescope. The main six-meter baseline science interferometer observes a target star and a set of reference stars. The four-meter baseline interferometer (Guide-1) monitors the attitude of the instrument in the direction of a target star. A new Guide-2telescope (G2T) tracks a bright star to monitor the attitude of the instrument in the other two orthogonal directions. In the current mission concept, the G2T consists of a 30 cm siderostat and a 30 cm confocal telescope, similar to other four telescopes used in the science and Guide-1interferometers. A testbed has been built to demonstrate the G2T feasibility for SIM-Lite mission. Recent results show that field-independent, star-tracking capability of the system is less than 30 (mu)as after the SIM narrow angle analysis.

MISTE flight experiment status

The MISTE flight experiment has made significant scientific and technical progress in preparing for a future microgravity flight. We are collaborating with several theoretical modeling groups that have developed crossover (equation-of-state) models for predicting thermodynamic behavior near the liquid-gas critical point. Several of these models have already been used to test experimental measurements of the heat capacity at constant volume, isothermal susceptibility, and coexistence curve in the crossover region near the 3He liquid-gas critical point. A brief description of these models and a representative fit to experimental data will be presented. In collaboration with Mission Research Corporation, MISTE has been testing a new small pneumatic valve for use at low temperatures. The results of recent successful low temperature actuation tests will also be discussed.
